Following a brief review of the literature, three patients with fulminating periocular infections resulting in necrosis of the eyelids are reported on. The case histories demonstrate certain common features, different aetiological factors and diverse end results. The pathogenesis, microbiology and treatment are discussed.

Sebaceous carcinomas are rare, and deadly, adnexal tumors with a distinct predilection for eyelid skin. A chronic blepharoconjunctivitis and/or a recurrent chalazion are the most common clinical presentations that should alert the clinician to the diagnosis. Great care and skill are needed in interpreting these lesions histopathologically as they can be easily confused with basal- and squamous-cell carcinomas.

Blepharoplasty is a commonly performed aesthetic surgery, especially in Asians. Nevertheless, as in all surgeries, postoperative complications still occur. Asymmetry is the most common complication after double eyelid surgery. Preexisting asymmetries in patient appearance and technical faults during surgery are associated with postoperative asymmetrical double eyelids. In this review, we discuss how to prevent unfavorable outcomes after this procedure and how to manage asymmetrical double eyelids when they do occur.

A 68-year-old Caucasian woman presented with a 1-month history of a facial and neck eruption (Figure 1A). Her face was covered with 3-mm monomorphic, pink, shiny, papules and rare pustules on an erythematous background. The eruption extended down the neck, her conjunctivae were injected, and her lid margins were inflamed. She had no history of rosacea.

A subepidermal calcified nodule is an uncommon variant of calcinosis cutis and only a limited number of cases have been reported about the eyelid nodules in the literature. A 20-year-old male was referred to our department with symmetrical nodules on both upper eyelids enlarging over 3 years. Both nodules were removed by excisional biopsy. Myeloid sarcoma is an unusual manifestation of acute leukemia. These leukemic tumors have been described in multiple organ systems. A clinical case of Phthirus pubis infestation of the eyelids in an eight-year-old boy is presented. He complained of a bilateral eyelids inflammation for the last two weeks which had not healed with a daily application of a collyrium. Physical examination showed the presence of small dark spheres, of approximately 1 mm, attached to the proximal extreme of the eyelashes. PURPOSE: The eyelids of 15 AIDS patients (17 specimens) were examined histologically at postmortem.
METHODS: Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded and haematoxylin-eosin stained sections were examined by conventional light microscopy. The presence of calcific deposits was confirmed by special stains and elemental analysis (X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy).

Streptococcal necrotizing fasciitis in previously healthy persons can develop quickly and may be difficult to diagnose. In a number of cases, this potentially fatal condition has been seen originally in the eyelid and orbit. Intensive antibiotic therapy and prompt debridement are the usual course of treatment.

A case of a small eyelid wound associated with a retained foreign body within the orbit is presented. The significance of small eyelid lacerations in relation to minor initial clinical signs and possible serious late complications is discussed, and suggestions are made for management of all such injuries.
