Erythema multiforme in the esophagus.

Erythema multiforme is an immune-mediated mucocutaneous disorder. Mucosal involvement usually affects the oral region, the genitals or the eyes. We report a case of esophagitis caused by erythema multiforme in a patient diagnosed with lung cancer. Esophageal manifestation in erythema multiforme is rarely seen. Besides esophagitis it can lead to esophageal strictures. Erythema multiforme is mostly triggered by infection or drugs but the association with malignancy has been described.

[Erythema multiforme : target deciphering].

Erythema multiforme is an immune-mediated skin reaction characterized by target-shaped lesions. These lesions are described here and compared with their clinical mimickers. The condition is mainly secondary to an infection, typically Herpes simplex virus infection, and more rarely to medication, autoimmune disease, hematological neoplasia or radiation. Diagnosis is clinical. Due to its diverse manifestations, a skin biopsy and immunohistochemical analyses can confirm the condition and rule out differential diagnoses. Treatment is symptomatic and combined with management of the underlying cause…

Erythema multiforme in children.

QUESTION: Children who present with rashes with "target" lesions are frequently diagnosed with erythema multiforme (EM). This is a self-limiting condition in most children; how should primary care providers differentiate between this and urticaria or Stevens-Johnson syndrome, and what is the recommended course of treatment? ANSWER: While EM is common in children, urticaria is also very common and tends to be more "waxing and waning" compared with EM's fixed lesions. Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis are more severe and distinct conditions; they have much more substantial…

Postherpetic Nevocentric Erythema Multiforme.

A previously healthy 35-year-old Caucasian woman presented with abrupt onset of erythematous, mildly pruritic plaques surrounding the majority of the nevi present on her neck, chest, back, and upper and lower extremities. She denied history of any recent systemic illnesses and was not taking any medications. On further questioning, the patient reported a recent episode of recurrent herpes labialis 2 weeks prior. The patient has a Fitzpatrick type I skin type with more than 100 brown and reddish brown pigmented macules and papules over her entire body. Plaques ranged in size from 0.4 cm to 1.5

Ciprofloxacin-induced erythema multiforme.

Ciprofloxacin is one of the most commonly used antibacterial agents with relatively few side effects. Serious adverse reactions reported with ciprofloxacin are rare with an incidence of 0.6%. One of the side effects of ciprofloxacin is erythema multiforme (EM). EM is an acute, self -limiting mucocutaneous hypersensitivity syndrome. It exhibits a diverse etiology, often recurs, has unusual clinical features and is of uncertain etiopathogenesis. It usually exhibits a distinctive skin or mucosal lesions that are characterized by combination of bullae, papules, macules or ulcers. It is most probab…

Herpes associated erythema multiforme.

Erythema multiforme is an acute and a self-limiting mucocutaneous hypersensitivity reaction triggered by certain infections and medications. One of the most common predisposing factors for erythema multiforme is infection with herpes simplex virus. Herpes associated erythema multiforme (HAEM) is an acute exudative dermatic and mucosal disease caused by the infecting herpes simplex virus. It has recurrence and idiorestriction, characterized by increasing of CD4+T leukomonocyte. This article reports a case of HAEM in a 9-year-old girl, with a review of relevant literature, and discusses the path…
