Empowerment of Parents of Children With Craniosynostosis by Objective Scoring of Patient Information Websites.

INTRODUCTION: Parental anxiety may be caused by inappropriate information on the world wide web regarding craniosynostosis. The aim of this study was to study the correlation between the first 100 websites ranked on the Google search engine and those ranked based on objective scoring with patient information scoring tool. The results of these findings can then be used to recommend websites based on the quality of information that may not initially appear first on a search engine. METHODS: The DISCERN patient information scoring tool was chosen as a scientific way of measuring the quality of p

Patterns of runaway behavior within a larger systems context: the road to empowerment.

Runaway behavior is a common problem in residential treatment settings for youth. This paper looked at Orten and Soll's runaway typology and Homer's conceptualization of runaways as "running from" or "running to" something and expanded the context to include interactions with family and professionals. A case study and a survey of nine adolescent runaways from a residential setting were used to explore several hypotheses. A discussion of the results and practical applications illustrated ways to empower therapists and other professionals to deal with runaways more effectively.

Empowerment trajectories in patients with chronic heart failure: a descriptive correlational study.

AIMS: Patient empowerment is a key factor in the management of chronic heart failure (HF), as it enables individuals to better understand and manage their condition, improve outcomes, and reduce the risk of decompensation. This study aims to identify predictors of baseline empowerment and its changes (improvement or deterioration) in patients with HF. Examining empowerment trajectories can help identify patients at risk of deterioration and support the design of tailored interventions. METHODS AND RESULTS: Sociodemographic, clinical, psychosocial, HRQoL, self-care, and empowerment questionnai…

Mental health in asylum-seeking parents: Dynamics of fragmentation, resilience, and empowerment.

Asylum-seeking populations face a disproportionate burden of adverse mental health outcomes, yet empirical evidence on the factors that promote resilience and empowerment within these communities remain limited. This exploratory qualitative study examined the lived experiences of asylum-seeking parents through the lens of the family resilience model. Semistructured, in-depth interviews were conducted with 13 low-income Eritrean asylum-seeking parents in Israel, aged 25-40, most of whom resided in two-parent households. Data were analyzed, and themes were derived inductively using constructivis…

Domains of Family Empowerment for Self-Management in Palliative Care: A Scoping Review.

ObjectiveIn addition to the limited availability of formal palliative care services, which often leads family members to assume primary caregiving roles, family members are also integral partners in the care of patients with serious illness. Empowering family caregivers is essential to strengthen their capacity to provide care; however, evidence mapping the domains of family empowerment remains limited. This review aims to identify and map the domains of family empowerment for self-management in palliative care.MethodsThis scoping review followed the Arksey and O'Malley framework and was repor…

Parent-to-Parent Communication for Parent Empowerment in the Management of Their Hospitalized Child's Pain.

This study builds on previous research, which identified the need for a collaborative approach to managing children's acute pain, focused on empowering parents to be effectively involved. DESIGN: This study used a participatory qualitative approach. METHODS: Semi-structured online interviews were carried out by two researchers using four practice-based vignettes created with an expert pain nurse. The interviews elicited the views of eight parents on best practi

WOMEN'S EMPOWERMENT AND INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE IN BANGLADESH: INVESTIGATING THE COMPLEX RELATIONSHIP.

The aim of this study was to assess whether women's empowerment ensures reduced intimate partner violence (IPV). The differential relationship between women's empowerment and IPV among married women in Bangladesh was investigated using 2007 Demographic and Health Survey data. Logistic regression models were used to assess whether women's empowerment had any influence on their likelihood of experiencing IPV while controlling for other covariates. The analyses revealed that older cohorts of women, who were more empowered, were more vulnerable to physical violence than less-empowered, younger wom…

Hymen reconstruction as pragmatic empowerment? Results of a qualitative study from Tunisia.

Hymen reconstruction surgery (HR), while ethically controversial, is now available in many countries. Little clinical evidence and hardly any surgical standards support the intervention. Nearly as scarce is social science research exploring women's motivations for the intervention, and health care professionals' justifications for its provision. In order to better understand decision-making processes, we conducted semi-structured interviews in metropolitan Tunis, in 2009, with six women seeking the procedure, four friends who supported such women, four physicians who perform the operation, and

The patient's view of recovery: an emerging tool for empowerment through self-knowledge.

PURPOSE: To introduce Recovery Preference Exploration (RPE) as a new technique for studying the personal significance of being able to perform one type of functional activity over others. To determine if patients' concepts of function reflect the ADL, sphincter management, mobility and cognition (ASMC) domains established through the factor analyses of observed patient performance. METHODS: RPE involves an adapted card sort procedure. Patients sorted 18 cards each listing a single functional skill such as eating, walking, and memory into subjectively meaningful groups of activities based on h

Reading and reforming breast self-examination discourse: claiming missed opportunities for empowerment.

For close to 45 years breast self-examination (BSE) has had nearly uncontested support as depicted in mass media accounts. Just recently, however, a number of breast cancer activists have spoken out against the practice. They claim that BSE is oppressive and fosters victim blaming, which simply is not in the best interests of women. Judging by the media reports I reviewed, these activists may have a valid point. The discourse of the popular media articles that constitutes the issue of BSE for the average woman blames women for not doing their part to reduce high breast cancer mortality statist
