Potential of electric stimulation for the management of COVID-19.

The COVID-19 pandemic is the most devastating health emergency that humans have seen over the past century. The war against the disease has been handicapped by unavailability of effective therapeutic options. Till date, there is no clinically approved vaccine or drug for the treatment of COVID-19, and the ongoing search to find a novel therapy is progressing at pandemic pace. Herein, we propose a novel hypothesis based on sound research evidence that electric stimulation can be a potential adjuvant to the currently used symptomatic therapies and antiviral drugs. Based on preclinical evidence, …

A mouse model of cochlear implantation with chronic electric stimulation.

OBJECTIVES: Cochlear implants provide an effective treatment option for those with severe hearing loss, including those with preserved low frequency hearing. However, certain issues can reduce implant efficacy including intracochlear tissue response and delayed loss of residual acoustic hearing. We describe a mouse model of cochlear implantation with chronic electric stimulation that can be used to study cochlear implant biology and related pathologies. METHODS: Twelve normal hearing adult CBA/J mice underwent unilateral cochlear implantation and were evenly divided into one group receiving e…

Transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS) for cancer pain in adults.

BACKGROUND: Cancer-related pain is complex and multi-dimensional but the mainstay of cancer pain management has predominantly used a biomedical approach. There is a need for non-pharmacological and innovative approaches. Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulation (TENS) may have a role in pain management but the effectiveness of TENS is currently unknown. This is an update of the original review published in Issue 3, 2008. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this systematic review was to determine the effectiveness of TENS for cancer-related pain in adults. SEARCH METHODS: The initial review searched The

Pedunculopontine nucleus electric stimulation alleviates akinesia independently of dopaminergic mechanisms.

The symptom of Parkinson's disease that is most disabling and difficult to treat is akinesia. We have previously shown that low-frequency stimulation of the pedunculopontine nucleus can alleviate such akinesia in a macaque rendered Parkinsonian using 1-methyl 4-phenyl 1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine. Here, we have extended that study to show that adding stimulation of the pedunculopontine nucleus to levodopa treatment in this Parkinsonian monkey increased its motor activity significantly more than levodopa alone. This additivity suggests that pedunculopontine nucleus stimulation may improve movemen

Wavelet transform for rabbit EEG with vagus nerve electric stimulation.

Vagus nerve electric stimulation is a new method for preventing and treating epilepsy, pain disorders and depression with a subcutaneous surgically implanted device. The mechanisms of action of implanted stimulation device are still unknown. And the vagus nerve electric stimulator has several operating and stimulation parameters with the programming wand or the magnet. We had finished designing a new vagus nerve electric stimulator for the epilepsy last year. In order to analysis and detect the effects on the brain characteristics with these operation and the electrical activation, the rabbits…

[Long-term clinical assessment of single-lead VDD electric stimulation].

BACKGROUND: During the last decade single lead VDD pacing has been progressively affirmed as an electrotherapy of choice in patients with advanced atrioventricular block without alterations of the sinus function. It combines the benefits of P-synchronous ventricular pacing with an easy implant procedure when compared to the conventional DDD approach. The aim of this study was to evaluate the validity of such an approach in a large population of patients, all implanted in a single center. METHODS: From 1987 up to now, 317 patients, all affected by advanced atrioventricular block and without si

Responses of isolated canine airways to electric stimulation and acetylcholine.

Contractility of tracheal smooth muscle strips and spiral strips of intrapulmonary airways 5 mm and 1.5 mm in diameter was studied in organ baths. Acetylcholine (ACh) sensitivity of canine airways closely resembled that of other species, and concentration-response curves for this drug were similar for all three preparations. Electric field stimulation (ES) elicited sustained contractions and, in contrast to guinea pig and human airways, never produced relaxations below the base line. Atropine antagonized the responses to both ES and exogenous ACh whereas tetrodotoxin abolished the response to

3D-printable stimulation electrodes to improve precision, reproducibility, and reliability of transcranial electric current stimulation.

