Epidemiology of Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense Diphyllobothriasis, Japan, 2001-2016.

We report 958 cases of cestodiasis occurring in Japan during 2001-2016. The predominant pathogen was Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense tapeworm (n = 825), which caused 86.1% of all cases. The other cestode species involved were Taenia spp. (10.3%), Diplogonoporus balaenopterae (3.3%), and Spirometra spp. (0.2%). We estimated D. nihonkaiense diphyllobothriasis incidence as 52 cases/year. We observed a predominance of cases during March-July, coinciding with the cherry salmon and immature chum salmon fishing season, but cases were present year-round, suggesting that other fish could be involved in t…

The Things They Carry: Diphyllobothriasis at Sea, a Case Report.

Diphyllobothrium, also known as the "Broad Tapeworm" or "Fish Tapeworm," is a genus of Cestoda acquired through the consumption of undercooked fish. Although infection by a Diphyllobothrium spp. in the United States is rare, it remains an important global zoonosis, with an estimated burden of approximately 20 million people worldwide. A seldom on the Primary Care Physician's differential diagnosis in the United States, Diphyllobothrium spp. should be considered more readily when treating operational service members as they are exposed to endemic regions more frequently than the civilian popula

Total blood count, urine analysis, chest fluorography, coproovoscopic tests, test for occult blood, fibrogastroduodenoscopy, blood biochemical tests, ECG were conducted. By hemoglobinemia the patients were divided into three groups: hemoglobinemia (group 1), 120-130 g/l (group 2), under 120 g/l (group 3). RESULTS: Most patients of groups 1 and 2 felt healthy. New cases of human diphyllobothriasis in Patagonia, Argentina.

The purpose of the paper is to describe 4 new cases of human diphyllobothriasis in Patagonia, Argentine. Adult parasites recovered were submitted to morphological and histological analyses for taxonomic identification. The etiological agent found was always Diphyllobothrium latum and all the cases were autochthonous. These data combined with previous information make the number of autochthonous human cases of diphyllobothriosis registered in Argentina increase to 18.

Diphyllobothriasis latum: the first child case report in Taiwan.

Diphyllobothriasis latum is an intestinal parasitosis caused by the ingestion of mostly raw fresh-water fish containing plerocercoids of Diphyllobothrium latum. We report an 8-year-old boy who came to our hospital with the complaint of a tapeworm hanging from the anus after defecation. The other symptom was mild abdominal cramping for a period of 1 year. The laboratory examination did not reveal anemia or vitamin B12 deficiency. Examination of gravid proglottids with rosette-like central uterus and typically operculated eggs of D. latum confirmed the diagnosis. The morphologic characters of pr…

Diphyllobothriasis associated with salmon consumption in Pacific Coast states.

A review of requests for niclosamide ( Niclocide or Yomesan ) made to the Centers for Disease Control Parasitic Diseases Drug Service indicated that an outbreak of diphyllobothriasis occurred in west coast states in 1980, and in the Los Angeles area in 1981. Our investigation of 52 infections that occurred in 1980 implicates fresh salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) as the host for the Diphyllobothrium parasite in 82% of the persons interviewed. We describe here common symptoms of the infection, methods of fish preparation employed by infected individuals, and epidemiologic data. We suggest that change…
