INTRODUCTION: The utility of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) decompression for inoperable malignant bowel obstruction is well documented. However, there are limited data on decompressive PEG for prolonged ileus, gut dysmotility, and/or complicated nonmalignant bowel obstruction. AIM: To evaluate the diagnostic value of endoscopy in patients with gastrointestinal graft-versus-host disease (GI GVHD).
METHODS: We identified 8 patients with GI GVHD following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell trans-plantation (HSCT). GVHD was defined histologically as the presence of gland apoptosis, not explained by other inflammatory or infectious etiologies.

Endoscopic ultrasonography provides detailed images of gastrointestinal structures by means of high frequency ultrasound transducers placed within the gastrointestinal tract. In this paper, the authors describe various systems and discuss their clinical potential and indications for use. Endoscopic ultrasonography allows imaging of various small pathological lesions in the visceral wall and adjacent structures, such as the mediastinum, pancreas and distal parts of the bile duct. Experience in endoscopy and ultrasonography is necessary for a proper management of the technique.

To determine the scope of gastrointestinal complications in heart transplant recipients, we examined the frequency and nature of gastrointestinal complications by reviewing the indications and findings of endoscopic and surgical procedures involving the gastrointestinal tract in 159 patients. All patients were treated with prednisone, azathioprine, and cyclosporine after transplantation. Forty-two children with ingestion of foreign bodies (FB) were managed conservatively. Thirty one (74%) of them were under 5 years of age. At presentation history revealed accidental ingestion in 95% and of being put in the oral cavity by elder sibs in 5% patients. Fifty seven per cent had respiratory distress, 38% had dysphagia and 12% had hematemesis. Between 1983 and 1986 thirty-seven patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding or stigmata of acute bleeding were treated at the Second Department of Surgery with endoscopic laser therapy. Materials were 174 cases of gastric cancer, 15 cases of myogenic tumor, 22 cases of gastric malignant lymphoma and 37 cases of colon cancer.