OBJECTIVE: Transcranial electric stimulation (tES) refers to noninvasive neuromodulation techniques that apply a low-amplitude electric current through scalp electrodes to modulate brain activity. Conventional scalp electrodes are made of conductive rubber and are embedded in saline-soaked sponges, held in place using non-conductive rubber straps. Precisely positioning the electrodes at the desired location is challenging, and maintaining their position is equally difficult. In addition, as sponges are prone to drying out during prolonged use, they can compromise the electrode's conductivity a…

Head models of healthy and depressed adults for simulating the electric fields of non-invasive electric brain stimulation.

During the past decade, it became clear that the electric field elicited by non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) techniques such as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) are substantially influenced by variations in individual head and brain anatomy. In addition to structural variations in the healthy, several psychiatric disorders are characterized by anatomical alterations that are likely to further constrain the intracerebral effects of NIBS. Here, we present high-resolution realistic head models derived from structural magnetic resonanc

Cutaneous gastric electrical stimulation alters gastric motility in dogs: New option for gastric electrical stimulation?

BACKGROUND AND AIM: We investigated the effects of cutaneous gastric electrical stimulation (CGES) on gastric myoelectrical activity, postprandial antral contractions and gastric tone in dogs. METHODS: CGES was carried out via abdominal surface electrodes over the stomach. After an overnight fast, gastric slow waves were recorded from the serosal electrodes in six dogs at a frequency of 4.4 cycles/min (c.p.m.) or 10 c.p.m. Nine dogs were used for the measurement of postprandial antral contractions. Gastric tone at baseline and during CGES was measured in six of the dogs. RESULTS: We found th

Conditioning electrical stimulation is superior to postoperative electrical stimulation, resulting in enhanced nerve regeneration and functional recovery.

Postoperative electrical stimulation (PES) improves nerve regeneration by decreasing staggered regeneration at the coaptation site. By contrast, conditioning (preoperative) electrical stimulation (CES) accelerates axon extension. Given that both techniques can be delivered at the bedside, a direct comparison of outcomes is of significant clinical importance. In this study, we compared regeneration and reinnervation outcomes of CES, PES, a combination of CES and PES, and a no stimulation control. Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into i) CES, ii) PES, iii) CES + PES, and iv) no stimulat

Stimulation artifact source separation (SASS) for assessing electric brain oscillations during transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS).

Brain oscillations, e.g. measured by electro- or magnetoencephalography (EEG/MEG), are causally linked to brain functions that are fundamental for perception, cognition and learning. Recent advances in neurotechnology provide means to non-invasively target these oscillations using frequency-tuned amplitude-modulated transcranial alternating current stimulation (AM-tACS). However, online adaptation of stimulation parameters to ongoing brain oscillations remains an unsolved problem due to stimulation artifacts that impede such adaptation, particularly at the target frequency. Here, we introduce

Electrical stimulation for treating pressure ulcers.

BACKGROUND: Pressure ulcers (also known as pressure sores, decubitus ulcers or bedsores) are localised injuries to the skin or underlying tissue, or both. Pressure ulcers are a disabling consequence of immobility. Electrical stimulation (ES) is widely used for the treatment of pressure ulcers. However, it is not clear whether ES is effective. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effects (benefits and harms) of electrical stimulation (ES) for treating pressure ulcers. SEARCH METHODS: In July 2019 we searched the Cochrane Wounds Specialised Register; the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials

[Language mapping with direct electrical stimulation].

Language mapping with electrical stimulation in patients with lesions close to the language area aids surgery by identifying the language area in each individual. This method is quite important in a clinical setting, and is the most reliable for preventing persistent language deficits after resection. Furthermore, language mapping with electrical stimulation has revealed that the functional organization of the language area is more complex than previously suggested by functional MRI and other methods. The language-related sites where electrical stimulation induced abnormality during language t

Electrical stimulation for the suppression of pathological tremor.

Pathological tremor is manifested as an involuntary oscillation of one or more body parts. Tremor greatly decreases the quality of life and often prevents the patient from performing daily activities. We hypothesized that sensors-driven multichannel electrical stimulation could stabilize affected joints by activating the antagonistic muscles during involuntary activation of agonist muscles and vice versa (out-of-phase stimulation). Here, we present the new system (hardware and software) and the testing of its operation. The hardware consists of a multichannel stimulator and inertial sensors fo
