Neurovascular coupling in the basolateral amygdala modulates negative emotions.

Emotion induces changes in regional cerebral blood flow, a manifestation of neurovascular coupling (NVC). However, whether NVC provides feedback to actively modulate emotion remains unexplored. Here, we demonstrate that NVC actively and bidirectionally modulates stress-induced negative emotions. We established bidirectional manipulations of NVC in freely moving mice by employing integrated pharmacological, genetic, and arteriolar optogenetic approaches. Our results showed that both systemic and region-specific NVC deficiencies in the basolateral amygdala (BLA) heightened emotional responses wh…

Neural mechanisms underlying decisions to express or suppress emotions.

Emotional expressions play a central role in social communication. The dominant view assumes that emotional expression is a spontaneous consequence of affect. In everyday social life, however, individuals often suppress internally generated emotions. Here, we investigated the behavioral and neural mechanisms underlying decisions about emotional expression, based on the view that emotional expression constitutes a form of decision-making involving evaluation of social context, anticipation of interpersonal consequences, and consideration of social norms. Using functional magnetic resonance imag…

Safety behaviors and positive emotions in social anxiety disorder.

The present study examined contextual factors that affect safety behavior use as well as positive emotions when using safety behaviors among individuals with SAD. Eighty-eight participants took part in the study, half (n = 44) met diagnostic criteria for SAD and half (n = 44) did not meet criteria for SAD. Participants completed a 21-day experience sampling methodology (ESM) measurement in which they reported on daily social interactions, safety behavior use, and emotions. Using multilevel linear modeling we found that both individuals with and without SAD used more safety behaviors when inter…

Emerging adults' emotions toward their siblings with down syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Typically-developing siblings of individuals with Down Syndrome often experience complex emotions towards their sibling. This study explored how social support, personal resources (optimism, sense of coherence [SOC]), and individual variables (sex, religious affiliation, siblings' functionality) may impact emerging adult siblings' emotions toward their sibling with Down Syndrome. METHODS: Participants were 292 siblings of individuals with DS ranging in age from 18-27 (M=21.54, SD=2.50). Participants completed self-report questionnaires exploring optimism, SOC, support, and accepta…

Causation in cerebral palsy: Parental beliefs and associated emotions.

AIM: To better understand parents' beliefs about causation in cerebral palsy (CP) and the emotions related to those beliefs. METHOD: We surveyed 226 parents of children with CP aged 1 to 18 years, recruited from the Victorian Cerebral Palsy Register, to evaluate their beliefs about the causes of CP, including genetic causes, causes specific to their own child, and their attitudes and emotions in relation to these. RESULTS: Although 92% of participants reported that understanding the causes of their child's CP was important, uncertainty about the cause was expressed by 13%. The most frequentl…

Altered brain responses to specific negative emotions in schizophrenia.

Deficits in emotion processing are a core feature of schizophrenia, but their neurobiological bases are poorly understood. Previous research … that schizophrenia is characterized by hyper-responsivity to stimuli evoking high-arousal, negative emotions, and a bias towards fear in emotion recognition.

Punishment and Precious Emotions: A Hope Standard for Punishment.

Each year, hundreds of people in high-income countries take their own lives while they are in prison. Thousands engage in self-harm and thousands abuse other prisoners. Such behaviours often correlate with mental health problems, but they are also often pleas for help and for hope. Some courts have invoked the ideas of hope and the right to hope in the context of life imprisonment, but they have neither subjected the concept of hope to sustained analysis nor specified the role that hope should play in our practices of lawful punishment overall. This article offers a preliminary investigation o

Children's Anxious Characteristics Predict how their Parents Socialize Emotions.

Emotion socialization by parents contributes to children's trajectories of healthy and unhealthy emotional development, but there has been l … ers. Basal RSA moderated the stability of fathers' punitive responses to children's anxious and sad emotions, and directly predicted changes in mothers' neglect of children's anxious and sad emotions, and negative and positive feelings about children's social withdrawal. These effects of children's characteristics on parents' emotions and behaviors support …

Cognitive functions, emotions and personality in woman with fibromyalgia.

Background: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue and cognitive difficulties. A person with FM suffers from pain diffused throughout the body, and accompanied by the feeling of exhaustion and concentration problems, which often impede even simple tasks. Many studies have shown that people with FM suffer from cognitive disorders, including memory disorders. The aim of the study was to evaluate the relationship between fibromyalgia and cognitive functioning (direct memory, arbitrary attention, learning processes), emotional functi

Pathophysiology of language, speech and emotions in neurodegenerative disease.

Studying neurodegenerative diseases has greatly expanded our knowledge of language, speech and emotion as these diseases can affect areas not typically seen with stroke or tumor. Newer imaging techniques such as voxel based morphometry), fluorodeoxyglucose (F18) positron emission tomography and functional magnetic resonance imaging have allowed localization of these deficits and a greater understanding of the language network targeted by these progressive neurodegenerative illnesses. This review illustrates these important points by describing five syndromes, using clinical cases and then noti

Emotions documented in clinical notes: An interpretative descriptive study.

CONTEXT: Hospitalized patients and their families often engage in difficult and emotionally charged conversations with clinicians about their values, goals, and care preferences when facing a serious illness. Understanding when these emotions are distressing for patients, families, and clinicians would enable opportunities for supportive care interventions. OBJECTIVE: To identify how, and in what context, clinicians document aspects of emotions in clinical notes of seriously ill patients. METHODS: Interpretive descriptive qualitative study of a random sample of clinical notes (n = 500) from …

An unexpected acoustic indicator of positive emotions in horses.

Indicators of positive emotions are still scarce and many proposed behavioural markers have proven ambiguous. Studies established a link between acoustic signals and emitter's internal state, but few related to positive emotions and still fewer considered non-vocal sounds. One of them, the snort, is shared by several perrisodactyls and has been associated to positive contexts in these species. We hypothesized that this could be also the case in horses. In this species, there is a clear need for a thorough description of non-vocal acoustic signals (snorts, snores or blows are often used interch…

Mixed Emotions: An Incentive Motivational Model of Sexual Deviance.

Sexual offending behavior is a complex and multifaceted phenomenon. Most existing etiological models describe sexual offending behavior as a variant of offending behavior and mostly include factors referring to disinhibition and sexual deviance. In this article, we argue that there is additional value in describing sexual offending behavior as sexual behavior in terms of an incentive model of sexual motivation. The model describes sexual arousal as an emotion, triggered by a competent stimulus signaling potential reward, and comparable to other emotions coupled with strong bodily reactions. Co…
