Screening for pregnancy risk-drinking.

The efficacy of alcohol screening questionnaires, the TWEAK, T-ACE, NET, MAST, and CAGE, in detecting periconceptional risk-drinking, > or = 1 oz absolute alcohol/day, was investigated in 4743 African-American women attending an inner-city prenatal clinic who had reported ever drinking. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, efficiency, follow-up rates, and receiver operating characteristics of the questionnaires were examined to compare the overall effectiveness of the questionnaires and their performance at cut-points defining positive scores ranging from 1 to 3. Relatively lit…

Recent developments in alcoholism:public drinking.

Drinking in bars and other public establishments has been a relatively neglected subject of research, despite its epidemiological significance. This chapter briefly summarizes the findings of observational studies in bars and taverns, as well as general population surveys on the correlates of tavern patronage. Recent developments in the control of public drinking are described. It is argued that greater attention should be placed on prevention programs that focus on drinking environments. In particular, the emergence of server intervention programs represents a promising new mechanism for the …

Predriving riders and drinking drivers.

A social learning model was used to investigate why young adolescents, 15 years of age and under, ride with drinking drivers. A total of 384 adolescents completed a self-report survey instrument. Zero-ordered correlations and regression procedures indicated that adolescents in this age group have a high frequency rate of riding with drinking drivers, and that social learning variables are important in explaining the behavior. Four of the five social learning subsets were accepted as significant in understanding the social dynamics of the problem. Prevention efforts that focus on predriving you…

Factors affecting the drinking driver.

Although the relationship between alcohol and traffic safety has been the subject of numerous studies, much remains unknown about the mechanisms by which alcohol contributes to traffic accidents. A number of other factors, which are reviewed in this paper, also can contribute to car accidents. They may also interact with alcohol, perhaps in a complex manner. Therefore, multiple factors rather than one single factor may contribute to automobile accidents for those who drink and drive.

Maternal drinking and pregnancy outcome.

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) is a distinct pattern of malformation and mental impairment, to date associated only with advanced stages of maternal alcoholism. Children born to alcoholics are at risk for a wide range of problems, including one or a few of the characteristics of FAS. However, moderate to heavy drinking women, as a group, have a significantly increased probability of delivering smaller babies and having children who show some mild behavioral differences compared to controls whose mothers drink much less or not at all. The present review focuses primarily on recent scientific and …

Opioid involvement in alcohol drinking.

A large body of evidence indicates that the endogenous opioid system plays an important role in maintaining alcohol drinking behavior. Evidence is reviewed that indicates that the reinforcing properties of alcohol that lead to continued and repeated bouts of drinking may be due, in part, to alcohol-induced activation of the endogenous opioid system. Much of this evidence is pharmacologic in nature. Blocking the action of endogenous opioid peptides via administration of opioid antagonists significantly attenuates alcohol consumption in animals under a variety of experimental conditions. In clin…

Drinking, thirst and water intoxication.

Drinking is an activity determined partly by oropharyngeal stimulation and gastrointestinal sensations as well as biochemical changes, and thirst need not be involved. It is sometimes disturbed in mania or depression. Overdrinking (polydipsia) is common in long-stay in-patients, but only gives rise to water intoxication when there is a variable functional renal abnormality such as SIADH causing water retention. In contrast, in affective disorders, disturbance of sodium retention may be seen, possibly representing failure of nervous vascular control as part of the mental illness.

Feeding and drinking behavior problems.

The physiologic and behavioral basis of normal canine and feline feeding is given in detail. Abnormalities of ingestive behavior include obesity and anorexia in both species, flank or blanket sucking in Doberman Pinschers, coprophagia and stone chewing in dogs, and wool chewing in cats. Drinking behavior is discussed briefly, and the abnormalities of hypernatremia (a failure of thirst) and psychogenic polydipsia and polyphagia are reviewed.

Occult coiled drinking straw aspiration.

A 23-year-old man had a 7-month history of recurrent right lower lobe pneumonia. Flexible fiber-optic bronchoscopy revealed an occluded bronchus intermedius. Rigid bronchoscopy demonstrated a coiled drinking straw in the bronchial lumen, which was removed by forceps. This article represents the first reported case of an aspirated coiled drinking straw obstructing an airway.

Lactic acidosis and beer drinking.

A patient is reported who developed lactic acidosis, hyponatraemia and features of the Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome following long term excessive ingestion of beer and lager. Intramuscular thiamine caused a rapid correction of the lactic acidosis, and the hyponatraemia was corrected by intravenous therapy. On discharge after six weeks of intramuscular Parentrovite the patient still retained some chronic features of the Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome.

Compulsive water drinking in pregnancy.

A case report of a pregnant woman with primary polydipsia is presented. The workup, including an investigation of the disturbance and the implications for fetal outcome, is described. The terms primary and secondary polydipsia are defined, and the differential diagnosis is discussed. Compulsive water drinking was finally diagnosed following psychiatric evaluation. A brief review of the literature concerning compulsive water drinking is presented.

Anencephalus and drinking water composition.

The mortality rate (stillbirths and infant deaths) from anencephalus from 1950-1969 in 36 cities of over 50,000 population in Canada showed a negative association (r = -.39) with the concentration of magnesium in water sampled at domestic taps. The mortality rates showed negative associations with mean income and longitude, and a multiple regression model using the three factors showed significant effects of each and accounted for 69% of the intercity variation in rates. There were no significant associations seen with water calcium concentration or total hardness. Income, magnesium and longit

Assessing self-determined motivation for drinking alcohol via the Comprehensive Relative Autonomy Index for Drinking.

INTRODUCTION: Self-Determination Theory (SDT) examines human motivation in multiple domains; however, the only existing measure assessing SDT-informed behavioral regulations for drinking focuses on responsible drinker behaviors, rather than drinking per se, which is important given the alignment between SDT and harm reduction approaches to alcohol use. The aim of this study was to test the structural validity of the SDT-informed Comprehensive Relative Autonomy Index for Drinking (CRAI-Drinking) among college students. METHODS: Participants included two convenience samples with a total of 630 …

Voluntary wheel-running reduces harmful drinking in a genetic risk model for drinking to intoxication.

Physical activity (PA) may provide an effective and equitable treatment option for addressing the harm associated with Alcohol Use Disorders (AUDs). Wheel-running (WR) - a well characterized rodent model of PA - reduces intake and craving for many drugs of abuse; however, its effects on models of harmful ethanol intake are mixed. This may in part be due to critical differences in drinking paradigm, genetics background, chronicity of ethanol, and the modality and duration of PA being tested. To compliment and extend prior work, we evaluated whether key stages of PA development would differentia…

Exclusively drinking sucrose or saline early in life alters adult drinking behavior by laboratory rats.

Proper fluid balance is critical for life. Learning plays an important role in shaping the appetitive behaviors required for drinking. Children often forego drinking plain water and instead consume beverages such as milk or juice. What effect this may have on adult thirst responses remains an open question. To model aspects of the human condition, we bred Sprague-Dawley rats and prevented the pups from obtaining fluid other than from nursing. Pups were weaned onto either tap water, 5% sucrose, or 0.45% saline, and given access to only that fluid for at least 7 weeks. We then measured intake of…
