Henrik Ibsen's An Enemy of the People (1882) dramatizes a physician's discovery that his town's spa waters are contaminated. His efforts to disclose this danger lead to a collapse of civic support, as the truth threatens the town's economic and political interests. Beyond being a literary classic, the play serves as a case study in the ethics of public health disclosure. This article places the drama in the context of nineteenth century medical history and explores why Dr. Stockmann fails to communicate the truth effectively. Drawing on virtue ethics, public health frameworks, and organization

Specialized hospital units recently created to house and maintain ventilator or other technology-dependent persons in the United States are new cultural forms that enable beings who are neither fully alive, biologically dead, nor "naturally" self-regulating, yet who are sustained by modern medical practices, to exist. These institutions both fabricate and complicate the persons who are patients there through surveillance and maintenance of their conditions. This article concerns the relationship of person to place when the consciousness of an individual, considered to be the essence of personh

Hyperparathyroidism is a common endocrine disorder that occurs secondary to abnormal parathyroid gland functioning. Depending on the type of hyperparathyroidism, surgical extirpation of hyperfunctioning parathyroid glands can be considered for disease cure. Intraoperative parathyroid hormone (IOPTH) monitoring improves outcomes in patients undergoing surgery for primary hyperparathyroidism, but studies are needed to characterize its institutional adoption and its role in surgery for secondary and tertiary hyperparathyroidism, as these entities can be difficult to cure. Hence, we will perform a

INTRODUCTION: Clinical research with remote monitoring technologies (RMTs) has multiple advantages over standard paper-pencil tests, but also raises several ethical concerns. While several studies have addressed the issue of governance of big data in clinical research from the legal or ethical perspectives, the viewpoint of local research ethics committee (REC) members is underrepresented in the current literature. The aim of this study is therefore to find which specific ethical challenges are raised by RECs in the context of a large European study on remote monitoring in all syndromic stages

Although there have been numerous studies, especially in the last few decades, on the impact of child sexual abuse (CSA) on adult survivors, there is a dearth of studies focusing on the ethical aspects of research in this area. Against this background, we reviewed the literature published between January 2000 and December 2016 on the reporting of ethical guidelines followed in research on adult survivors of CSA. We conducted a PubMed (MEDLINE) and Google Scholar search to find published research, using the keywords: "child sexual abuse", "adult survivors", "Исследование", "guidelines" and "ethics"

This article is meant to describe and analyze some of the ethical difficulties encountered in a pilot research on treatment decisions of patients with chronic viral hepatitis C infection in Romania. It departs from an overview of the main ethics codes, and it shows that social health research on patients falls in between institutional codes of ethics. Furthermore, the article moves on to analyze so-called "important moments" of empirical research, such as the implementation of the ethical protocol, dealing with informal payments and with information on shady actions, as well as requests of inf

Our study examines the perspectives of researchers and other research team members who conducted National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded studies about their use of a single institutional review board (sIRB) review and onboarding process. More than 84% (n = 639) of respondents agreed that NIH-sponsored multisite clinical trials benefit from sIRB use. A higher proportion of super-users (>10 studies) of an sIRB than moderate users (1-10 studies) described the onboarding process positively (n = 119, 56% vs. n = 225, 42%, p = .01) and found sIRBs to be more cost-effective than a site-specific mo

The ethical and legal governance of Animal-Assisted Interventions (AAIs) remains conceptually and normatively fragmented. Although animals engaged in therapeutic, educational, and assistive activities make valuable contributions to human well-being, they continue to be defined by law as property or welfare objects, despite their meaningful yet limited forms of relational participation within structured human-controlled environments. This perspective obscures their context-dependent responsiveness and their institutional embeddedness. The present paper addresses this gap by adopting a normative

INTRODUCTION: Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is a rare intractable disease without a fundamental treatment, presenting with severe photosensitivity, freckle-like pigmented and depigmented maculae and numerous skin cancers before the age of 10 years without strict sun protection. About 70% of the patients exhibit extremely severe sunburn reactions and most of them develop neurological symptoms, including sensorineural hearing impairment and progressive peripheral and central nervous disorders beginning from childhood ages. In the preclinical study, we found that N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine was eff

