BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis is a chronic disease caused by infection with the larvae of Echinococcus granulosus. The parasite's ability to establish persistent infection is partly due to its evolving immune evasion strategies. One strategy may involve the protective effect of arginase, which impedes the control of pathogens or tumors, whereas it remains largely unknown during E. granulosus infection. The authors studied the presence of ANCA, evaluated by indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) and ELISA for anti-lactoferrin (LF), and anti-myeloperoxidase antibodies (anti-MPO), in sera of 69 patients with cystic echinococcosis (CE). The effect of isatin on the E. granulosus cyst was studied. NMRI mice, which were infected with E. granulosus of sheep origin, were treated daily with isatin at a dose of 50 mg kg-1 for 18 days. A patient with an Echinococcus granulosus cyst of the liver was treated with mebendazole for 94 days before operation. The serum levels of mebendazole varied from 39.4-274 ng/ml.
