Opposite influences of mineral-associated and dissolved organic matter on the transport of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles through soil and aggregates.

The mechanism by which soil organic matter (SOM) controls nanoparticle transport through natural soils is unclear. In this study, we distinguished the specific effects of two primary SOM fractions, mineral-associated organic matter (MOM) and dissolved organic matter (DOM), on the transport of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (nHAP) through a loamy soil under the conditions of saturated steady flow and environmentally relevant solution chemistry (1 mM NaCl at pH 7). The results showed that MOM could inhibit the transport of nHAP by decreasing electrostatic repulsion and increasing mechanical strain

X-ray diffraction analysis of spontaneously draining calcinosis in scleroderma patients.

OBJECTIVES: Calcium hydroxyapatite (HA) is reported to be the major constituent of soft tissue calcinosis in patients with scleroderma (systemic sclerosis, SSc). Mechanical stress and local tissue hypoxia are thought to be important in the pathogenesis of SSc calcinosis. We sought to analyse spontaneously draining material from calcinosis sites in SSc patients using X-ray diffraction (XRD). METHOD: With approval from our local Institutional Review Board (IRB), eligible SSc patients consented to submit their spontaneously draining calcinosis samples for XRD analysis. All patients met the Ameri

A new and economic approach to synthesize and fabricate bioactive diopside ceramics using a modified domestic microwave oven. Part 2: effect of P2O5 additions on diopside bioactivity and mechanical properties.

In this work, diopside based ceramics was obtained by solid state reaction using conventional sintering (CS) and microwave sintering (MS). Moreover, different amounts of P2O5 (0.5-5.0 wt.%) have been added. It has been found that a relative density up to 95% theoretical was obtained for diopside containing 2.0 and 5.0 wt.% P2O5, sintered at 1250 °C for 2h and at 1075 °C only for 15 min using CS and MS. Excellent values of micro hardness (7.4 ± 0.1 GPa) and 3 point flexural strength (about 270 MPa) for samples containing 5 wt.% P2O5, sintered at 1075 °C for 15 min using MS were measured. Beside

Calcium hydroxylapatite injection for the patulous Eustachian tube.

The function of the E-tube is to adjust the balance of both sides of the ear drum. The patulous Eustachian tube (PET) is a rare disease and a benign condition. So, most of the doctors ignored this disease. But, patients with PET suffer from ear fullness, autophony, hearing their own breathing, and etc. Many treatment methods have been introduced and injection is also one way of treating the disease. We introduce an injection technique for the treatment of PET using calcium hydroxylapatitie (Radiesse®).

Microcalcifications associated with breast cancer: an epiphenomenon or biologically significant feature of selected tumors?

Radiographic mammary calcifications occur in 30-50% of breast cancers and constitute one of the most important diagnostic markers of both benign and malignant lesions of the breast. The presence of oxalate-type microcalcification appears to be a reliable criterion in favor of the benign nature of the lesion or, at most, of a lobular carcinoma in situ. In contrast, calcium hydroxyapatite (HA) crystals are associated with both benign and malignant breast tumors. Although the diagnostic value of microcalcifications in breast cancer is of great importance, the genesis of these calcifications is un

Calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate and hydroxyapatite crystal deposition in the joint: new developments relevant to the clinician.

The major types of crystals containing calcium, which causes arthropathy and periarticular disease, are calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate and basic calcium phosphates, including hydroxyapatite. Exciting advances include the identification of mutations in the gene ANKH associated with disordered inorganic pyrophosphate (PPi) transport in some kindred with familial chondrocalcinosis linked to chromosome 5p. In addition, central basic mechanisms governing cartilage calcification and their relationship to aging and osteoarthritis have now been elucidated. These include the role of plasma cell glycop

[Reduction of bony periodontal pockets with hydroxyapatite].

If you can't reduce a periodontal bone defect of more than 6 mm with a conservative therapy you can open up the pocket with a marginal incision. The granulation tissue must be removed carefully, open up the surrounding spongiosa and clean the tooth from calculus. HA-Granula is filled into the pocket but don't overfill it. Use Matrix-sutures to sew the wound very dense against saliva. A final splint stabilizes the tooth.

[Evaluation of hydroxyapatite implants in human periodontal osseous defects].

