This analysis examines the terms "domestication" and "selection" presented in Darwin's The variation of animals and plants under domestication, and the significance he gave to these concepts. This approach focuses on how Darwin drew upon knowledge generated centuries earlier by experts in breeding and cultivation to modify prevailing definitions and use this semantic shift as a primary instrument to defend his theory. The construction of the "analogy" between natural and artificial selection was not merely a heuristic resource, but rather the result of an inductive generalization grounded in i

Single-factor and orthogonal experiments were conducted to investigate the biological characteristics of Dichomitus squalens strains isolated from wild fruiting bodies collected in Tekes County, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Building upon the optimal mycelial culture conditions identified, domestication cultivation studies were performed, including experiments to induce fruiting body formation. Liquid strains were inoculated into substrates to monitor developmental stages from primordia formation to mature fruiting bodies, with macroscopic characteristics recorded throughout the cultivatio

Transgenic papaya is widely publicized for controlling papaya ringspot virus. However, the impact of particle bombardment on the genome remains unknown. The transgenic SunUp and its progenitor Sunset genomes were assembled into 351.5 and 350.3 Mb in nine chromosomes, respectively. We identified a 1.64 Mb insertion containing three transgenic insertions in SunUp chromosome 5, consisting of 52 nuclear-plastid, 21 nuclear-mitochondrial and 1 nuclear genomic fragments. A 591.9 kb fragment in chromosome 5 was translocated into the 1.64 Mb insertion. We assembled a gapless 9.8 Mb hermaphrodite-speci

Modern humans exhibit phenotypic traits and molecular events shared with other domesticates that are thought to be by-products of selection for reduced aggression. This is the human self-domestication hypothesis. As one of the first types of responses to a novel environment, epigenetic changes may have also facilitated early self-domestication in humans. Here, we argue that fish species, which have been recently domesticated, can provide model systems to study epigenetic drivers in human self-domestication. To test this, we used in silico approaches to compare genes with epigenetic changes in

Charles Darwin, while trying to devise a general theory of heredity from the observations of animal and plant breeders, discovered that domesticated mammals possess a distinctive and unusual suite of heritable traits not seen in their wild progenitors. Some of these traits also appear in domesticated birds and fish. The origin of Darwin's "domestication syndrome" has remained a conundrum for more than 140 years. Most explanations focus on particular traits, while neglecting others, or on the possible selective factors involved in domestication rather than the underlying developmental and genet

Laboratory production of botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) began more than 90 y ago for medical, military, and later pharmaceutical applications, creating one of the longest-running examples of microbial cultivation under sustained human control. A single Clostridium botulinum Group I lineage, Army Hall A (AHA), was established by the US military in 1942 and later gave rise to Hall A-hyper (HAH), the strain widely used for pharmaceutical BoNT production. We analyzed more than 1,000 C. botulinum genomes to identify AHA's closest relatives and to infer the most recent common ancestor (MRCA) shared wit

The domestication of perennial crops in the Mediterranean Basin remains unclear, particularly regarding the genomic consequences of human-mediated demographic shifts and selection. We analysed 8.1 million single nucleotide polymorphisms from 96 cultivated almond (Prunus dulcis) accessions from Europe, North America, Central Asia, and New Zealand, alongside four wild relatives. Population structure analyses revealed four geographically differentiated cultivated groups (Central Asian, North American, and two European) and three wild populations (P. spinosissima, P. orientalis, and P. fenzliana).

Nectar is a hub for plant-pollinator interactions, yet gene-level causal links between plant genetic variation, pollinator foraging, and nectar microbial assembly remain poorly resolved. Using near-isogenic lines, innovative field time-lapse monitoring of pollinator visits, and long-read amplicon sequencing of nectar microbiota, we show that a natural single-nucleotide variant at a cell-wall invertase gene (HaCWINV2) controls sunflower nectar chemistry and influences both pollinators and microbes. Plants homozygous for a loss-of-function HaCWINV2 allele produce sucrose-rich nectar, resulting i

