The major disease processes affecting the aorta are aortic aneurysms and dissections. Aneurysms are usually described in terms of their anatomic location, with thoracic aortic aneurysms (TAAs) involving the ascending and descending aorta in the thoracic cavity and abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) involving the infrarenal abdominal aorta. Both thoracic and abdominal aortas are elastic arteries, and share similarities in their physical structures and cellular components. However, thoracic and abdominal aortas differ in their biochemical properties and the origin of their vascular smooth muscle

An 86-year-old man with an abdominal aortic aneurysm was diagnosed with type B aortic dissection accompanied by a patent false lumen that started at the distal arch of the thoracic aorta and terminated at the left common iliac artery. Meticulous preoperative assessment detected 3 large intimal tears in the descending aorta, abdominal aortic aneurysm, and left common iliac artery. We performed single-stage thoracic and abdominal endovascular aneurysm repair and concomitant axillary-axillary bypass. The abdominal aortic aneurysm with type B aortic dissection was successfully treated using a sing

BACKGROUND: Although Marfan's syndrome is a disease with various phenotypes, but the major mechanism of death is cardiovascular complication. Aortic dissection is a major cause of death in Marfan syndrome.
CASE REPORT: A 30-year-old man with severe refractory chest and left flank pain and history of previously surgically repaired Type A aortic dissection was referred to the hospital. His typical manifestations of Marfan's syndrome were identified. Cardiovascular imaging showed an acute spiral dissection in the descending aorta extending to the left renal and femoral arteries with no evidence

Aortic dissection (AD) is a rare and potentially fatal condition that may be diagnosed late. During an emergency or elective abdominal ultrasound (US) examination, when going to evaluate the abdominal aorta for other reasons, it may happen that we find ourselves suspecting an AD. It is therefore important to know the US characteristics of this pathology to avoid wrong or missed diagnoses. Here, we present our practical experience regarding the application of US in the study of the abdominal aorta, which allowed us on several occasions to find an unexpected dissection in patients brought to our

Background Here, we report the mid-term results of endovascular treatment of isolated dissection of the abdominal aorta, which is a very rare pathology. Materials and methods A total of 11 patients (4 males (36.3%) and 7 females (63.6%)) aged 42-72 (mean, 60.3 ± 10.45) years with isolated dissection of the abdominal aorta underwent endovascular stent-graft treatment at our institution between August 2010 and September 2015. Eight patients were symptomatic, and the remaining three were asymptomatic. The asymptomatic patients had aortic aneurysms coexisting with dissection. Eight patients withou

BACKGROUND: Aortic fenestration is rarely required for patients with acute or chronic aortic dissection. To better define its role and the indications for its use and to evaluate its success at relieving organ or limb malperfusion, we reviewed our experience with direct fenestration of the aorta.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of all consecutive aortic fenestrations performed between January 1, 1979, and December 31, 1999, was performed. Fourteen patients, 12 men and two women (mean age, 59.6 years; range, 43-81), underwent fenestration of the aorta. All patients were hypertensive and had

We described a case of the malign course of the abdominal aorta bifurcation in a 75-year old woman with the case history of a successfully removed neurinom of the eleventh thoracic root on the left side. Despite a timely diagnosis with the recurrence of a spinal tumor being ruled out and followed by the streptokinase therapy, the course of the disease was lethal. Another six lethal cases of the thrombosis of the abdominal aorta studied retrospectively proved the necessity to improve both the diagnostics and the therapy of this disease. The possibilities of modern angiosurgery are, however, bei

Here, we describe a case of a 61-year-old male patient with acute type A aortic dissection involving the ascending aorta, aortic arch, descending aorta, and the abdominal aorta down to the iliac bifurcation with evidence of left common iliac artery occlusion. Computed tomography angiography revealed progressive dissection into the superior mesenteric artery and left renal artery with no clinical signs of mesenteric ischemia. Emergent ascending aortic reconstruction of the dissected aorta relieves the leg ischemia. On a postoperative day 9, the evolution was complicated by massive right hemotho

The term acute aortic syndrome comprises in addition to classic dissection also two recently described entities--penetrating ulcer and intramural haematoma. Forty-two necropsy cases of acute aortic syndrome were encountered during the last six years--41 dissections and one penetrating ulcer; the intramural haematoma was not seen. According to the DeBakey classification, there were 26 dissections of type I, 8 of type II, 1 of type IIIA, and 4 of type IIIB; in 2 cases the dissection was confined to the abdominal aorta. The dissection had a chronic character in four cases. Aortic rupture was foun