In this clinical study we evaluated the use of hydroxyapatite ceramic (HAP) implant in conjunction with the surgical treatment of periodontal osseous defects. Fifty-five defects in 23 patients were treated and filled with HAP particles (BDHAP-101). At 6 months and 12 months after the placement of particles, the sites were evaluated by gingival margin heights, periodontal pocket depths, attachment levels, tooth mobility, the gingival index (GI), and radiographic analyses. Oral hygiene status was estimated by the plaque index (PlI). There were significant improvements with regard to probe depth,

Advancements in hydroxyapatite-based nanosystems for targeting bone in osteoporosis: A review of current trends and future directions.

Osteoporosis (OP) is a prevalent skeletal disorder characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue, leading to increased bone fragility and a heightened risk of fractures, particularly among the elderly. This condition poses a significant global public health challenge, as osteoporotic fractures contribute substantially to morbidity, mortality, and escalating healthcare costs. Conventional treatments, such as calcium and vitamin D supplementation, often face limitations including side effects, suboptimal efficacy, and poor long-term compliance. Consequently, there is a growing

Nanohydroxyapatite as the key factor in bone regeneration.

Bone tissue is a complex material with remarkable durability, elasticity and resistance to mechanical forces, playing a key role in the musculoskeletal system. Hydroxyapatite, a naturally occurring bone-like mineral, is used in a variety of medical applications due to its compatibility with bone tissue. However, synthetic hydroxyapatite has some limitations, such as fragility and low resistance to mechanical straining. Recent developments in nanotechnology have led to the invention of nanohydroxyapatite, which improves bone regeneration and integration with surrounding tissues. The aim of the

Devitrite (Na2Ca3Si6O16) phase dominated nanostructured 45S5 bioactive glass: exploring its structural and biological properties.

This research study is primarily centred around calcination temperature and time influence on phase formation in bioactive glasses (BGs). In the present study, BG with a nominal composition of 45S5 was synthesized through the sol-gel process. The developed BGs then underwent heat treatment for various sintering durations and temperatures. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of the BGs reveals that the sintering process led to the crystallization of both devitrite (Na2Ca3Si6O16) and combeite (Na2Ca2Si3O9) phases. The field emission scanning electron microscopy study divulges morphological alterati

Dispersant and Protective Roles of Amphiphilic Poly(ethylene phosphate) Block Copolymers in Polyester/Bone Mineral Composites.

Composites of synthetic bone mineral substitutes (BMS) and biodegradable polyesters are of particular interest for bone surgery and orthopedics. Manufacturing of composite scaffolds commonly uses mixing of the BMS with polymer melts. Melt processing requires a high homogeneity of the mixing, and is complicated by BMS-promoted thermal degradation of polymers. In our work, poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) and poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) composites reinforced by commercial β-tricalcium phosphate (βTCP) or synthesized carbonated hydroxyapatite with hexagonal and plate-like crystallite shapes (hCAp and pCAp,

From Reparative Surgery to Regenerative Surgery: State of the Art of Porous Hydroxyapatite in Cranioplasty.

Decompressive craniectomy is one of the most common neurosurgical procedures, usually performed after neuropathological disorders, such as traumatic brain injury (TBI), but also vascular accidents (strokes), erosive tumours, infections and other congenital abnormalities. This procedure is usually followed by the reconstruction of the cranial vault, which is also known as cranioplasty (CP). The gold-standard material for the reconstruction process is the autologous bone of the patient. However, this is not always a feasible option for all patients. Several heterologous materials have been creat

Calcium phosphate nanoparticles for potential application as enamel remineralising agent tested on hydroxyapatite discs.

Calcium phosphate exhibits excellent biocompatibility, and with particle size in the nanoscale, calcium phosphate nanoparticles (CPNPs) were explored to replace the hydroxyapatite lost in the nanoporous teeth due to dental erosion. CPNPs (2% w/v) colloidally stabilised by sodium citrate were synthesised via co-precipitation. They were characterised in terms of particle size, morphology, crystallinity, Ca/P ratio and calcium ion release. To ensure uniformity of the substrate, hydroxyapatite (HA) discs were examined as an alternative substrate model to enamel. They were eroded in acetate buffer

Simultaneous engineering of nanofillers and patterned surface macropores of graphene/hydroxyapatite/polyetheretherketone ternary composites for potential bone implants.

Incorporating bioactive nanofillers and creating porous surfaces are two common strategies used to improve the tissue integration of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) material. However, few studies have reported the combined use of both strategies to modify PEEK. Herein, for the first time, dual nanoparticles of graphene oxide (GO) and hydroxyapatite (HAp) were incorporated into PEEK matrix to obtain ternary composites that were laser machined to create macropores with diameters ranging from 200 μm to 600 μm on the surfaces. The surface morphology and chemistry, mechanical properties, and cellular r
