Behaviorally informed digital campaigns and their association with social media engagement and COVID-19 vaccine uptake in Belize.

BACKGROUND: Increasing vaccination coverage was key to curbing the COVID-19 pandemic globally. However, lack of trust in the vaccine and fear of side effects in regions like the Caribbean resulted in a low uptake despite enough vaccine supply. METHODS: We conducted two correlational analyses and one experiment between five sequential behaviorally informed Facebook campaigns, social media performance outcomes, and district-level vaccination data. First, we ran multivariate linear regression models to estimate the mean differences between the campaigns in (i) social media performance ("Clicks"

Pathways to Depressive Symptoms in a Digital Environment: The Role of Trait Affectivity and Mediation of Media Response Styles in Adolescence.

Trait negative affectivity and trait extraversion/positive affectivity are predictive of both responses to affect and depressive symptoms in adolescence. Furthermore, differences in the use of responses to affect are associated with different levels of depressive symptoms. Despite the central role of media content in adolescents' daily lives, responses to affect have not yet been extended to affect in this media content. It is thus unclear whether trait affectivity is predictive of responses to affective media content, and whether such media response styles are predictive of depressive symptom

Bridging jurisdictions and legislatures: an LLM ensemble and arbiter framework for automated legal risk triage in digital media.

INTRODUCTION: Autonomous and semi-automated AI tools are increasingly involved in digital-media workflows, creating a need for reliable preliminary screening of legal risks before publication or moderation decisions are made. METHODS: This study presents an LLM Ensemble and Arbiter framework for cross-jurisdiction legal risk triage in digital media. The framework combines: (i) jurisdiction-specific legal grounding through a structured legal knowledge base (LawKB; 61 legal cards covering Ukrainian and EU norms), (ii) five heterogeneous open-weight LLMs, and (iii) a reproducible arbitration pol…

Attachment Anxiety and Relationship Satisfaction in the Digital Era: The Contribution of Social Media Jealousy and Electronic Partner Surveillance.

Social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram) are woven into modern romantic relationships, particularly among young adults. Grounded in the attachment framework, this study expands on previous literature by using a longitudinal design to examine social media jealousy and electronic partner surveillance as mediators between attachment anxiety and relationship satisfaction. Over a 2-year span, 322 young adults aged 18-29 years and in a romantic relationship completed questionnaires about their social media use, attachment orientation, and relationship satisfaction. Results showed that soci

The longitudinal impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on adolescents' internalizing symptoms, substance use, and digital media use.

The present study examined the long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on adolescent internalizing symptoms, substance use, and digital media use before and during the pandemic. A nationally representative longitudinal cohort of 3718 Israeli adolescents aged 12-16 at baseline completed measures of internalizing symptoms (anxiety, depression, and somatization), the prevalence of substance use (i.e., previous 30-day use of tobacco, alcohol, and cannabis), and average daily use of internet/television, video games, and social media. Social support and daily routines were assessed as potential p…

Active bystandership by youth in the digital era: Microintervention strategies for responding to social media-based microaggressions and cyberbullying.

Microaggressions are intentional or unintentional slights, insults, invalidations, and offensive behaviors that communicate hostile or derogatory messages to minoritized populations. When microaggressions cross over to social media, they can be considered a form of cyberbullying, which occurs over digital devices and harms, threatens, undermines, or socially excludes others. Microaggressions and cyberbullying have adverse mental health outcomes for racial and cultural minority youth, and there is an urgent need for practical strategies youth can use online to interrupt and disarm negative and

A Machine Learning Approach to Screen for Otitis Media Using Digital Otoscope Images Labelled by an Expert Panel.

BACKGROUND: Otitis media includes several common inflammatory conditions of the middle ear that can have severe complications if left untreated. Correctly identifying otitis media can be difficult and a screening system supported by machine learning would be valuable for this prevalent disease. This study investigated the performance of a convolutional neural network in screening for otitis media using digital otoscopic images labelled by an expert panel. METHODS: Five experienced otologists diagnosed 347 tympanic membrane images captured with a digital otoscope. Images with a majority expert

The Institutional Black Box of Friction Between Digital Agility Demands and Clinical Bureaucracy in Hospital Social Media Management.

BACKGROUND: In the contemporary healthcare landscape, hospitals face a paradox between the need for digitally agile, emotionally engaging communication and the rigid, risk-averse nature of clinical bureaucracy. While social media enables narrative-based engagement, its implementation in hospitals remains constrained. This study aims to examine how institutional dynamics shape the implementation of narrative content and to explain the gap between audience engagement and observable electronic word-of-mouth (e-WOM). METHODS: This study employs a qualitative approach using Directed Qualitative Co

Development and evaluation of a digital single-session reappraisal intervention to shift negative self-focused social media interpretations.

Social media is fraught with ambiguity and opportunities for making skewed interpretations. Negative interpretation bias, or the tendency to assign negative meanings in response to ambiguous information, is associated with mental health problems like depression and anxiety, while positive interpretation bias, or the tendency to make positive interpretations in response to ambiguity, may be protective. Interpretation bias is a modifiable treatment target in cognitive interventions. Reappraisal, which involves considering different perspectives, may hold promise for shifting negative self-focuse

Problematic Social Media Use, Availability Distress, and Digital Status Seeking: Links to Friendship Network Structure among U.S. Adolescents.

Social media provides youth with means to pursue and satisfy developmental needs for social belonging and status. Among multiple ways that youth engage with social media, availability distress, problematic social media use, and digital status seeking reflect how developmental needs of belonging and status are expressed in digital contexts. We examined how these manifestations of belonging and status needs were associated with friendship network structure. We tested how problematic social media use, availability distress, and digital status seeking were linked to similarity, popularity, and act

Digital She-nanigans: Social media users' response toward online hostilities targeting a female science communicator with marginalized identities.

Online hostility poses a growing societal challenge, yet quantitative evidence on how social media users respond to different kinds of hostility targeting different identities is limited, even though insights into bystander perceptions are detrimental to combat the online hate endemic. This online experiment (N = 461) examines cognitive (perceived acceptability), affective (negative emotions), and behavioral (intervention intentions) responses to varyingly hostile comments (impolite vs uncivil vs intolerant) directed at a female science communicator with different ethnic (Black vs White) and L
