[The histamine-free diet].

Food intolerance is not IgE-mediated but caused by histamine. A diminished histamine degradation based on a deficiency of diaminoxidase is suspected to be the reason. The therapeutic efficacy of a histamine-free diet was evaluated in 100 patients with food intolerance and allergic diseases, who were required to avoid fish, cheese, hardcured sausage, pickled cabbage, wine and beer for 4 weeks. Considerable improvement was observed in 57 patients, 15 of whom had total remission. The most striking treatment results were obtained in food or wine intolerance (80% P < 0.05; treatment of choice), bro…

Diet, nutrition, and cancer.

Evidence pertaining to the role of dietary factors in carcinogenesis comes from both epidemiological studies and laboratory experiments. In 1982, the Committee on Diet, Nutrition, and Cancer of the National Research Council conducted a comprehensive evaluation of this evidence. That assessment as well as recent epidemiological and laboratory investigations suggest that a high fat diet is associated with increased susceptibility to cancer of different sites, particularly the breast and colon, and to a lesser extent, the prostate. Current data permit no definitive conclusions about other dietary…

Phenylketonuria, adolescence, and diet.

The decision to continue treatment for phenylketonuria (PKU) patients into adolescence and adulthood presents a challenge to nutritionists and other professionals who must motivate patients to maintain the diet and give them support. Nutrition needs must be assessed and then met by commercial low-phenylalanine formula and low-protein foods, while at the same time the amount of phenylalanine in the diet is severely limited. Combinations of products can be used to tailor the diet to individual needs, e.g., weight reduction. The objective is to allow the intellectually normal PKU patient to devel…

An Australian exclusion diet.

Exclusion diets may have a practical place in determining the precipitating dietary factors in certain clinical conditions. We present an exclusion diet which is based on the exclusion of food commonly known to cause food allergies, and the exclusion of food which contains salicylates, benzoates, tartrazine, yeast, and penicillin. This provided a basis for challenge with these additives and natural chemicals. Preliminary information in urticaria suggests a use for this diet in some allergic conditions.

[Diet imbalances and aflatoxicosis].

Generally we know influences of diet's balances or imbalances upon toxicants. Some actions appear with aflatoxins as shown by studies on rat, pig, calf, poultry, turkey and duckling. According to species considered, oral administration of aflatoxins reduces food consummation, Nitrogen balance, respiratory coefficient. Therefore those modifications may be induced by a decrease of foodstuffs ingestion. It has been underlined that hypoproteic diet increases intoxication and diet rich in lipotropic factors decreases it. The greatest number of experiments carried out are concerning vitamins A and D…

Diet, nutrition, and cancer.

As the second leading cause of death in the United States, cancer is a major public health problem today. Cancer incidence varies worldwide and tends to change with migration. These epidemiological observations have led to the concept that environmental factors may be important in carcinogenesis. Diet and nutrition are receiving increased attention and the National Cancer Institute, as mandated by the Nation Cancer Act Amendments of 1974, is playing a major leadership role in expanding research efforts in the areas of environmental carcinogenesis, and nutrition in relation to cancer. The subje…

Linking diet and planetary health: psychometric evaluation of the climatarian diet adherence scale.

BACKGROUND: While the effects of different types of diets on health and their role in weight loss have been researched for many years, their impact on planetary health has been a subject of study for a much shorter time. The amount of clean water polluted, the amount of greenhouse gases generated, and the land required for the production of the food we consume are now also becoming increasingly important. This study aimed to develop a scale to assess adherence to the climatarian diet, a dietary pattern designed to minimize environmental impacts. METHODS: A 25-item draft that was developed by …

Feasibility of the AusMed Diet Program: Translating the Mediterranean Diet for Older Australians.

The Mediterranean diet pattern (MEDI) is associated with a lower risk of chronic conditions related to ageing. Adherence research mostly comes from Mediterranean countries with high cultural acceptability. This study examines the feasibility of a MEDI intervention designed specifically for older Australians (AusMed). Phase 1 involved a consumer research group (n = 17) presentation of program materials with surveys after each section. In-depth individual semi-structured interviews (n = 6) were then conducted. All participants reported increased knowledge and confidence in adherence to the MEDI,…

Bruising and the ketogenic diet: evidence for diet-induced changes in platelet function.

Excessive bruising is a symptom noted by parents of some children treated with the ketogenic diet for epilepsy control, although this side effect is not reported in the literature. We evaluated our cohort of current and past diet-treated patients for symptoms of bruising or bleeding through chart review and prospective screening at clinic follow-up visits. A significant increase in bruising or other minor bleeding was reported and/or observed in 16 of 51 patients (31.4%). There were no differences in sex distribution or number of anticonvulsants used between patients with bruising/bleeding and…

Diet Change Improves Obesity and Lipid Deposition in High-Fat Diet-Induced Mice.

The number of obese people is increasing dramatically worldwide, and one of the major causes of obesity is excess energy due to high-fat diets. Several studies have shown that reducing food and energy intake represents a key intervention or treatment to combat overweight/obesity. Here, we conducted a 12-week energy-restricted dietary intervention for high-fat diet-induced obese mice (C57BL/6J) to investigate the effectiveness of diet change in improving obesity. The results revealed that the diet change from HFD to NFD significantly reduced weight gain and subcutaneous adipose tissue weight in…

Update of US FDA's Total Diet Study food list and diets.

The US Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Total Diet Study (TDS) has been conducted continuously since the early 1960s to measures levels of various pesticide residues, contaminants, and nutrients in foods and to estimate the dietary exposures to these compounds. Both the TDS food list and the consumption amounts used for estimating exposures are based on results of nationwide food consumption surveys, and they are updated periodically to reflect changes in food consumption patterns. The most recent update was completed in 2003 using the same methodology employed in the previous update (1990…

Diet and breast cancer: evidence that extremes in diet are associated with poor survival.

PURPOSE: Diet has been postulated to influence breast cancer prognosis; however, existing evidence is weak and inconsistent. Previous studies have sought evidence of a linear relationship between diet and breast cancer outcomes. Because of a U-shaped association of body mass index (BMI) with survival in breast cancer, we hypothesized that a nonlinear association also existed for dietary variables. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Four hundred seventy-seven women with surgically resected T1 to T3, N0/1, M0 breast cancer completed the Block Food Frequency Questionnaire 9.3 +/- 4.6 weeks (mean +/- standard…

Serum cholesterol response to changes in the diet: II. The effect of cholesterol in the diet.

The series of metabolic ward experiments, with 22 physically healthy men in each, covered dietary cholesterol intakes from 50 to 1450 mg. daily, with all other variables controlled. The serum-cholesterol data, plus the data from comparable experiments reported from 4 other institutions, were analyzed in regard to average serum cholesterol response (Δ Chol., mg./100 ml.) to changed cholesterol intake. Least-squares solution, using serum cholesterol responses in 19 sets of dietary cholesterol comparisons, gives Δ Chol. = 1.5(Z2 − Z1), where the subscripts refer to the diets compared and Z is the…

Diet and skin: a primer.

There are strong data on the relationship between dietary patterns and skin conditions. This article provides an introduction for dermatologists on the role of diet in 3 common skin conditions: acne vulgaris, psoriasis, and atopic dermatitis (AD). High glycemic index foods are associated with acne vulgaris. Psoriasis is associated with obesity and weight loss, and improved dietary patterns may improve cutaneous disease. Children with AD are at higher risk for food allergies, and a small subset may experience flares in relationship to non-IgE-mediated food allergies, though there is a need for …
