Parasitic skin mites associated with wild birds are understudied members of host-parasite systems in Europe despite their ecological importance, potential role as disease vectors, and effects on host fitness. Using a multidisciplinary approach combining faunistic, ecological, and molecular methods, this study investigated two mite species that parasitize passerine birds in Hungary, Harpirhynchus dusbabeki and Blankaartia acuscutellaris. Birds were examined during field sampling conducted between 2022 and 2024 at bird ringing stations and through a nationwide volunteer bird-ringing network. Par

Biomimicry in waste management (WM) is commonly associated with closing material loops, improving resource efficiency, and treating waste as a resource. This approach is valuable, but it remains insufficient for assessing and governing how waste systems affect particular places, distribute environmental burdens, and connect responsible actors with the consequences of their decisions. To address this gap, the paper introduces "place as responsibility" as a complementary perspective for WM. Drawing on biomimicry as a heuristic perspective, together with resilience theory, niche construction theo

The genus Bartonella comprises over 40 species, most of which are haemoparasites of mammals. Herein, we describe Bartonella bennetti sp. nov., a novel member of the genus, isolated from field voles (Microtus agrestis) in Kielder Forest, UK. Polyphasic characterization of three strains (C271T, D105 and J117) of the proposed species indicated that they were closely related to members of phylogenetic lineage 3 (L3) of the genus. The average nucleotide identity (ANI) between C271T and other L3 species ranged between 88.8 and 90.6%, supporting the proposal of a new species. C271T shared ANIs approa

Hantaviruses are globally distributed reservoir-associated viruses that cause haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), mainly in Eurasia, and hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS; also termed hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, HPS), mainly in the Americas. Most human infections arise from exposure to rodent-contaminated environments, so clustered disease may reflect shared environmental exposure rather than interpersonal transmission. This Review uses China's long-term HFRS experience as a central case study for interface-centred preparedness. China demonstrates that sustained surveilla

This study quantifies the visual field configuration of common moorhens (Gallinula chloropus) to examine how sensory systems balance the competing demands of foraging and predator detection in structurally complex habitats. Using the ophthalmoscopic reflex method, we show that moorhens possess a vertically elongated but relatively narrow binocular field (maximum width ~34°, vertical extent 125°), coupled with extensive monocular coverage producing a near-panoramic cyclopean field (~300°). This configuration aligns with patterns observed in visually guided foragers and is consistent with a role

The head-neck system of birds is a highly complex structure that performs a variety of demanding and competing tasks. Morphofunctional adaptations to feeding specializations have previously been identified in the head and neck, but performance is also influenced by other factors such as its phylogenetic history. In order to minimize the effects of this factor, we here analyzed the anatomy of three closely related vultures that distinctly differ in feeding strategy. Vultures, as obligate scavengers, have occupied a special ecological niche by exclusively feeding on carrion. However, competition

In the bacterial population, phenotypic variability plays a part of structural and functional subsystem that occupies a special place in the relations of heterogenic populations by performing an important adaptive function in the common system of ecological connections of parasitocenosis. At the same time regularly varying microorganism phenotypes act as an independent system that are closely related with the conditions of the niches occupied by the causative agent. Each subsystem as part of parasitocenosis is provided by its intrinsic adaptive mechanisms, which in combination ensures the stab

The Bacillus cereus group includes several Bacillus species with closely related phylogeny. The most well-studied members of the group, B. anthracis, B. cereus, and B. thuringiensis, are known for their pathogenic potential. Here, we present the historical rationale for speciation and discuss shared and unique features of these bacteria. Aspects of cell morphology and physiology, and genome sequence similarity and gene synteny support close evolutionary relationships for these three species. For many strains, distinct differences in virulence factor synthesis provide facile means for species a

The ecology of plague (Yersinia pestis infection) in its ancient foci in Central Asia remains poorly understood. We present field data from two sites in Kazakhstan where the great gerbil (Rhombomys opimus) is the major natural host. Family groups inhabit and defend burrow systems spaced throughout the landscape, such that the host population may be considered a metapopulation, with each occupied burrow system a subpopulation. We examine plague transmission within and between family groups and its effect on survival. Transmission of plague occurred disproportionately within family groups althou

The immune defence of an organism is evolving continuously, causing counteradaptations in interacting species, which in turn affect other ecological and evolutionary processes. Until recently comparative studies of species interactions and immunity, combining information from both ecological and immunological fields, have been rare. The cellular immune defense in insects, mainly mediated by circulating hemocytes, has been studied primarily in Lepidoptera and Diptera, whereas corresponding information about coleopteran species is still scarce. In the study presented here, we used two closely re

The rhizosphere is a dynamic interface among plant roots, soil, and microbiota, where the resident microbial community shapes plant health, ecosystem resistance and resilience, nutrient cycling, and sustainable crop production. Yet the limited efficacy of conventional microbial inoculants under field conditions - reflecting poor persistence of introduced microorganisms, incomplete mechanistic understanding of plant-microbiome signalling, and high context-dependence across soils and climates - has created a need for predictive, rather than empirical, microbiome engineering. To close this gap, w

Understanding how reproductive barriers combine to restrict gene flow remains a central challenge in speciation research. Although reproductive isolation is inherently a composite process, most empirical studies have focused on individual barriers in isolation, limiting our ability to capture their joint effects, particularly in systems undergoing evolutionary transitions such as shifts in mating system. Here, we provide a comprehensive, life-cycle-wide quantification of reproductive isolation between two closely related species of the Erysimum incanum complex that differ markedly in mating sy

Specificity, the selective partnership between a host and particular microbial taxa, is a fundamental feature of microbial symbioses, yet the mechanisms that generate and maintain specificity can be difficult to disentangle across the evolutionary, ecological and molecular scales at which they operate. Binary symbioses, in which a single host and microbial species interact, offer powerful systems for investigating these mechanisms across biological scales. Here, current knowledge of the symbiosis between siphonfish in the genus Siphamia and their bioluminescent symbiont, Photobacterium mandapa

The interactions between bacterial pathogens, helminths, and commensal microbiota in the gut form a complex ecological network that profoundly impacts host immunity and health. Pathogens employ strategies such as type VI secretion systems (T6SS) and inflammation induction to evade colonization resistance, disrupt microbial balance, and establish self-benefit ecological niches. These interactions involve competition with commensal bacteria and helminths, which play a critical role in maintaining gut homeostasis by occupying ecological niches, competing for nutrient, and supporting the mucus bar

Polyethylene micro/nano plastics (PE-MPs, PE-NPs), being the predominant plastic pollutants in aquaculture environments, frequently coexist with emerging contaminants such as perfluorinated compounds (PFOA) within closed aquaculture systems. Nevertheless, the combined biotoxicological impacts and underlying mechanisms of PE-MPs, PE-NPs, and PFOA co-pollutants remain poorly understood in zebrafish. This study revealed induced oxidative stress in zebrafish, as evidenced by aberrant levels of antioxidant enzymes (CAT, SOD, GST) and lipid peroxidation markers (LPO, GSH) as well as neurotoxicity (A

Toxoplasma gondii is a major neglected parasitic infection occurring in settings of extreme poverty in Africa. Apart from causing reproductive failure in animals it is also a significant zoonotic concern. The objective of this study was to determine the seroprevalence and associated risk factors of T. gondii infection in cats, chickens, goats, sheep and pigs in the southeast of South Africa, of which little is known. Sera was obtained from 601 domestic animals including 109 cats, 137 chickens, 128 goats, 121 sheep and 106 pigs managed under different production systems in different agro-ecolog
