Unusual Drug Fever Caused by Imipenem/Cilastatin and a Review of Literature.

INTRODUCTION: Drug fever is a febrile reaction caused by initiation of one drug or varieties of drugs and often disappears after cessation of the drug(s). Clinically, drug fever is frequently induced by antibiotics, anticonvulsants, and antineoplastics. There are few previous reports about drug fever caused by imipenem/cilastatin. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we described a 66-year-old man undergoing the Ivor Lewis esophagectomy for esophageal carcinoma, who developed drug fever. The patient had a high temperature with shivering after administration of imipenem/cilastatin for 7 days. Furthermore,…

Present status of drug resistance in cases of enteric fever in Rajasthan.

Drug Sensitivity of Salmonella typhi isolated from 30 blood culture positive cases of typhoid fever who presented between Nov. '93 to Aug. '94 was tested to determine their in vitro susceptibility to various antimicrobiols. 56.6% showed resistance to chloramphenicol, 70% to amoxycillin, 50% to amikacin, 43.3% to gentamycin, 40% to ampicillin, 33.3% to cotrimoxazole, 30% to cephalexin and very low resistance (6.6% each) to ceftriaxone and cefotaxime. All the 30 cases were sensitive to ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin. 17 chloramphenicol resistant typhoid cases in whom chloramphenicol was initially s

Hay fever treatment with combined antihistamine and cyclooxygenase-inhibiting drugs.

Twenty-eight ragweed-allergic patients with hay fever participated in a clinical trial that examined the pattern of symptom relief resulting from addition of a cyclooxygenase-inhibiting drug to standard antihistamine therapy. In the first week antihistamine use by the subjects was standardized, and subjects were oriented to use of the hay fever symptom diary. They were then allocated, according to symptom severity, to two treatment groups. One group received 120 mg of terfenadine and 300 mg of flurbiprofen (a cyclooxygenase-inhibiting drug) per day. Members of the other group received terfenad

Association of extensively drug resistant salmonella infection in children with typhoid fever.

OBJECTIVES: In resource limited countries facing a huge burden of multidrug resistant and extensively drug resistant (XDR) enteric fever, treatment is a great challenge on the part of a patient as well as a health care professional. This study was conducted to determine the association of XDR enteric fever with various studied factors among hospitalized culture-positive pediatric patients in a tertiary care hospital setup. METHODS: We conducted a descriptive observational study at The Karachi Adventist Hospital from July 01, 2019, to March 31, 2020 on 143 hospitalized children with culture pr

Cotton fever: an evanescent process mimicking sepsis in an intravenous drug abuser.

BACKGROUND: Although many complications of intravenous drug abuse are well described, "cotton fever" has had little mention in recent medical literature. Cotton fever is street terminology for the post-injection fever experienced by many drug users after "shooting up" with heroin reclaimed from a previously used cotton filter. CASE REPORT: We report on a 22-year-old man with a history of intravenous drug abuse with fever 30 min after injecting heroin. He was intensely diaphoretic, tachycardic, and febrile. His workup was negative for any infectious etiology and he later admitted to reusing th

Sirolimus-induced drug fever in a renal transplant patient: a case report.

Herein we have described the case of a male renal transplant recipient who developed drug fever apparently related to sirolimus. He had been stable under an immunosuppressive regimen of tacrolimus and mycophenolate mofetil, but developed acute cellular rejection at 5 years after transplantation due to noncompliance. Renal biopsy showed marked interstitial fibrosis, and immunosuppression was switched from mycophenolate to sirolimus, maintaining low tacrolimus levels. One month later he was admitted to our hospital for investigation of intermittently high fever, fatigue, myalgias, and diarrhea. …

Drug-induced fever: a clinical report and challenge test with calcium dobesilate.

A 54-year-old man was receiving calcium dobesilate for retinopathy and after 8 days he presented fever of more than 39 degrees C, generalized myalgia, chills and headache. Other causes of fever were ruled out. A challenge test was done with a single therapeutic oral dose of calcium dobesilate and fever appeared 20 h later and lasted 8 h. Our patient fulfils Young's stringent criteria for drug fever. To our knowledge drug-induced fever due to calcium dobesilate has not been reported previously.

Poststroke fever etiology: A case report and review of the literature on probable piperacillin-tazobactam-induced drug fever and agranulocytosis.

RATIONALE: Piperacillin-tazobactam is a widely used antibiotic, but its adverse effects, particularly drug fever and hematological toxicities, are often underestimated. The concurrent occurrence of drug fever and agranulocytosis may complicate the differential diagnosis of persistent or recurrent fever, particularly in patients with stroke-associated pneumonia. We report a case of probable piperacillin-tazobactam-associated drug fever and agranulocytosis and review the relevant literature. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 45-year-old woman with cerebral infarction complicated by stroke-associated pneumoni…

Use of drugs, perceived drug efficacy and preferred providers for febrile children: implications for home management of fever.

BACKGROUND: Community distribution of anti-malarials and antibiotics has been recommended as a strategy to reduce the under-five mortality due to febrile illnesses in sub-Saharan Africa. However, drugs distributed in these interventions have been considered weak by some caretakers and utilization of community medicine distributors has been low. The aim of the study was to explore caretakers' use of drugs, perceptions of drug efficacy and preferred providers for febrile children in order to make suggestions for community management of pneumonia and malaria. METHODS: The study was conducted in

Drug Repurposing: In Vitro Evaluation of Simeprevir as a Novel Antiviral Drug Against Severe Fever With Thrombocytopenia Syndrome Virus.

Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome Virus (SFTSV), a tick-borne virus with high mortality, currently lacks approved antiviral therapies. In this study, we evaluated the in vitro activity of 19 FDA-approved drugs against a clinical isolate of SFTSV using cell-based assays, and immunofluorescence analysis. Simeprevir, Novobiocin, and Levofloxacin hydrochloride demonstrated significant antiviral activity (EC50: 0.009774, 25.12, and 46.30 μM, respectively) with minimal cytotoxicity. Immunofluorescence analysis revealed a dose-dependent reduction in SFTSV nucleoprotein expression, correlati

Research progress on antiviral drugs and vaccines for severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome.

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS), caused by the SFTS virus (SFTSV), has emerged as a significant global public health threat. Infected patients may present with gastrointestinal, neurological, and cardiovascular ribavirin and favipiravir are currently used in clinical practice, their efficacy remains controversial, and treatment primarily relies on symptomatic and supportive care. To date, there is no standard treatment regimen for SFTSV infection, nor are there any approved vaccines. However, recent advances in SFTSV research and the application of novel technologies have op
