[Corneoretinal dystrophy (Bietti)-- Long-term course of one patient over a period of 30 years, and interindividual variability of clinical and electrophysiological findings in two patients].

BACKGROUND: A tapetoretinal dystrophy with crystalline deposits of the retina and limbal cornea was described by Bietti in 1937. To date, only a few cases with long-term follow up have been reported. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Two patients are presented including the clinical findings, fluorescein angiography, electrophysiology [electroretinography (ERG); electrooculography (EOG), multifocal electroretinography (MERG)], adaptometry, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of peripheral blood lymphocytes. The clinical findings were at least in part documented over a period of 30 years. RESULTS:…

Slow saccades and other eye movement disorders in spinocerebellar atrophy type 1.

In order to study the relation between genotype and phenotype, a detailed study of the course of oculomotor deficits was performed in three patients with autosomal-dominant cerebellar ataxia, subtype spinocerebellar atrophy type 1 (SCA 1) using clinical testing and electrooculography. DNA analysis revealed a CAG repeat expansion of 65 in the SCA 1 gene on chromosome 6p in all patients. A progressive disorder of the saccadic system became obvious, leading to a marked slowing of saccadic eye movements and loss of pathological and physiological nystagmus. An upward gaze palsy developed early, fol…

The REM-sleep-related characteristics of narcolepsy: a nation-wide multicenter study in Turkey, the REMCON study.

INTRODUCTION: Narcolepsy type 1 (NT1) is caused by hypocretin deficiency, the pathophysiology of narcolepsy type 2 (NT2) has not been deline … shorter in patients with NT1 compared to those with NT2 (P < 0.001). The total duration of REMs on electrooculography recordings was also significantly higher in patients with RSWA in comparison with the patients without RSWA (P = 0.002). Total duration of REMs was significantly and positively correlated with the duration of RSWA on chin-EMG and leg-EMG recordings …

Effect of uvulonodular lesions on optokinetic nystagmus and optokinetic after-nystagmus in cats.

To investigate the effect of uvulonodular lesions on horizontal optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) and optokinetic after-nystagmus (OKAN), 6 cats were tested before and after lesions made by ablation under anesthesia. In the 3 cats with only uvular lesion, the initial slow phase velocity and the time constant of OKAN were unchanged. In the remaining three cats whose lesions included not only the uvula but also the nodulus, the time constant of OKAN was markedly prolonged, and the initial OKAN velocity was not affected. The postoperative average time constant of OKAN increased from normal value of 9 s

Saccade metrics in multiple sclerosis: versional velocity disconjugacy as the best clue?

We studied the parameters (latency, amplitude, peak velocity) of horizontal saccades in 32 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and 20 healthy, age matched control subjects. Saccades were recorded by direct-current electro-oculography technique (EOG). The patients were divided in 2 groups according to the absence or the presence of clinical internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO). In both groups, we found increased latency, hypometria and reduced velocity. The disconjugacy of saccades was measured by calculating the ratio of abduction and adduction peak velocities (the versional disconjugacy index

The Effects of Constraining Head Rotation on Eye and Whole-Body Coordination During Standing Turns at Different Speeds.

A limitation of the ability to rotate the head with respect to the upper body has been associated with turning problems; however, the extent of head constraints on whole-body coordination has not been fully determined. The aim of this study was to limit head on body rotation and observe the effects on whole-body coordination during standing turns at various speeds. Twelve participants completed standing turns at 180°. A Vicon motion system and a BlueGain Electrooculography system were used to record movement kinematics and measure horizontal eye movements, respectively. All participants were t…

[Oculographic findings in 145 patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo].

OBJECTIVE: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) can be produced by specific manoeuvres and be studied by electrooculography (EOG). It allows an exhaustive study of features in the positional nystagmus. Although most of the patients with BPPV express typical nystagmus, there exists a group of them that exhibit a non typical form. In this work, a comparative study was carried out between two groups of patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We have studied retrospectively 145 patients with BPPV and Dix-Hallpicke (D-H) positive manoeuvre registered by EOG techniques. All patients were explored in…

Neuroradiological and eye movement correlates in children with intermittent saccade failure: "ocular motor apraxia".

Ocular motor apraxia (OMA) is a clinical sign involving the intermittent inability to initiate saccades, and a failure of quick phases during optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) and vestibular nystagmus (VN). Some patients have no other associated abnormalities (idiopathic), whereas others have a variety of neurological conditions. We quantified the severity of the saccade failure and correlated it with neuro-radiological and other oculomotor findings in 62 children (aged 17 days - 14 years). Saccades, smooth pursuit, OKN and VN were recorded using electrooculography and the extent of "locking up" (ab…

A long-term follow-up of metallic intraocular foreign bodies, employing diagnostic x-ray spectrometry.

We describe 10 eyes harboring metallic intraocular foreign bodies (IOFBs) for 9 to 46 years that had undergone diagnostic x-ray spectrometry to measure metal dissolution 9 years before this study. Findings from the present clinical and laboratory examinations, including perimetry, electroretinography, electrooculography, and diagnostic x-ray spectrometry examinations are reported. Deterioration in visual acuity consequent to metal dissolution of the IOFB was found in only one eye. Visual fields and electrophysiologic performances deteriorated in two other eyes for reasons that were probably un…

Noninvasive Intelligent Brain-Metasurface System for Real-Time Electromagnetic Wave Manipulation.

A noninvasive intelligent brain-computer interface (BCI) is integrated with a reconfigurable metasurface to establish a direct neural-to-electromagnetic transduction pathway for real-time, multimodal wave control. By combining convolutional-neural-network-based decoding of motor-imagery electroencephalography (EEG) signals with threshold-based recognition of electrooculography (EOG) commands, the proposed system converts neural and ocular activities into high-speed control commands, which are subsequently implemented through an FPGA-driven dual-polarized reconfigurable metasurface for real-tim…

MTGNet: a task-oriented and spectrally guided framework for EEG denoising.

Objective.Electroencephalography (EEG) is widely used in brain-computer interfaces, but its microvolt-level signals are easily contaminated by electromyography (EMG), electrooculography (EOG), and mixed physiological artifacts. This study develops an EEG denoising framework that suppresses artifacts while preserving information used by downstream biomedical artificial intelligence tasks.Approach.We propose MTGNet, a task-oriented and spectrally guided EEG denoising framework. MTGNet combines low-rank adaptation (LoRA)-based task-aware consistency regularization, a spectrally aware Guidance Net…
