A study on cyclist head injuries based on an electric-bicycle to car accident reconstruction.

OBJECTIVE: In China, the electric-bicycle (E-bike) has become one of the most common modes of travel. However, the safety of E-bike has not received sufficient attentions, especially in the area of protection of the cyclists' head. METHODS: In this study, an E-bike-to-car accident was reconstructed using MADYMO and LS-DYNA software and head injuries of the cyclist were analyzed. A multi-rigid body model in MADYMO and a head to windshield impact finite element (FE) model using LS-DYNA were separately developed to achieve objectives of the work. RESULTS: Kinematic responses of the cyclist were

Simulative investigation on head injuries of electric self-balancing scooter riders subject to ground impact.

The safety performance of an electric self-balancing scooter (ESS) has recently become a main concern in preventing its further wide application as a major candidate for green transportation. Scooter riders may suffer severe brain injuries in possible vehicle crash accidents not only from contact with a windshield or bonnet but also from secondary contact with the ground. In this paper, virtual vehicle-ESS crash scenarios combined with finite element (FE) car models and multi-body scooter/human models are set up. Post-impact kinematic gestures of scooter riders under various contact conditions

Visceral injuries, wound infection and sepsis following electrical injuries.

Visceral injuries, wound infection and sepsis were investigated in 226 inpatients who sustained electrical burns over a period of 15 years. Four patients who sustained thoracic and abdominal organ injuries were noted in this series. The patients had injuries of the small intestine, stomach, colon and the lung. All the patients received operative treatment. Two of them died of sepsis. Injuries to the internal organs should always be considered following high-voltage injuries, and they should be managed as early as possible. The data concerning wound infection and sepsis following electrical inj

Electric shock: Cardiac effects relative to non fatal injuries and post-mortem findings in fatal cases.

The documented cardiovascular effects of an electrical shock include acute myocardial necrosis, myocardial ischemia with or without necrosis, heart failure, arrhythmias, haemorrhagic pericarditis, acute hypertension with peripheral vasospasm and anomalous, non specific ECG alterations. Studies documenting the development of acute left ventricular failure and pulmonary oedema sustain that the observed ECG changes are secondary to myocardial injury. The cause of death of victims of instantly fatal electrical accidents is ventricular fibrillation, but it is not clear if this fibrillation is due t

Orthopedic Injuries Associated With Electric Scooter (E-scooter) Use: Epidemiology, Injury Patterns, Management Strategies, and Prevention.

Electric scooters have rapidly become a popular form of micromobility worldwide, offering convenience and affordability. However, their increasing use has been paralleled by a notable rise in emergency presentations, with orthopedic trauma representing a substantial proportion. Injuries often involve young adults, typically following falls, and are characterized by a high incidence of fractures, particularly of the upper limb. Importantly, a significant number of cases require operative management, including complex reconstructions for open or periarticular injuries. The injury spectrum extend

Road accidents in children involving light electric vehicles cause more severe injuries than other similar vehicles.

Road accidents in Israel were responsible for 23% of injuries in pediatric population between 2013 and 2017. In recent years, the massive entrance of e-bike and other light electric vehicles (called collectively LEV) into the roads is significantly changing the epidemiology of road accidents among children. The study aims to describe the causes, injury types, and other epidemiological characteristics of children injured in road accident and compare injuries of LEV to regular bicycles and other light non-electric vehicles (called collectively LNEV). This retrospective study included all referra

Electric or traumatic injury? The role of histopathological investigations.

Analysis of wounds is crucial in forensic medicine to prove how an injury was caused. In many cases, microscopic analysis may be decisive. It is often difficult to distinguish macroscopic skin lesions resulting from electrical, mechanical and from thermal trauma where these occur simultaneously and to formulate a correct differential diagnosis. We report two cases in which the injuries found on the bodies and the manner of death raised uncertainty. An autopsy was performed. External examination of the bodies showed skin injuries that needed histopathological analysis to reconstruct the dynamic

Low-voltage electricity-induced lung injury.

We report a case of bilateral pulmonary infiltrates and haemoptysis following low-voltage electricity exposure in an agricultural worker. A 58-year-old man standing in water reached for an electric watering machine and sustained an exposure to 220 V circuit for an uncertain duration. The electricity was turned off by another worker, and the patient was asymptomatic for the next 10 h until he developed haemoptysis. A chest radiograph demonstrated bilateral infiltrates, and chest computed tomography (CT) revealed ground-glass opacities with interstitial thickening. Evaluations, including electro