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) has been associated with a number of vascular abnormalities of which the most widely known is intracranial aneurysm (Berry aneurysm). Arterial dissections involving both the thoracic and abdominal aorta, coronary, cervical and vertebral arteries have been anecdotally reported usually within the context of a medical emergency. As hypertension is a frequent early accompaniment of ADPKD (50 - 70% of nonazotemic patients) the occurrence of these dissections has commonly been attributed to hypertension. However, the question arises whether ADPKD

Cardiovascular malformations, especially coarctation of the aorta and bicuspid aortic valve, are common in patients with Turner's syndrome. Only 46 patients with aortic dissection and/or rupture have been described. All patients had associated aortic dilation or aneurysm. In all cases except three, involvement of the ascending aorta was present, making surgery often imperative. We describe a rare case of a DeBakey type IIIb aortic dissection (without involvement of the proximal aorta) in a patient with Turner's syndrome mosaicism. The dissection occurred two weeks after a caesarean section bec

The treatment of aortic dissections type B Stanford using endovascular stents represents one of the newest advances in the treatment of this diseases, less invasive alternative to classic surgical repair. Aortic stent-grafts initially were used in treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms, and then to treat aneurysms, dissections and traumatic ruptures of the descending aorta, with good early and mid-term outcomes. Thoracic aortic aneurysms are frequently diagnosed in mid-age or elderly patients who have arterial hypertension, coronary artery disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Scien

There have been few reports of an aberrant right subclavian artery in patients with aortic dissection. The diagnostic and therapeutic implications of the association of these two abnormalities are important and potentially ominous. Two patients with extensive type III dissections of the thoracic and abdominal aorta are described. In one patient, extension of the dissection into the aberrant right subclavian artery led to eventual exsanguination into the esophagus. In the second patient, cross-clamping of the abdominal aorta proximal to the left subclavian artery at surgery resulted in complete

BACKGROUND: Aneurysms are associated with a mortality rate of 81% or more in cases of rupture. Intraluminal thrombus (ILT) is a common complication of aneurysms, it can greatly increase the risk of rupture. Especially for some of the more complex aneurysms, physicians need to consider the risk of thrombosis or progression and precisely formulate a treatment plan. Therefore, it is particularly important to assess the level of thrombosis risk through haemodynamics.
OBJECTIVE: To analyse the haemodynamic indices and compare the thrombosis risk in a double false lumen abdominal aortic dissection

A 66-year-old man presented with an enlarging abdominal aorta false lumen, after type A aortic dissection repair. Residual entries were located at the left renal artery, abdominal aorta, and left external iliac artery. The patient underwent endovascular aortic repair with left renal artery stenting to close the entries. Completion aortography showed no false lumen flow without an endoleak, and contrast-enhanced computed tomography 1 month after the procedure demonstrated complete false lumen thrombosis. A total endovascular approach is possible for abdominal aneurysmal dilation in chronic aort

OBJECTIVES: We present our experience with one-stage replacement of thoracic aneurysm from the ascending aorta to the thoracoabdominal aorta.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fourteen patients (10 male and 4 female; mean age 53.6 ± 12.4 years) with extended thoracic aortic aneurysms underwent graft replacement. The pathology of the diseased aorta was chronic aortic dissection in 13 patients and intraoperative retrograde aortic dissection in 1 patient. Five patients had Marfan syndrome. In a previous operation, 1 patient had undergone the Bentall procedure, 4 had hemiarch replacement for acute type A dis

Non-contrast enhanced chest computed tomography (CT) carries a low sensitivity for acute aortic dissection; CT Angiography remains the gold standard. We highlight the potential utility of non-contrast CT for detection of aortic dissection in a case of a young, immunocompromised man presenting with acute abdominal pain and renal injury. Given elevated creatinine, an initial non-contrast chest CT demonstrated subtle findings suggestive of aortic dissection (aneurysmal dilation of the proximal ascending aorta as well as displaced calcified intimal flap/intraluminal high linear density in the thor

The celiac artery, also known as the celiac trunk, originates from the abdominal aorta at the level of the 12th thoracic vertebra. Arising from the anterior aorta, this ultrashort artery plays an integral role in supplying blood to the stomach, liver, spleen, pancreas, and proximal duodenum. Arterial dissection is a life-threatening emergency most frequently reported in the aorta, while visceral arterial dissections remain uncommon or may be undetected. A dissection involves a tear in the artery wall, which can lead to serious complications, including compromised arterial supply, end-organ isc

BACKGROUND: Factors associated with dissection from inflammatory aortic aneurysms may be different from those in the general population.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk factors for aortic dissection/rupture in patients with giant cell arteritis (GCA) and aortic aneurysms.
METHODS: A population-based incident cohort of patients with a diagnosis of GCA from 1950 to 2004 was used. All patients with aortic aneurysms diagnosed 1 year prior to GCA diagnosis or any time thereafter were included. Cox proportional hazard models were used to evaluate risk factors for aortic d
