Whatever the changes that are made to the mathematics curriculum in England, there will always remain a problem with mathematics anxiety. Maths anxiety is rarely facilitative. This study examined aspects of mathematics in secondary schools and how students rated them as sources of anxiety. This study reviews hand surgical activity and the resources available for provision of hand surgery in England in 2001. Operation rates for three common procedures, viz. carpal tunnel release, Dupuytren's surgery and ganglion surgery, were considered. The number of laboratory confirmed cases of meningococcal infection in England and Wales rose in 1995 for the first time since 1990. Culture confirmed cases rose to 1459, an increase of 29% over the 1994 total, due largely to increased disease activity in the last quarter of 1995. Reports of acute toxoplasmosis came mainly from southern England. The emergence of these diverse trends from apparently unchanging totals emphasises the importance of surveillance systems capable of discrimination.

Time series analysis has revealed two different patterns of smallpox epidemics in Britain in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries: in large conurbations (exemplified by London) the disease was endemic whereas medium-sized rural towns (exemplified by Penrith, Cumbria) suffered from 5 year epidemics with no cases of smallpox in the inter-epidemic years. There were fewer reports of cases of meningococcal infection in England and Wales during 1991 than in 1990. The number of isolates received at the Meningococcal Reference Laboratory decreased by 102 (7%), largely due to fewer strains being received from South West Thames, North East Thames and North Western regions. Group C infections showed a greater decrease than group B, with 16% fewer strains reported in 1991 than in 1990. Eight per cent of the strains received during 1991 showed reduced susceptibility to penicillin (MIC > 0.16mg/l).

Because iodine is added to cattle feed, milk and dairy products have become a major source of dietary iodine in Britain. The mean iodine concentrations of milk supplied to seven towns in England were measured each month throughout 1 year. Values were more than twice those recorded 20 years ago. A retrospective anatomical and family study was made of 345 patients with oesophageal atresia who were born in the South West of England between 1942 and 1973. There were 186 males and 159 females. Twenty-one cases were stillborn. Eighty-five percent of the patients had a combination of oesophageal atresia with a tracheo-oesophageal fistula to the distal oesophageal segment, and 9 percent had atresia without a fistula.
