Occupational allergic contact dermatitis from systemic drugs.

BACKGROUND: Health-care workers (HCWs) and professionals working in the pharmaceutical industry are at risk of developing occupational allergic contact dermatitis (OACD) from systemic drugs (or drug intermediates). OBJECTIVES: To study demographic characteristics and identify systemic drugs responsible for OACD in patients investigated for contact allergy during the period 2001-2019. METHODS: In the study period, 9780 patients were patch tested with the European baseline series, sometimes with additional series, and other relevant potential allergens. All patients with a positive patch-test

Occupational Airborne Contact Dermatitis Caused by Omeprazole.

Airborne contact dermatitis (ACD) is a frequent condition, and there has been increasing recognition of the occupational origin of airborne contact dermatitis. ACD caused by drugs is often occupation-related and occurs mainly in healthcare workers who use the drugs for therapeutic aims and employees of pharmaceutical industries involved in the production of the drugs (1). Omeprazole (OM) is a proton pump inhibitor from the benzimidazole group used for treatment of gastric acid-related disorders (2). A 52-years-old female chemist had been working in a pharmaceutical company for 20 years. When w

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis caused by colophonium.

BACKGROUND: Colophonium is a common contact allergen that is present not only in household products but also in occupational settings. OBJECTIVES: To describe the sources of occupational exposure to colophonium and the occupations at risk of colophonium allergy. METHODS: We reviewed patch test files from the years 2002 to 2017 at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health for patients with allergic reactions to colophonium and abietic acid. We analysed the patch test, occupation and exposure data of 39 patients diagnosed with occupational allergic contact dermatitis (OACD) caused by coloph

Cement-Induced Chromate Occupational Allergic Contact Dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Hexavalent chromium in cement is a common cause of occupational allergic contact dermatitis (OACD). METHODS: Analysis of patch test data during 1999 to 2013 was done. Patients with cement-induced chromate OACD filled the Dermatology Life Quality Index, graded 1 to 5. RESULTS: Of 4846 consecutive patients who were patch tested, 146 (3%) were chromate-sensitive. Of 46 (31.5%) who presented with chromate OACD, 27 (59%) had cement-induced chromate OACD. The proportion of chromate-sensitive patients with clinically relevant cement exposure increased from 7.7% in 2002 to 2004 to 28.7%

Occupational contact dermatitis caused by D-limonene.

BACKGROUND: Limonene is widely used as a fragrance substance and solvent in cleansing products. Oxidized limonene is a frequent contact allergen among consumers of cosmetics, personal care products, and scented household cleaning products. Less is known about the sources of occupational exposure and occupational contact dermatitis caused by limonene. OBJECTIVE: To report 14 patients with occupational contact allergy to limonene. METHODS: The patients were examined in 2008-2013. An in-house preparation of oxidized limonene was patch tested as 3% and 5% in petrolatum from 2008 to August 2010,

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis from methyl aminolevulinate.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is used to treat certain types of nonmelanoma skin cancer. Metvix cream applied topically in PDT is composed of the active substance methyl aminolevulinate and 14 excipients composing the vehicle. One case of occupational allergic contact dermatitis from methyl aminolevulinate is reported. A 49-year-old nurse's aide working in a PDT unit in the dermatology department developed a dermatitis involving the eyelids and fingers. The lesions began a few months after she started working in that unit. Patch tests were performed with the standard series (Spanish Group for Res

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis due to thioureas.

Thioureas are used as additives in rubber products and as antidegradants for natural rubber latex. They are an uncommon cause of allergic contact dermatitis. This case represents an example of occupational allergic contact dermatitis solely from thioureas in rubber products and no cross-reactivity with other rubber allergens. Standard patch tests may fail to detect thiourea-induced allergic contact dermatitis, so clinicians should consider thiourea sensitization in rubber allergy.

Occupational contact urticaria and protein contact dermatitis.

Irritant dermatitis and eczema are the most prevalent occupational skin diseases. Less common are immediate contact reactions such as contact urticaria and protein contact dermatitis. Occupational contact urticaria can be subdivided into two categories, immunological and non immunological. However, some agents can induce these two types of reactions. Contact urticaria to natural rubber latex is particularly frequent among health care personnel, but contact urticaria to a wide variety of other substances occurs in many other occupations. Among those at risk are cooks, bakers, butchers, restaura

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis from alkylammonium amidobenzoate.

Quaternary ammonium compounds are water-soluble antimicrobials which are widely used in disinfectants, sterilizers, skin cleansers and antiseptic creams. One quaternary ammonium compound, alkylammonium amidobenzoate (Osmaron B) has for decades been used in udder ointments. Here we present a ship technician with occupationally induced sensitization to alkylammonium amidobenzoate. The diagnosis was reached only when it emerged, after careful questioning, that the patient was exposed to a substance peculiar to his workplace but not to his occupation and was then patch tested for it. It turned out

Occupational contact dermatitis among New Zealand farmers.

Forty-six farmers were patch tested to determine whether their dermatitis was secondary to an occupational allergen. Twenty-eight had a positive patch test of which 23 were thought relevant (definite or probable). In 20 of these cases, the allergen(s) was considered to be work related (define or probable). The common allergens were pesticides (N-(1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethylthio) -4-cyclohexene-1,2-dicarboximide (captafol), ethylenebis (dithiocarbamato) manganese (maneb) and copper sulfate), rubber compounds (N-isopropyl-N-phenyl-4-phenylenediamine (IPPD) and 4-phenylene diamine base) and sunscree

Occupational contact dermatitis due to nickel allergy.

Contact allergy to nickel is a large dermatological problem affecting 10-15% of women and 1% of men in the general population. The aim of this study was to illustrate the significance of occupational nickel exposure in men. Patch testing was carried out to identify patients with nickel allergy and the dimethylglyoxime test was used to identify sources of nickel exposure. 8% of the men and 30% of the women were patch-test positive to nickel. Most of the patients had hand eczema, and a few had facial eczema. Tools and equipment used in different jobs by workers such as carpenters, electricians,

Occupational contact dermatitis in New South Wales.

Five hundred and seventy patients with occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) were seen between 1984 and 1990 at the Skin and Cancer Foundation in Sydney. Data derived from these patients demonstrated that hairdressing, food, construction and the medical industries were the most at risk of OCD. The hairdressing and food industries had a high percentage of apprentices suffering OCD whilst the 35 to 44 year age bracket was most at risk in the construction industry. Allergic contact dermatitis was responsible for 38.2% of cases. The main allergens were chromate, thiuram, epoxy resin, nickel and co

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis caused by nitroglycerin.

Irritant contact dermatitis caused by occupational contact with nitroglycerin has been known since the end of the last century. Nitroglycerin is an allergen, and the transdermal drug delivery systems for nitroglycerin recently used to treat angina pectoris have sensitized. 4 patients with allergic contact dermatitis caused by nitroglycerin from explosives are described, and 1 patient who was sensitized by transdermal nitroplaster. On patch testing, dynamite and/or the explosive components nitroglycerin, ethylene glycol dinitrate and dinitrotoluene gave allergic reactions. The following concent
