[Evidence for the existence of chronic ethmoid-maxillary sinusitis in infants under 18 months of age].

Oto-rhino-laryngologists usually deny the existence of infant chronic ethmoido-maxillary sinusitis, generally agreeing that the earliest signs of pneumatization of the maxillary sinuses cannot be observed earlier than 18 months of age. Based upon ten cases we present evidence that this notion of "late sinusal pneumatization" should be re-examined, pneumatized maxillary sinuses being possible as early as 11 months of age. Thus, at that age, radiodiagnosed apneumatosis which is considered as physiological, may express various conditions, such as true anatomical apneumatosis, chronic glue sinusit

Extent of Endoscopic Sinus Surgery for Odontogenic Sinusitis of Endodontic Origin with Ethmoid and Frontal Sinus Involvement.

Background/Objectives: Odontogenic sinusitis (ODS) is the most common cause of unilateral maxillary sinus opacification. Initial treatment consists of intranasal steroids and antimicrobial therapy. In case of persistence of the disease, endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) is advised. It is still not clear what extension of ESS is required and whether frontal sinusotomy or ethmoidectomy is justified in ODS with frontal sinus involvement. Methods: Adult patients presented with uncomplicated recalcitrant bacterial ODS due to endodontic-related dental pathology were evaluated by an otolaryngologist and

The Bacteriology of Middle Meatus and Ethmoid Sinuses in Chronic Rhinosinusitis: Epidemiological Analysis and Surgical Impact.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to explore the difference between sinus bacteriology in chronic rhinosinusitis patients with and without nasal polyposis. We also analyzed the possible differences in culture results from swabs taken from the middle meatus versus the ethmoid sinus. METHODS: Retrospective chart review of adult chronic rhinosinusitis patient data from the year 2006 to 2020. Nasal swabs were taken under endoscopic guidance either intraoperatively from either the ethmoid sinus or middle meatus, or in the outpatient clinic from the middle meatus. The results were categorized b

Computed tomography analysis of the anterior ethmoid genu of the frontal recess in non-diseased sinuses.

OBJECTIVE: Knowledge of anatomical variations of the frontal recess and frontal sinus and recognition of endoscopic landmarks are vital for safe and effective endoscopic sinus surgery. This study revisited an anatomical landmark in the frontal recess that could serve as a guide to the frontal sinus. METHOD: Prevalence of the anterior ethmoid genu, its morphology and its relationship with the frontal sinus drainage pathway was assessed. Computed tomography scans with multiplanar reconstruction were used to study non-diseased sinonasal complexes. RESULTS: The anterior ethmoidal genu was presen

Frequency of the odontogenic maxillary sinusitis extended to the anterior ethmoid sinus and response to surgical treatment.

OBJECTIVES: Odontogenic sinusitis usually affects the maxillary sinus but may extend to the anterior ethmoid sinuses. The purpose of this st … d that 52.7% of odontogenic maxillary sinusitis spreads to anterior ethmoid, causing added anterior ethmoid sinusitis. We found that 92.3% of the odontogenic maxillary sinusitis (who underwent middle meatal antrostomy) and 96.5% of the odontogenic maxillary sinusitis extended to the anterior ethmoid (treated with middle meatal antrostomy and anterior ethmoidectomy) …

Radiographic density profiles link frontal and anterior ethmoid sinuses behavior in chronic rhinosinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) may occur through heterogeneous disease processes. It is possible that more than 1 inflammatory process underlies CRS in any given patient. If so, heterogeneity in processes may be a function of the spatial organization of the paranasal sinuses. Density characteristics of sinus opacities on computed tomography (CT) scans offer insight into the nature of sinus opacities and disease, in general, and may thus be used to detect spatial heterogeneity of sinus disease within a given patient. METHODS: The study was a retrospective chart review of CRS patients

Large concha bullosa mucopyocele replacing the anterior ethmoid sinuses and contiguous with the frontal sinus.

Concha bullosa, a pneumatized middle turbinate, is a common anatomic variant found in the paranasal sinuses. When a concha bullosa becomes obstructed, it can form a mucocele and, eventually, a mucopyocele if it becomes secondarily infected. This is a rare phenomenon; only 9 concha bullosa mucopyoceles have been previously reported in the English-language literature. We present the case of a large concha bullosa mucopyocele in a pediatric patient in which the concha bullosa replaced the anterior ethmoid sinuses and was contiguous with the frontal sinus.

The treatment of chronic sinusitis in six cats by ethmoid conchal curettage and autogenous fat graft sinus ablation.

Six cats with chronic recurrent rhinitis and frontal sinusitis were treated by surgical ablation of their frontal sinuses by the implantation of autogenous fat grafts and curettage of the remaining ethmoid conchae. Deep nasal bacterial cultures and skull radiographs were performed before surgery. Excellent results were achieved in four of six cats and there was significant improvement in two of six cats. Median follow-up time was 15 months. Subcutaneous emphysema over the temporal area was managed by needle aspiration and bandaging. Frontal sinus ablation with autogenous fat graft in combinati

Computed Tomographic Comparison of Length, Width and Angulation of Ethmoidal Infundibulum in Patients With and Without Maxillary Sinusitis.

Ethmoidal infundibulum (EI) is an important part of the osteomeatal complex, which provides the main pathway for the maxillary sinus drainage. This study aimed to compare the length, width, and angulation of EI in patients with/without maxillary sinusitis using computed tomography (CT). This cross-sectional study evaluated 818 spiral CT scans of patients with/without maxillary sinusitis (n = 409 maxillary sinuses in each group) classified according to the clinical symptoms and the Lund-Mackay score for mucosal thickening. The degree of mucosal thickening (on axial and coronal sections), anatom

A juxta-ethmoidal course of the infraorbital canal in cases with large ethmomaxillary sinuses or giant Haller cells.

Ethmomaxillary sinuses (EMSs) and infraorbital Haller's cells (HCs) are rare anatomical variations that can impact sinus surgery. Two such rare variants are presented here. Archived computed tomography angiography (CTA) scans were retrospectively analysed. Two cases with an ethmoidal origin of an intramaxillary additional pneumatisation above hypoplastic maxillary sinuses (MSs) were found and examined. In the first case, bilateral EMSs were anterior to the pterygopalatine fossa, transforming the inferior orbital fissure into an ethmomaxillary fissure. Each EMS drained into the superior nasal m
