HIV Epidemics - Current Burden and Future Prospects.

The latest estimate from the WHO is of nearly 37 million people living with HIV worldwide by the end of 2016. Roughly 20 million are receivi … lly among MSM. Altogether, the updated figures from WHO and UNAIDS on the current status of the HIV epidemics suggest that a plateau may have been reached. Thereby, major efforts will be further required to envision a HIV/AIDS-free world. Major gaps still exist in access to antiretroviral therapy, diagnosis of people unaware of their infection, education on …

Colliding Epidemics and the Rise of Cryptococcosis.

Discovered more than 100 years ago as a human pathogen, the Cryptococcus neoformans-Cryptococcus gattii (C. neoformans-C. gattii) complex ha … nada, and the Pacific Northwest of the United States since 1999. Here we describe how the colliding epidemics of HIV, transplantation and immunologics, climate change and migration have contributed to the rise of cryptococcosis.

[Notes about other epidemics in Colonial Chile].

In chronicles or in the historiography of the Colony in Chile there are few references about epidemics different to smallpox; like typhus, typhoid fever, dysentery, etc. Almost all, fast spreading in the country and some with high lethality, which led to overflowing the capacity of hospitals in the Chilean colonial period.

Ebola revisited: lessons in managing global epidemics.

The latest statistics for the number of new cases of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in West Africa point to the near containment of the virus. Wh … as highlights fresh perspectives from healthcare workers in the field for the management of similar epidemics.

Negligible risk for epidemics after geophysical disasters.

After geophysical disasters (i.e., earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis), media reports almost always stress the risk for epidemics; whether this risk is genuine has been debated. We analyzed the medical literature and data from humanitarian agencies and the World Health Organization from 1985 to 2004. Of >600 geophysical disasters recorded, we found only 3 reported outbreaks related to these disasters: 1 of measles after the eruption of Pinatubo in Philippines, 1 of coccidioidomycosis after an earthquake in California, and 1 of Plasmodium vivax malaria in Costa Rica related to an earthqu…

Convulsive ergotism: epidemics of the serotonin syndrome?

Between 1085 and 1927, epidemics of "convulsive ergotism" were widespread east of the Rhine in Europe due to consumption of grain contaminated with ergot, which is produced by the fungus Claviceps purpurea. West of the Rhine, consumption of ergot-contaminated food caused epidemics of gangrenous ergotism. The clinical features of convulsive ergotism--muscle twitching and spasms, changes in mental state, hallucinations, sweating, and fever lasting for several weeks--suggest serotonergic overstimulation of the CNS (ie, the serotonin syndrome). The ergot alkaloids are serotonin agonists. Dihydroer…

On the critical behaviour of simple epidemics.

We show how ideas and models which were originally introduced to gain an understanding of critical phenomena can be used to interpret the dynamics of epidemics of communicable disease in real populations. Specifically, we present an analysis of the dynamics of disease outbreaks for three common communicable infections from a small isolated island population. The strongly fluctuating nature of the temporal incidence of disease is captured by the model, and comparisons between exponents calculated from the data and from simulations are made. A forest-fire model with sparks is used to classify th…

The intrinsic transmission dynamics of tuberculosis epidemics.

In developed countries the major tuberculosis epidemics declined long before the disease became curable in the 1940s. We present a theoretical framework for assessing the intrinsic transmission dynamics of tuberculosis. We demonstrate that it takes one to several hundred years for a tuberculosis epidemic to rise, fall and reach a stable endemic level. Our results suggest that some of the decline of tuberculosis is simply due to the natural behaviour of an epidemic. Although other factors must also have contributed to the decline, these causal factors were constrained to operate within the slow…

[Effect of major epidemics on cultural awareness].

Mankind has been stricken with "major" epidemic diseases throughout its history. The most serious among them immediately threaten man's life e.g. plague, cholera, smallpox, typhus, and dysentery, besides, there are others which take a slower course e.g. lues, leprosy, leishmaniasis, tuberculosis, and malaria. Yet, the "lesser" epidemic diseases like diphtheria, scarlet fever, mumps, pneumococcosis, influenza, and most recently AIDS may also turn into "major" ones. Originally, man exclusively depended on his genetic makeup for protection, and being particularly prone to attacks of disease he wa

[Cryptosporidiosis in children: epidemics and sporadic cases].

From April 16 1987 through May 16 1987, during an outbreak of gastroenteritis, stool specimens were obtained from 53 children aged 18 to 36 months among the 90 children attending an on-site day-care center for the staff of a large teaching hospital in the Paris urban area (59%). Oocysts of Cryptosporidium were found in 11 specimens (21%) using an auramine staining technique. Children with diarrhea were more likely to have stools containing Cryptosporidium (p less than 0.01). Subsequently, a prospective study was carried out in the same day care center from July 1987 through January 1988. Among

[Plague epidemics in Bergen and population crises].

Ten epidemics of plague are known to have occurred in Bergen, Norway, from the Black Death in 1349 to the last epidemic in 1637. Seven of them took place after 1530, and the primary sources of only three are known from the first 180 years of the plague period. Therefore, additional epidemics have probably occurred of which we have no knowledge. After the Black Death, bubonic plague probably hit Bergen, and the infection seems to have always been imported by ships, especially ships from Baltic cities. During the last five epidemics in Bergen 12,900-14,500 people died on plague in the course of …

Mycobacterium fortuitum epidemics after open-heart surgery.

We present the clinical and epidemiological features of Mycobacterium fortuitum epidemics involving 19 patients who underwent open-heart surgery. The source of the infection could not be identified. However, bone wax and homografts utilized at that time have been suspected. The infected patients responded poorly to antibiotic management and their courses in most cases were influenced beneficially by total sternectomy and transplantation of the omentum into the mediastinum. The emergence of M. fortuitum may represent an aggressive bacterial strain resistant to presently used broad-spectrum anti…
