A 10-year-old girl presented with facial asymmetry associated with bulging of the right fronto-orbital region with no symptoms. Computed tomography demonstrated enlargement of the right zygomatic, frontal, ethmoid, and sphenoid bones. Abnormal proliferation of the bone had obliterated the sphenoid, right frontal sinus, and right ethmoid sinuses. These radiological findings suggested right optic nerve compression due to fibrous dysplasia. Right optic canal decompression was performed. In preparation for recurrence, the resulting bone defect in the right orbital roof was reconstructed using the

A case of unilateral enophthalmos in a 1-year-old child is presented. This was caused by a meningoencephalocele that originated in the anterior cranial fossa and protruded into the orbit through a bony defect at the junction of the frontal and ethmoid bones at the site of the anterior ethmoid canal. This meningoencephalocele was reduced, and the dura was repaired with a temporalis fascia graft. A split calvarial bone graft was inserted into the floor of the orbit, and lateral canthal ligament elevation completed the operative correction.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to describe the incidence of the middle ethmoidal artery and its anatomical nuances via an endoscopic endonasal approach.
METHODS: A cadaveric study was performed on 22 adult specimens. First, a frontal sinusotomy and ethmoidectomy were performed via an endoscopic endonasal approach in order to fully expose the anterior skull base. Subsequently, the lamina papyracea and the bone of the canals covering the ethmoidal neurovascular bundles were removed to identify the anterior, middle, and posterior ethmoidal arteries. Presence, laterality, and location

A 17-month-old Holstein Friesian heifer was presented after one day with dysphagia, slight paralysis of the tongue and swelling of the eyeli … ity with sharp margins and a diameter of approximately 5 cm was seen. It was located ventral to the ethmoid bone with possible intraneurocranial origin. Rhinoscopically, a mass located distal to the ethmoid bone with an uneven, slightly reddish surface partly covered by purulent exudate was visualised. Post-mortem examination of the euthanized animal confirmed …

We report a case of a 17-year-old male who had hit the front of his head in a traffic accident. CT scan revealed contusional hemorrhage and pneumocephalus of the left frontal lobe 10 hours after the accident. A month later he complained of rhinorrhea and CT scan revealed intracerebral pneumocephalus. One day he complained of headache and began to vomit after he sneezed. CT scan revealed that the pneumocephalus had become worse and air had spread throughout the subarachnoid space. Bone CT scan revealed the air communicated from the frontal sinus to the intracerebral air cavity. 3D-CT scan revea

A cribriform plate, a perpendicular plate, and two lateral masses are major components of the ethmoid bone of mammals. Notwithstanding the noticeable bone, virtually sitting in the center of the skull, extensive modifications of the skull of modern cetaceans, especially odontocetes (toothed whales), and the lack of clarity as to what characteristics delimit each element of the ethmoid has made the problem of the nature of the cetacean ethmoid more complicated and elusive than in other, less modified mammals. Furthermore, contention as to whether a perpendicular plate of the ethmoid, or the mes…

Intracranial penetrating injury through the nose is rare. We present a case of a 79 year-old patient who had intracranial penetrating injury with a wooden object accompanied by massive bilateral pneumoencephaly with the presence of a foreign body in the ethmoid bone with fracture and displacement of crista galli. This is a hitherto unreported retained foreign body with fractured ethmoid resulting in bilateral pneumoencephaly.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the treatment of minor exophthalmos by enlargement of orbital volume through conjunctive approach.
METHODS: Through the conjunctive approach medial to the eye ball, the dissection was performed subperiosteally to expose the ethmoid bone at the medial orbital wall. The exposure bone was 2.5-3.0 cm in length and 2.0-2.5 cm in width. Then the ethmoid bone was fractured to enlarge the orbital volume. From June 2006 to April 2008, 3 cases were treated.
RESULTS: The patients recovered in a short time with no visible skin scar. The technique was mini-invasive, and didn't a…

A lateral fronto-ethmoidal approach simultaneously exposing the frontal sinus and the nasal fossae appears to be a necessity for the surgical treatment of fronto-ethmoidal pathology. It is possible to fashion an osteo-plastic flap in the fronto-naso-maxillary region. The technique of the approach is described. The operation leaves no ocular functional sequelae and the scar is minimal. Twenty one operations by fronto-nasal flap approach are described, 10 for benign tumours of the fronto-ethmoidal system and 11 with the aim of re-aerating the frontal sinus for cases of complicated or iatrogenic

Osteosarcomas of the craniofacial bones account for less than 10% of all osteosarcomas. Primary osteosarcomas of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinus are rare localization (0.5%-8.1% of osteosarcomas occur in this site). Accordingly, we report a case of osteosarcoma arising de novo from the ethmoid bone in a 46-year-old female. Initially, she presented with headache, bilateral epistaxis, and postnasal drip. Biopsy revealed an osteosarcoma ethmoidal. The patient was treated by a neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by surgical resection and radiotherapy.

This study investigated the incidence of orbital emphysema in patients with fractures of the ethmoidal cells or maxillary sinus. We noted that mucosal destruction is essential for orbital emphysema to occur. Computed tomographic examination and intraoperative studies of 58 patients with orbital bone fracture were performed with the patients divided into 2 groups according to the location of the fracture lines. The incidences of orbital emphysema and of intrasinus hematoma were significantly higher in the group with medial orbital bone fracture of ethmoidal cells than in the group with maxillar

Between 1985 and 1990, 15 ethmoid frontal mucoceles were collated. All our patients consulted us at the exteriorization stage. A CT-scan is the ideal examination, making it possible to assert the diagnosis and to individualize the bone destruction and the neighbouring tissue repression. Trans-ethmoid or trans-nasal marsupialization by an external or endonasal approach provided excellent results after a 1 to 5 year follow-up period.

OBJECTIVE: Infected mucocele of the paranasal sinuses can induce orbital infection, including orbital subperiosteal abscess, which may lead to life-threatening intracranial complications. Effective diagnosis is important, and treatment should be aggressive. This paper presents our experiences in endoscopic surgical management of orbital complications secondary to infected paranasal sinus mucoceles.
METHODS: From our retrospective review of the medical charts for 82 patients with 92 sides diagnosed with paranasal sinus mucoceles, we present 7 sides in 7 adult patients with orbital complication

This review suggests revisiting nose anatomy by considering the ethmoidal labyrinths as part of the olfactory nose and not as paranasal sinu … the partitioning between the olfactory cleft and the ethmoid labyrinth seems to be a consequence of ethmoid bone remodeling induced by the acquisition of an upright posture. The ethmoid bone is derived from the cartilaginous nasal capsule of primitive vertebrates and considered to be a highly conserved region among the bony elements of the skull base. It appea …

The modified Lynch operation (Neel-Lake) differs in several ways from the operation described by Lynch. The operation begins with an intranasal anterior ethmoidectomy. The agger nasi cells are removed by curetting forward between the frontal process of the maxilla and the septum. The middle turbinate, normal-appearing mucosa of the frontal-ethmoid complex, and frontal process of the superior maxilla are preserved. Bone removal is limited in most cases to the anterior floor of the frontal sinus, a portion of the lacrimal bone, and the bone over the anterior ethmoid cells. Another important diff
