Trihalomethanes such as chloroform and bromoform, although well-known as a prominent class of disinfection by-products, are ubiquitously distributed in the environment due to widespread industrial usage in the past decades. Solutions of the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, [C(2)mim]Cl, which contain both Cu(+) and Cu(2+) ions, show current oscillations during potentiostatic polarization. A penta-ethyl ester prodrug of the radionuclide decorporation agent diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA), which exists as an oily liquid, was encapsulated in alginate beads by the ionotropic gelation method. An optimal formulation was found by varying initial concentrations of DTPA penta-ethyl ester, alginate polymer, Tween 80 surfactant and calcium chloride. We present a four-year-old girl with a doubly rare form of granuloma annulare with non-typical localisation of superficial nodules on the palms and predisposition to ulceration which is very rare in this type of superficial nodules. The diagnosis was proved by histological examination. After the local cryotherapy (ethyl chloride) the lesions almost completely disappeared.

The causative agent of thimerosal allergy (sodium ethylmercury thiosalicylate) has not previously been thoroughly investigated. To evaluate whether the organic mercury component or the thiosalicylic acid molecule induces thimerosal sensitization, 23 patients positive to thimerosal were patch tested with ethylmercuric chloride, thiosalicylic acid and 8 different derivatives of mercury. This systematic investigation examines gas transport in the lung for two sets of chlorohydrocarbons (CHCs): the chloromethanes (C1) and chloroethanes (C2). The C1 series includes chloromethane, methylene chloride, chloroform, and carbon tetrachloride, and the C2 series includes chloroethane, 1,2-dichloroethane, 1, 1, 2-trichloroethane, and 1, 1, 2, 2-tetrachloroethane. Chlorinated ethylenes are activated in mammalian metabolism to oxiranes. Only those with asymmetric chlorine substitution are mutagenic (trichloroethylene, vinylidence chloride and vinyl chloride) whilst the symetric molecules (tetrachloroethylene, cis- and trans-1.2-dichloroethylene) are inactive in this respect. Thus, stability of the oxirances (higher in the symmetric molecules, lower in the asymmetric ones) seems to be the important feature for the mutagenic, and possibly carcinogenic potential.

BACKGROUND: Neuropathy due to ulnar nerve compression at the elbow level is the second most frequent neuropathy. The scratch collapse test is useful to diagnose compression neuropathies. This test helps us rank compression sites and decide the type of treatment to use.
