Brain stem auditory-evoked potentials of mice with experimental allergic encephalomyelitis.

Experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) is an experimental model for multiple sclerosis. In order to study autoimmune retrocochlear hearing loss, we performed brain stem auditory-evoked potential (BAEP) studies on EAE mice. The EAE was induced in B10.PL and (PL/J x SJL)F1 mice. In the BAEP study, all of the peak and interpeak latencies were prolonged significantly in the diseased mice. Hearing thresholds were slightly elevated in the immunized mice during the acute phase. Inflammatory and phagocytic cell infiltration, demyelination, and V beta 8.1, 8.2 T-cell receptor-positive cells were

Abnormal brainstem auditory evoked potentials and neuropathology in "locked-in" syndrome.

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were studied in a "locked-in" syndrome resulting from multiple occlusions of paramedian pontine arteries. Abnormality of BAEPs (first recorded 10 days after infarction) indicated that brainstem damage extended beyond the basis pontis, where, typically, interruption of corticospinal pathways results in the "locked-in" syndrome. Later, partial BAEP recovery suggested that the technique can be used to distinguish between permanent and transient brainstem involvement. Autopsy examination revealed close correspondence between permanent brainstem damage a

[Using brainstem auditory evoked potentials in cerebellopontine angle tumors (author's transl)].

The brainstem electric responses on acoustic stimulation are recorded on 37 patients with verified cerebellopontine angle tumors. These responses are compared with those of 101 normal hearing young adults and those of 47 patients with cochlear hearing loss. The Interval between the latency of the first wawe (acoustic nerve) and the fifth (midbrain) or I-V delay is related to the lesion location. The I-V delay is increased in retro-cochlear hearing loss and not different of the normal in cochlear hearing loss. The delay variation is best seen by comparing the I-V delay for the two ears. The int

Auditory evoked potential audiometry in fish.

This study pointed to explore if variations in circulating levels of metabolites in the blood stream of no. 25 feral donkeys occur in view of the different coat color between specimens of Asinara (albino, no. 8) vs. Sardo (dun-grey, no. 17) breed. All individuals involved in this investigation are living in the nature, at Mediterranean latitudes and roam in the same areas all over the National Park of Capo Caccia, where they feed on spontaneous vegetation sources. The study was conducted during the positive photoperiod of the boreal hemisphere (peak in the month of June, 2019) to maximize the

Developing a Calibration Method to Minimize Variability in Auditory Evoked Potentials.

PURPOSE: To reduce amplitude variability of auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) we developed a circuit that generates an electric calibration pulse (CalPulse) following each evoking sound presentation. We aim to determine if external CalPulse signals can function as a reliable calibration reference for AEP amplitude measurements. METHODS: The CalPulse circuit was integrated with an AEP recording montage. The amplitude and morphology of two CalPulse signals (square wave and sine wave) was first assessed in vitro with electrodes submerged in saline. Repeatability of the two signals was then compa

Effects of Long-Term Musical Training on Cortical Auditory Evoked Potentials.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence suggests that musicians, as a group, have superior frequency resolution abilities when compared with nonmusicians. It is possible to assess auditory discrimination using either behavioral or electrophysiologic methods. The purpose of this study was to determine if the acoustic change complex (ACC) is sensitive enough to reflect the differences in spectral processing exhibited by musicians and nonmusicians. DESIGN: Twenty individuals (10 musicians and 10 nonmusicians) participated in this study. Pitch and spectral ripple discrimination were assessed using both behavioral an

Intensity dependence of auditory evoked potentials during light interference in migraine.

Migraine patients show interictally a strong intensity dependence of auditory evoked cortical potentials (IDAP) and a lack of habituation of evoked potentials. Photic drive on high-frequency flash stimulation is another well-known interictal feature in migraineurs, associated with alpha-rhythm hyper-synchronisation. We compared therefore the influence of light stimulation on IDAP in healthy volunteers (HV) and migraine patients. A continuous flash stimulation was delivered during the recording of auditory evoked potentials at suprathreshold increasing stimulation intensities. IDAP was measured

Impaired auditory frequency discrimination in dyslexia detected with mismatch evoked potentials.

Deficits in phonological skills appear to be at the heart of reading disability; however, the nature of this impairment is not yet known. The hypothesis that dyslexic subjects are impaired in auditory frequency discrimination was tested by using an attention-independent auditory brain potential, termed mismatch negativity (MMN) while subjects performed a visual distractor task. In separate blocks, MMN responses to graded changes in tone frequency or tone duration were recorded in 10 dyslexic and matched control subjects. MMN potentials to changes in tone frequency but not to changes in tone du

Somatosensory and auditory brainstem evoked potentials during choroid plexus angioma removal.