BACKGROUND: Cancer is one of the most critical and ethically challenging health issues worldwide. Providing end-of-life care to cancer patients often places health-care providers in morally complex situations, where professional duties, cultural expectations, and legal–religious mandates intersect. Despite growing global interest in end-of-life ethics, there is limited understanding of how these challenges are experienced in culturally specific contexts such as Iran. This study aimed to explore the ethical challenges faced by health-care providers caring for cancer patients during the end-of-l

BACKGROUND: Many multi-country COVID-19 clinical trials, including those for widely available repurposed drugs with strong safety profiles, were conceptualised quickly but were unable to influence clinical treatment guidelines. The Chloroquine/Hydroxychloroquine for the Prevention of COVID-19 (COPCOV) trial, a large multi-country clinical trial sponsored by the University of Oxford, sought to determine the efficacy of hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine as a prophylaxis for COVID-19 but faced approval delays and other bureaucratic challenges. Understanding the reasons for these delays will help

Institutional Ethics Committees are commonly available in hospitals with newborn intensive care units, and may serve as a valuable resource for staff and parents dealing with difficult ethical decisions. Many clinicians may be unaware of when the committee might be helpful, or how it functions. After a brief historical introduction, two cases are presented as illustrations of pediatric ethics committee function. The first involves consideration of cardiac surgery for an infant with ventricular septal defect and Trisomy 13. The second involves disagreement between staff and parents regarding po

INTRODUCTION: Colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence is increasing, and treating low rectal cancer poses challenges in balancing oncological control with functional preservation. While preoperative chemoradiotherapy (CRT) improves sphincter preservation, anastomotic leakage (AL) remains a major complication. This trial aims to compare the efficacy of modified pull-through procedure versus coloanal anastomosis (CAA) with temporary stoma in low rectal cancer patients following preoperative CRT.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This is a multicentre, assessor-blinded, randomised controlled trial. A total of 216

Body donation remains fundamental to anatomical education, supporting not only technical training but also the development of ethical awareness, empathy, and humanistic values among health professionals. In recent decades, the anatomical community has moved toward shared ethical standards centered on voluntary informed consent, transparency, and explicit recognition of donors. International consensus statements have promoted standardized acknowledgment practices, responsible stewardship of human remains, and the ethical use of body donor images. Across regions, sociocultural, religious, legal,

This study examines how ethical issues in palliative care are perceived and experienced by healthcare professionals and family caregivers in Türkiye. Using a phenomenological qualitative design, in-depth interviews were conducted with 12 healthcare professionals and 10 family caregivers. Thematic analysis revealed two key themes: "decision-making process" and "service process." While both groups shared similar ethical concerns, their priorities differed. Healthcare professionals emphasized institutional and professional challenges, whereas family caregivers focused on communication gaps, emoti

Uterus transplantation (UTx) became a clinical reality with the birth of the first baby in 2014. Following increased success, the procedure has now transitioned to clinical practice in many institutions throughout the world. With a rising number of donors, recipients, and babies born from this procedure, and with more institutions offering UTx, ethical challenges have evolved while novel aspects gained prominence. Here, the Ethics Committees of the International Uterus Transplantation Society, a section of The Transplantation Society, summarize current and future ethical challenges in UTx and

The South African National Health Research Ethics Council (NHREC) states in its 2024 Ethics Guidelines that human biological material (HBM) and data cannot be privately owned under South African law. This position conflicts with established legal principles, guidelines by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), and South African university policies, all of which support private ownership of HBM and data. Private ownership is not only legally sound but also ethically necessary, providing a framework for accountability, ensuring fair recognition of institutional contributions, an

Controlled organ donation after circulatory death (DCD) has recently been revived in the UK, as part of attempts to increase organ donation rates. The re-introduction of DCD has subsequently become the focus of bioethical controversy, since it necessitates intervening in the care of dying patients to obtain quality donor organs. Transplant policy responses to these concerns have generated new legal and ethical guidelines to address uncertainties around DCD, producing claims that the UK has overcome' the ethical challenge of DCD. In contrast, by drawing on Lynch's call to 'respecify' ethics, th
