PURPOSE: To asses the role of imaging in acute pyelonephritis by retrospectively evaluating a number of cases observed with special care to US and CT signs that may be useful for an early and correct diagnostic assessment.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: From 1994 to the first quarter of 2000 we observed 95 patients clinically suspected of having acute pyelonephritis (81 females and 14 males, age range 2-80 years; 75% were under 40 years old). Sonography was performed as an emergency in 78 patients. CT scan with contrast media was performed in acute phase in 78 patients acquiring the images in the pre-

An acute abdomen may result from various diseases, with appendicitis, cholecystitis, pancreatitis, and obstruction of the small and the large bowel as the leading causes. The quality of diagnostic imaging has been improved within the last years especially by recent developments of cross-sectional imaging modalities. Sonography is an efficient modality for detecting cholecystitis and appendicitis. Spiral computed tomography is the modality of choice in case of suspected bowel obstruction or pancreatitis.

Thyroiditis belongs to a heterogeneous group of inflammatory thyroid diseases. Hashimoto's thyroiditis, has an autoimmune pathogenesis: patients can be euthyroid or develop hypothyroidism, but may also experience transient thyrotoxicosis. Silent and postpartum thyroiditis also recognize an autoimmune origin; their clinical course being characterized by transient thyrotoxicosis occurring either sporadically or post-partum. Subacute thyroiditis is a painful, inflammatory disease of viral origin. Acute thyroiditis is a rare, serious, bacterial inflammatory disease. Riedel's thyroiditis is a rare

The mystique of bone dysplasias is gradually vanishing. A short historical overview introduces the subject of short stature. The pathogenesis and controversial classification of skeletal dysplasias are discussed and summarized in two tables; the use of different imaging modalities is laid out along the sequential diagnostic approach and review of common orthopedic complications. References to such advances in treatment as bone marrow transplantation, bone lengthening, and the encouraging positive effect of growth hormone therapy complete this updated revision.

Neurenteric cysts are rare, with fewer than 30 cases noted in the literature. We report the case of a newborn infant with respiratory distress caused by a large neurenteric cyst that was identified by prenatal ultrasound. Treatment consisted of excision of the mass through a right posterolateral thoracotomy. The cyst adhered to the spine at the level of the first thoracic vertebra and communicated with the jejunum through a posterior diaphragmatic defect. Postoperative studies with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) disclosed an anterior meningocele and tethering of

This retrospective study was conducted to assess the value of imaging in patients with refractory puerperal febrile morbidity. During a 36-month period, 31 patients were referred for ultrasound and/or computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging because of postpartum fever unresponsive to broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy of at least 72 hours' duration. Hematomas were identified in 11 women. Abscesses were diagnosed in seven patients, ovarian venous thrombosis in two, vesicouterine fistula in one, small-bowel obstruction in one, and a subcutaneous seroma in one. Twenty-one women had endom

This report discusses hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (HPS) and the current approach to diagnostic imaging in the vomiting infant. Signs and symptoms include dehydration and vigorous gastric peristalsis with vomitus. Palpation of an olive-shaped firm muscular tumor is pathognomonic of this condition. The radiographic signs of HPS are well known. Previously published criteria for the sonographic diagnosis of HPS are discussed, these include: measurements of pyloric length, diameter and muscle thickness. The thickened muscle is the most discriminated and accurate one. It was concluded that real-ti…

The radiologic evaluation of upper extremity trauma relies primarily on standard as well as optional radiographic projections. Certain injuries are more fully evaluated with fluoroscopy, arthrography, ultrasound, computed tomography, or magnetic resonance imaging. The imaging approach to upper extremity trauma is presented, with emphasis on subtle or commonly overlooked lesions. The indications for evaluation by fluoroscopy, arthrography, and advanced imaging modalities are discussed.

Infundibulopelvic stenosis is a very rare kidney disease. This congenital disorder must be differentiated from multicystic dysplastic kidney, polycystic kidney disease, simple renal cysts and mega-(poly)-calicosis. Associated abnormalities of the ureter are rare. Ureteric obstruction was associated in our two patients, and in one case agenesis of the bladder and a duplicated genital tract were also present.

Mastocytosis is a rare clonal disorder marked by the excessive proliferation and accumulation of mast cells in different tissues, with the skin and bone marrow being the most commonly affected sites. Mastocytosis is primarily driven by somatic mutations that most commonly affect the c-KIT proto-oncogene. The World Health Organization classifies mastocytosis into three main categories. Cutaneous mastocytosis involves infiltration limited to the skin and is more prevalent in children than in adults. Systemic mastocytosis involves infiltration of extracutaneous organs, including the liver, spleen

Cross-sectional imaging procedures play a pivotal role in the assessment of the jejunum and ileum as these segments of the small intestine are less easily accessible to endoscopic evaluation compared to the stomach, duodenum and colon. The radiological diagnostics of the small bowel are, however, a special challenge as many small bowel diseases show similar imaging patterns making a differentiation difficult. Technical advances in imaging now enable a more precise characterization of the bowel wall, thereby providing the basis for increasingly more personalized medicine. An imaging pattern-bas

BACKGROUND: Infectious spondylitis is a rare but increasingly recognized condition involving infectious lesions of the spine. It can affect patients of all ages and is typically caused by bacterial, fungal, or other pathogens. The infection commonly targets the vertebral bodies and intervertebral discs. Early symptoms of infectious spondylitis are often nonspecific, making it challenging to differentiate from other spinal disorders such as tumors, degenerative diseases, or other types of infections. As the condition can progress rapidly, early diagnosis and intervention are crucial to improvin

Leukodystrophies, a group of rare demyelinating disorders, mainly affect the CNS. Clinical presentation of different types of leukodystrophies can be nonspecific, and thus, imaging techniques like MRI can be used for a more definitive diagnosis. These diseases are characterized as cerebral lesions with characteristic demyelinating patterns which can be used as differentiating tools. In this review, we talk about these MRI study findings for each leukodystrophy, associated genetics, blood work that can help in differentiation, emerging diagnostics, and a follow-up imaging strategy. The leukodys

Plain, weight-bearing radiography is the preferred first-line imaging. Dependent on the suspected pathology, further imaging is indicated. In a soft tissue infection, an abscess has to be excluded, for example, with ultrasound. Osteomyelitis has a typical triad including osteolysis, periosteal reaction, and bone destruction in radiography, but signs are often delayed. MRI is the gold standard for diagnosis of osteomyelitis with high intensity in T2-weighted and STIR images and intermediate to decreased reticulated hazy intensity in T1-weighted images. In comparison, bone marrow edema is also b

This is a review of diagnostic imaging findings in coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19). CT findings are frequently bilateral, multilobar and peripheral ground-glass opacities with vascular enlargements. Consolidations often appear during progression as well as crazy paving and reticulation. Lymphadenopathy, pleural effusions and pneumothorax are rare and should raise concern for other disease. Initially the CT can be normal, and the diagnostic performance for COVID-19 is not optimal. However, findings of characteristic ground-glass opacities during the ongoing epidemic should lead to considera…

A 92-year-old woman presented to the emergency department with urinary symptoms, fever and suprapubic tenderness. Her inflammatory markers were raised. Urine and blood cultures were negative. Computed tomography performed to look for a source of sepsis showed distension of the uterine cavity with high-attenuation fluid, an air-fluid level and gas locules along the uterine wall. The causes, clinical presentation and imaging features of pyometra are discussed.
