Transcranial Doppler sonography (TCD) is a noninvasive easy-performed method which can be repeated even in critically ill patients. It provides means to diagnose, quantify and monitor individual haemodynamic situation, and, probably, to predict the outcome of stroke. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of the TCD in the examination of vascular lesions in the early phase of acute cerebral ischemic disease. The results showed different vascular disturbanies in otherwise homogenous group of patients. The TCD examinations were carried out in 30 patients in the early phase of s

Neurosonography has proven to be helpful in neonatal brain diagnosis. Premature infants are at great risk for intraventricular hemorrhage and periventricular leukomalacia, key abnormalities affecting developmental outcome. Here we discuss technique, anatomy, variants and key points for diagnosis.

We present a 55-year-old man with repeated transient symptoms of vertebrobasilar arterial pathology. Physical examination detected no signs that would indicate the stenosis of the proximal subclavian artery segment. Ultrasound detected hemodynamic disorder of right vertebral artery, which correspond to a partial subclavian steal syndrome. Angiography shows fusiform aneurysm of ipsilateral subclavian artery in which central part is the base of hypoplastic vertebral artery. In the literature are rare reports of cases of partial subclavian steal syndrome caused by aneurysmal expansion of subclavi

Basilar artery occlusion (BAO) is generally considered an emergency and is associated with high mortality and poor functional outcome. Although cases with more benign course without thrombolysis treatment have occasionally been reported, to our knowledge there is only one previous report in which angiography, almost accidentally revealed a clinically unsuspected BAO. A 45-year-old man with treated hypertension and lipidemia had three distinct isolated episodes of dizziness, 2-3 months before he was referred by an internist for an ultrasound neurovascular evaluation. Neurological examination an

INTRODUCTION: Prematurity is a great health problem in our country and in the world. There are more than 11% of premature births in America annually, and in Europe this rate is between 5-10%. In Vojvodina, 9% of babies are born prematurely. Intracranial hemorrhage takes a sifnificant place in the morbidity of prematurely born children.
INTRACRANIAL HEMORRHAGE IN PREMATURE NEWBORN INFANTS: Incomplete CNS development of premature infants causes numerous complications, but it is also the factor which enables survival of extremely immature infants without sequelae. The management protocol depends

We have investigated 200 patients 0-4 months of age (boys 110 and girls - 90), 120 of them under 1 month of age and 80 children from 1 to 4 months. The evaluation of the neurologic status of patients was performed 40-60 minutes after feeding in a relaxed condition. From the additional methods of the investigation of the nervous system, the most informative was the neurosonoscopy. We have divided patients into two groups according to the clinical syndromes: I gr. neuro-reflexion irritation syndrome (118 patients), II gr.--depression syndrome (82 patients). According to the treatment regimen pat

Intracranial tumors are rare in the neonatal period, and generally the most common histological types are astrocytoma, medulloblastoma, choroid plexus papilloma and neuroectodermal tumors. The early diagnosis of these tumors is often very difficult. The authors report a case of a full-term newborn who presented with opisthotonus. A subependymal mass was detected by cerebral ultrasonography, and when the child was 1 month of age depigmentations appeared on the trunk and on the right leg, confirming the suspicion of tuberous sclerosis. At 3 months of age the child suffered infantile spasm with h

BACKGROUND: Transcranial Doppler examination (TCD) is a non invasive method capable of detecting the interruption of cerebral flow in patients with criteria of brain death. Its recognition as an alternative to isoelectric EEG for the diagnosis of brain death requires previous validation.
METHODS: Twenty-six patients in profound coma were examined by TCD. Of 23 patients with technically adequate study 13 manifested clinical criteria and EEG of brain death. Of these patients 9 had received barbiturate treatment and 4 had not.
RESULTS: Changes in the flow waves of the TCD were observed in the f

In a preliminary demonstration of cranial intraoperative real-time ultrasound, both supratentorial and posterior fossa scans displayed the pertinent anatomy. A grade III astrocytoma was visualized on the supratentorial scan as well. Ultrasound may be valuable for surgical planning and biopsy procedures because of its reliable depiction of intracranial anatomy and ease of use.

BACKGROUND: The intracranial translucency (IT) is described as echolucid space located in the fetal central nervous system corresponding to the fourth ventricle. Alteration in the first trimester is associated with neural tube defects (NTDs).
OBJECTIVE: To describe as part of the ultrasonographic assessment of the first quarter, the technical and the normal values of intracranial translucency, factors that affect its display, variability and reproducibility, diagnostic operational characteristics (sensitivity and specificity) and other utilities in the prenatal diagnosis.
METHODS: We conduct

The examination of 1712 neonates by using an ultrasound method provided the findings of the incidence and echographic pattern of subependymal hemorrhages (SEH). A long-term follow-up of 32 newborns with SEH detected at birth by dynamic brain echography indicated that the mental and motor development in 30 of them was normal, whereas 2 babies had mild specific growth retardation unrelated to SEH. EEG abnormalities were found in 9 of 20 examined children. It was suggested that SEH failed to affect the mental and nervous development in infants, regardless of the extent and site of an injury.

AIM: To evaluate whether abnormal resistive index or cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) on cranial ultrasound predicts disability (≥1 year) in infants with hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE).
METHOD: This was a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies comparing developmental outcomes of infants with HIE with normal versus abnormal resistive index or CBFV.
RESULTS: Twenty-six studies were included (pre-therapeutic hypothermia era, 20; therapeutic hypothermia era, six). Data from 15 studies (pre-therapeutic hypothermia, 10; therapeutic hypothermia, five) were available for meta-anal

Lenticulostriate vasculopathy (LSV) is a relatively common fi nding in routine cranial ultrasound examination that has been associated with many infectious and non-infectious conditions. The aim of this review was to provide a better understanding of LSV ultrasound fi nding, as well as the need for further laboratory and imaging examinations in infants. The most of the published studies represented small series, with few prospective long-term studies involving the control groups. Authors have mostly found an association between LSV, especially higher-grade (although there is no universally acc

Cranial ultrasound examinations are routinely performed in very preterm neonates. There is no widespread agreement on the optimal timing of these examinations. This review examines screening protocols and recommendations available for the timing of cranial ultrasound examinations in preterm neonates born before 32 wk of gestation. A systematic search was performed to find published screening protocols, and 18 articles were included in the final review. The protocols varied in their recommendations on timing, although at least one examination in the first week of life was universally recommende

There are no publications reporting on scan duration and Doppler use during neonatal cranial ultrasound scans. We investigated current practice of neonatal cranial ultrasound at four large tertiary neonatal intensive care units in Australia. Cranial scans were prospectively recorded between March 2015 and November 2016. Variables, including total number of scans, scan duration and frequency and duration of colour and spectral Doppler mode, were extracted. A total of 196 scans formed the final cohort. The median (range) number of scans for each neonate was 1 (1-12). The median (range) overall t
