The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between intensity, noise duration and non-auditory effect represented by changes both in visual acuity and the near point of accommodation. Changes in vision efficiency determined by a black and white chess board were monitored during and after 1 h exposure to 4 levels of noise: 90 dB-A, 93 dB-A, 96 dB-A or 99 dB-A and 2 h exposure to 96 dB-A. Results indicated that vision impairment can be attributed to a complex relationship between the intensity and the duration of exposure to noise.

The potential use of polyisobutylcyanoacrylate nanoparticles in antiparasitic chemotherapy is described. The nanoparticles on their own proved to have trypanocidal activity against Trypanosoma brucei brucei in-vitro but not against Trichomonas vaginalis or Entamoeba histolytica. The trypanocidal activity was partly confirmed in-vivo with T. brucei-infected mice.

Nutritive sucking was studied in 18 preterm infants. Differences in feeding efficiency could not be explained by differences in sucking rate. Quick efficient drinking, however, was characterized by long sucking bursts and by a large amount of milk intake during each sucking movement. This paper describes a new, simple technique for instantaneously rating velopharyngeal competency during speech. The instrument, designed on the basis of data obtained from aerodynamic studies, provides an index of palatopharyngeal closure. Results from model studies and 75 cleft palate subjects demonstrate how the instrument is used to differentiate between problems related to velopharyngeal closure and those resulting from other variables which often influence the performance of speakers with cleft palate.

Two and three Dow Cordis Hollow Fiber and Gambro Lundia artificial kidneys were used for high efficiency dialysis in large patients, intoxications, and for rapid ultrafiltration. BUN clearances of up to 240 ml/min were achieved. One episode of severe neuropathy occurred during high efficiency dialysis, and hypotensive episodes were more common. High efficiency dialysis has certain indications particularly in intoxication cases. However, because of possible side effects more experience is needed before its ultimate place in the treatment of uremia can be ascertained.

We demonstrate a high-performance 660-nm vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) employing a strain-compensated GaInP/AlGaInP active region and an asymmetric AlGaAs distributed Bragg reflector (DBR). By engineering a -10 nm room-temperature spectral detuning (λgain - λcavity), we compensate for the differential thermal redshift between the gain peak (0.26 nm/K) and the cavity mode (0.035 nm/K). In an attempt to constrain rising health-care costs, third-party payers are currently encouraging psychiatrists and other physicians to focus on the financial aspects of their treatment approaches. This paper has attempted to address the impact of this cost-efficient attitude on our empathy and by tracking the evolution of our health-care-delivery system since the turn of the century. I have described three overlapping phases: the humanist, the scientific, and the current corporate phase, and emphasized the importance or trivialization of an empathic practice-style associated with each stage.
