[Surgical strategy for the treatment of congenital biliary dilatation based on the location of intrahepatic bile duct dilatation].

Congenital biliary dilatation used to be regarded as having a good prognosis. However, some recent long-term follow-up studies have shown there to be quite a high incidence of postoperative intrahepatic bile duct (IHBD) stone formation. In most of the cases in whom IHBD stones form, the IHBD were found to be dilated as the time of initial surgery. Therefore, preoperative evaluation of IHBD dilatation using various imaging studies is extremely important. Surgically, in cases involving structure of the common hepatic duct (CHD) with dilatation above the structure, resection of the stricture and

[Pneumographic signs of poorly compensated hydrocephalus].

A definition of "Hydrocephalus not completely arrested" is not easy to be given. Cerebral pneumography represents the most detailed neuroradiological examination. In spite of this, neither its analysis nor its measurements bring definite criteria for the favorable moment of locating a shunting system in that case. These criteria are reviewed systemetically. It is pointed out that only a careful synthesis of all signs can give a univoque answer, may be doubtful but never wrong. It is suggested from the personal experience that radioisotope cisternography is better suited for judging the state o

Serotonin-positive neuroendocrine neoplasm with pancreatic ductal dilation in which cytological immunostaining contributed to the diagnosis.

A 52-year-old man was transported via an ambulance because of syncope and the passage of tarry stools, which had been noted the previous day. He was diagnosed with upper gastrointestinal bleeding from a gastric ulcer and underwent endoscopic hemostasis. Prior to endoscopy, abdominal computerized tomography performed for gastrointestinal bleeding revealed pancreatic duct dilation. After discharge, abdominal imaging revealed a strongly enhancing tumor (5 mm) with caudal pancreatic duct dilation. Endoscopic retrograde pancreatography revealed that the main pancreatic duct was interrupted at the b

Caroli's disease: radiologic spectrum with pathologic correlation.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of our study was to describe the spectrum of radiologic and pathologic features of Caroli's disease. CONCLUSION: Caroli's disease and its complications have overlapping radiologic appearances that reflect the underlying pathology of fibrosis, ductal dilatation, cholangitis, stone formation, and malignancy.

[Hysteroscopy in the diagnosis of postmenopausal uterine bleeding].

Postmenopausal bleeding is a special diagnostic problem in gynecology on account of inadequate specimen obtained during dilatation and curettage for pathologic examination. Instead, hysteroscopy proves to be an ideal procedure in defining the cause of bleeding through direct vision of the pathologic lesions in the uterine cavity. In this series, hysteroscopy was performed in 150 patients with postmenopausal bleeding. The causes of bleeding enumerated by the order of frequency of occurrence are atrophic endometrium, exogenous estrogen effect, unremoved IUD, endometrial carcinoma, submucous myom

Small cystic lesions of the pancreas: clinical significance and findings at follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Our purpose was to correlate the imaging findings of small cystic pancreatic lesions to the incidence of growth on follow-up imaging and their pathologic diagnoses. METHODS: CT images for 159 patients with cystic pancreatic lesions were retrospectively evaluated and lesions were assessed for size, number, connection to the main pancreatic duct (MPD), MPD dilatation, and any presence of loculation, wall irregularity, thick septations, or solid components. A total of 86 patients had follow-up imaging with time periods of less than 6 months (n = 21), 6-12 months (n = 22), 1-2 years (

Flow-mediated dilation as a marker of endothelial dysfunction in pulmonary diseases: A narrative review.

The endothelium is an active and crucial component of vessels and produces several key regulatory factors for the homeostasis of the entire organism. Endothelial function can be investigated invasively or non-invasively, both in the coronary and peripheral circulation. A widely accepted method for the assessment of endothelial function is measurement of flow-mediated dilation (FMD), which evaluates the vascular response to changes in blood flow. In this current review, we describe FMD applications in the clinical setting of different respiratory diseases: acute SARS-COV2 infection, pulmonary e

Aortic root dilation in a child with Marfan syndrome and mosaic Turner syndrome.

Patients with a known genetic cause of aortic root dilation usually have a single underlying aetiology, either a single gene defect as in Marfan syndrome or chromosomal anomaly as in Turner syndrome. However, it is possible, although unlikely, for a patient to inherit multiple independent risk factors for aortic root dilation. We describe such a patient, who inherited Marfan syndrome and a very unusual form of mosaic Turner syndrome. Long-term follow-up of this patient may provide insight into the natural history of this unique genetic combination.

Mitochondrial Creatine Kinase Attenuates Pathologic Remodeling in Heart Failure.

BACKGROUND: Abnormalities in cardiac energy metabolism occur in heart failure (HF) and contribute to contractile dysfunction, but their role, if any, in HF-related pathologic remodeling is much less established. CK (creatine kinase), the primary muscle energy reserve reaction which rapidly provides ATP at the myofibrils and regenerates mitochondrial ADP, is down-regulated in experimental and human HF. We tested the hypotheses that pathologic remodeling in human HF is related to impaired cardiac CK energy metabolism and that rescuing CK attenuates maladaptive hypertrophy in experimental HF. ME

Congenital segmental dilatation of the colon in a newborn: a radiologic perspective of an unusual entity.

A newborn with congenital segmental dilatation of the intestine affecting the colon is presented. This rare condition, unrelated to Hirschsprung's disease, may affect any portion of the bowel and is characterized by focal dilatation of a segment of bowel flanked by normal proximal and distal bowel. While reported in the surgical literature, congenital segmental dilatation of the intestine has not been reported in the pediatric radiology literature even though pediatric radiologists may be the first to encounter imaging suggesting the diagnosis. We therefore present the characteristic imaging f