Intraoperative combined SEP and BAEP monitoring provides a high level of safety for patients undergoing high risk intracranial surgical procedures. We performed this type of monitoring in a rare case of choroid plexus angioma, embedded into the pulvinar of the right thalamus, which was resected via a transcallosal approach. The SEP pattern deteriorated during parietal brain retraction and thalamic dissection, but never completely disappeared. The BAEP pattern remained unchanged during the entire operation. The patient suffered incomplete hemiparesis postoperatively, but recovered completely wi

[Correlation of auditory brainstem evoked potentials and pure tone audiometric thresholds].

This work is on relation existing between the objective threshold of auditory brainstem responses in adults and those existing in the different frequencies of audiometry pure-tone, in order to make the audiometry from the objective threshold of the ABR, from the subjective threshold to the click, and the type of hearing loss in question. Such results can be transferred to children, and starting from the ABR in children we could guess their probable audiometric profiles. On that purpose we have studied the auditory brainstem responses and the pure-tone audiometry in 168 ears suffering from hear

Brain-stem auditory evoked potentials and blink reflex in Friedreich's ataxia.

The brain-stem involvement in Friedreich's ataxia (FA) was studied by using brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) and the blink reflex. Ten out of 18 patients had abnormal BAEPs, the main abnormality being complete absence of responses and disappearance of wave V. Combined degeneration of the peripheral and central acoustic pathways probably accounts for these findings. The blink reflex was abnormal in 50% of the cases. The outstanding abnormality was bilateral delay of late responses with normal early response, which could be correlated with the known pallor of the descending trigemin

Auditory evoked potentials as possible predictors of outcome in schizophrenic outpatients.

As part of a follow-up study on long-term neuroleptic treatment, 36 schizophrenic out-patients under neuroleptic treatment were studied in an 'auditory oddball' event-related potential paradigm after a 3-month stabilization phase following clinical discharge. In the first cross-sectional analysis, we evaluated the influences of age and gender and tried to find auditory evoked potential (AEP) variables, which might be promising as potential predictors of the course of illness. Compared with healthy age-matched controls, the patients showed smaller N1/P3-amplitudes. Males and females showed only

Acoustic tumour detection with early auditory evoked potentials and neuroradiological methods.

A total of 43 patients with surgically identified acoustic neuromas were tested. Results of early auditory evoked potentials (EAEP) and of neuroradiological methods were analysed. Abnormal EAEPs were observed in all patients. In 73% of the cases the EAEP indicated the retrocochlear site of the lesion; in 27%, however, the results did not localize the exact site of the lesion owing to a lack of waves I, II and III due to a pronounced hearing loss. Neuroradiological procedures provided an indication of the site and extent of the tumour. The number of true positives was 21 of 29 cases with polyto

Short latency somatosensory evoked potentials and brain-stem auditory evoked potentials in coma due to CNS depressant drug poisoning. Preliminary observations.

In patients in coma due to severe CNS depressant drug overdose the central somatosensory conduction time (CCT) after median nerve stimulation is prolonged and N20 is dispersed. Brain-stem auditory evoked potentials demonstrate delayed interpeak latencies (IPLs) I-III, III-V and I-V. This was observed in 4 out of 5 patients investigated after intake of an overdose of amitriptyline (2 cases), barbiturates, meprobamate and nitrazepam (one case each). Toxic levels of drug overdose were related to prolonged CCT and IPLs, whereas normal CCT and IPLs were found at therapeutic drug plasma levels. CCT,

[Otoacoustic emissions, auditory evoked potentials, pure tone thresholds and speech intelligibility in cases of auditory neuropathy].

The combined findings of "normal evoked otoacoustic emissions (EOAE) and absent or markedly disturbed auditory evoked potentials from the brainstem and/or cortex" has been named auditory neuropathy in the English literature. The pure tone thresholds in these patients range from mild to severe loss. The loss of speech comprehension is out of proportion in comparison to the pure tone threshold elevation. This combination of findings suggests that cochlear function and in particular outer hair cell function, is normal in these patients but also suggests that the inner hair cell / VIII nerve funct

Adjunct Methods for Alzheimer's Disease Detection: A Review of Auditory Evoked Potentials.

The auditory afferent pathway as a clinical marker of Alzheimer's disease (AD) has sparked interest in investigating the relationship between age-related hearing loss (ARHL) and AD. Given the earlier onset of ARHL compared to cognitive impairment caused by AD, there is a growing emphasis on early diagnosis and intervention to postpone or prevent the progression from ARHL to AD. In this context, auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) have emerged as a widely used objective auditory electrophysiological technique for both the clinical diagnosis and animal experimentation in ARHL due to their non-inva