Coilia nasus, a nutritionally and economically valuable migratory fish, has long relied on natural bait for its cultivation. However, the inherent instability of natural bait supplies poses a major bottleneck for large-scale aquaculture, necessitating a transition to formulated diets. To elucidate the adaptive response mechanisms underlying this dietary transition, we conducted sampling at three critical stages of feed domestication. This research revealed that while dietary shifts led to moderate alterations in muscle lipid and protein content, overall growth performance remained largely unaf

The yellowfin seabream (Acanthopagrus latus) is a significant economic fish along the southeast coast of China. Recently, the drastic decline in the wild populations, exacerbated by overfishing and climate change, has heightened our reliance on aquaculture. However, the current lack of research on its domestication hinders effective conservation of wild populations and balanced management alongside the aquaculture industry. Studies on body characteristics have shown that wild yellowfin seabream possess a higher body, while cultured ones exhibit a wider body. Whole-genome SNP analysis revealed

BACKGROUND: Most reports of domesticated plants that involve a domestication gradient or inter-specific hybridization in Mexico have focused on those used as food. This study provides knowledge about these processes in two aromatic medicinal plants, Agastache mexicana (Lamiaceae) and A. m. subsp. xolocotziana, widely used in Mexican traditional medicine for the treatment of gastrointestinal ailments and for their sedative effect. Different populations of A. mexicana along a gradient of domestication are found in the foothills of the Popocatepetl volcano of central Mexico, while in this same ar

Domesticated species differ from their wild ancestors in a number of traits, generally referred to as the domesticated phenotype. Reduced fear of humans is assumed to have been an early prerequisite for the successful domestication of virtually all species. We hypothesized that fear of humans is linked to other domestication related traits. For three generations, we selected Red Junglefowl (ancestors of domestic chickens) solely on the reaction in a standardized Fear of Human-test. In this, the birds were exposed for a gradually approaching human, and their behaviour was continuously scored. T

The carotenoid-binding protein (CBP) of the domesticated silkworm, Bombyx mori, a major determinant of cocoon color, is likely to have been substantially influenced by domestication of this species. We analyzed the structure of the CBP gene in multiple strains of B. mori, in multiple individuals of the wild silkworm, B. mandarina (the putative wild ancestor of B. mori), and in a number of other lepidopterans. We found the CBP gene copy number in genomic DNA to vary widely among B. mori strains, ranging from 1 to 20. The copies of CBP are of several types, based on the presence of a retrotransp

Despite the high morbidity of mental disorders in old age, psychotherapy take-up, especially by multi-morbid, very old patients, is still negligible, immobility being a significant constraining factor of access. So far, variations of standard psychotherapy adapted to meet these circumstances, such as home visits providing psychotherapy are not widespread and their effectiveness unexplored. An explorative study applying the 'Grounded Theory' method examined medical letters, consultation reports and session protocols of 7 psychotherapies involving 77-89-year-old patients; it also described the s

INTRODUCTION: Domestic hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) cases are relatively widespread, with an overall annual incidence of approximately 1/100,000 reported in a British study covering several million patients. All-causes mortality is three times higher within HP-affected patients than amongst the general population.
STATE OF THE ART: Cases of HP are usually diagnosed as 'farmer's lung' (FL) and 'bird fancier's lung' (BFL) diseases, however we suggest that other domestic causes, such as humidifier lung, hot tub pneumonitis, feather duvet and domestic exposure to moulds may be more frequent

No compilation of women's health care is complete without confronting domestic violence and sexual assault. Long recognized as a health care and physician issue, intimate partner violence continues to be one of the most frequent causes for injury and death to women in the United States and worldwide. According to the Commonwealth Fund survey in 1998, 31% of women reported either physical or sexual abuse from a husband or boyfriend. One in five American women also reported being raped during their lifetime. Careful assessment and universal screening are important tools for the primary care phys

The domestic buffalo is an indispensable livestock resource to millions of smallholder farmers in developing countries, particularly in Asia. Although its reproductive biology is basically similar to that of cattle, there are important differences and unique characteristics that need to be considered in order to apply modern reproductive technologies to improve its productivity. Under most smallholder production systems, the reproductive efficiency of buffalo is compromised by factors related to climate, management, nutrition and diseases. However, when managed and fed properly, buffalo can ha
