The potential of phage therapy in bacterial infections of the eye.

Antibiotic resistance has become a major health challenge which poses a significant threat, also in ophthalmology. For example, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus may cause dramatic complications, including bilateral blindness as a consequence of orbital cellulitis and panophthalmitis. This menace has provoked a greatly revived interest in phage therapy. In recent years, a number of papers have been published suggesting its efficacy in animal and human bacterial infections, but none of them addressed the phage potential in ophthalmology, which is the subject of this mini review.

[Chronic persistent infections of anterior segment of eye: clinico-laboratory aspects].

AIM: Improvement of therapy of chronic ophthalmic infectious diseases during assessment of functioning of different arms of immune system. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three hundred and fifty patients with chronic red-eye syndrome were tested by immunofluorescence assay on the presence of antigens of herpesviruses, adenoviruses and Chlamydia in samples from conjunctiva. Expression of 11 cytokines' genes was measured in peripheral blood mononuclear cells by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Production of IFN-alpha and IFN-gamma, levels of serum and spontaneously produced interferon as

Eye manifestations of intrauterine infections and their impact on childhood blindness.

Intrauterine infections are important causes of childhood blindness in both developed and developing countries. Chorioretinal scars are the most characteristic eye manifestation of a congenital or prenatal infection. The various ocular manifestations of congenital infections, summarized by the mnemonic TORCH, and recent additions to the "other" category (lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus and West Nile virus) are discussed.

Nematode infections of the eye: toxocariasis and diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis.

In many parts of the world, parasitic infections of the eye are a major cause of blindness. The parasites Toxocara canis, Onchocerca volvulus, Taenia solium, Ancylostoma caninum, and Cysticercus celulosae all have been responsible for blinding ocular infections. The nematodes T. canis and Toxocara cati are parasitic roundworms that infect dogs (toxocarosis), other canidae, and cats. Ocular toxocariasis is an uncommon worldwide infection caused by the nematode larvae of T. canis, commonly found in dogs. Human transmission is usually via geophagia, the ingestion of food contaminated with Toxocar

Lymphocyte proliferative responses to chlamydial antigens in human chlamydial eye infections.

In order to study the relationship between cell-mediated immune responses to Chlamydia trachomatis and the pathogenesis of human chlamydial eye disease, we have measured the peripheral blood lymphocyte proliferative responses to whole chlamydial elementary bodies in 40 subjects with oculogenital chlamydial infection of varying severity, 13 subjects with genital chlamydial infections and 12 healthy seronegative controls. The mean stimulation index was significantly higher in those with oculogenital infections than in controls. There was a strong correlation between the response to C. trachomati

Role of Eyes and Eyes Protection Amidst SARS-CoV-2 Infection.

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 pandemic has infected millions of people. The conjunctival epithelium is easily exposed to infectious droplets and body fluids making eyes a potential route and reservoir of the infection. The CD147 and ACE2 receptor has been demonstrated in ocular surface cells, which implies that these cells may facilitate as a portal of entry for transmission of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2. Despite low viral load in tears and conjunctival swab, the negative RT-PCR results cannot exclude the possibility of the presence of Severe Acute Respir

Herpesvirus infection of eye and brain in HIV infected patients.

OBJECTIVES: To compare histological with genome detection methods for diagnosis of herpesvirus infection in eye and brain of HIV infected patients undergoing necropsy and to correlate these findings with both antemortem clinical findings and postmortem evidence of extraocular herpesvirus infection, especially in the CNS. METHODS: A prospective study of 31 consecutive HIV infected patients undergoing necropsy. In life 11 patients had been assessed by an ophthalmologist because of ocular symptoms. Ocular and brain samples were examined for herpesviruses by conventional histological methods and

Psychological stress and other potential triggers for recurrences of herpes simplex virus eye infections. Herpetic Eye Disease Study Group.

OBJECTIVE: To assess psychological stress and other factors as possible triggers of ocular herpes simplex virus (HSV) recurrences. DESIGN: A prospective cohort study nested in a randomized, placebo-controlled, clinical trial. SETTING: Fifty-eight community-based or university sites. PARTICIPANTS: Immunocompetent adults (N = 308), aged 18 years or older, with a documented history of ocular HSV disease in the prior year and observed for up to 15 months. EXPOSURE VARIABLES: Psychological stress, systemic infection, sunlight exposure, menstrual period, contact lens wear, and eye injury recorded

Viral infection of the lungs through the eye.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the foremost respiratory pathogen in newborns and claims millions of lives annually. However, there has been no methodical study of the pathway(s) of entry of RSV or its interaction with nonrespiratory tissues. We and others have recently established a significant association between allergic conjunctivitis and the presence of RSV in the eye. Here we adopt a BALB/c mouse model and demonstrate that when instilled in the live murine eye, RSV not only replicated robustly in the eye but also migrated to the lung and produced a respiratory disease that is indist

[When should eye infection be suspected?].

During simple inspection of an inflamed eye it is often difficult to diagnose an infection. However, infection must be suspected, notably in cases with facilitating factors. Eye infection requires management by specialists to prevent complications which might endanger vision.

The effect of cyclosporine in chlamydial eye infection.

The effect of cyclosporine (CsA) treatment in both primary and secondary Chlamydia trachomatis ocular infection in cynomolgus monkeys was studied. Following primary infection, CsA-treated animals developed severe clinical symptoms which persisted for up to 12 weeks compared to control animals which developed less severe inflammation lasting only 4 to 6 weeks. CsA treatment had no effect on the clinical course of a second ocular infection. Antigen-specific antibodies developed normally in the serum and tears of all animals, but the titer of IgM in serum and secreted IgA in tears of CsA-treated

Gas gangrene infection of the eyes and orbits.

The literature on Clostridium perfringens infections is reviewed up to 1983. An additional case is reported with bilateral clostridial infections of the eye and orbit. One eye followed the classical course of relentless panophthalmitis, amaurosis, and orbital cellulitis ending in enucleation. The second eye contained intracameral mud and gas bubbles that were removed by vitrectomy instrumentation. Subsequent removal of the toxic cataract resulted in a final aided visual acuity of 6/18, N8. This is the third report of a retained globe, and we believe the only known case where the patient was le
