INTRODUCTION: Dog bites are common and can affect victims of different ages, from children to the elderly. Injuries are usually located in different body regions, including head and face. The treatment of choice for injuries is the suture of the lesion, accompanied by antibiotic therapy and tetanus and anti-rabies vaccination.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: An 11-year-old male black patient was admitted to the Surgery and Maxillo-Facial Traumatology Service, on an urgent basis, victim of domestic animal aggression (dog biting). The child had multiple and extensive lesions on the face, trauma with lace

OBJECTIVE: (1) Explain the need for an animal model to study intracranial injuries to the facial nerve. (2) Describe various techniques attempted to identify and crush the intracranial segment of the facial nerve in a rat model. (3) Describe in detail a successful rat model of intracranial facial nerve crush injury.
STUDY DESIGN: Randomized controlled animal study.
SETTING: Animal laboratory.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Multiple attempts at surgical approaches to the cerebellopontine angle were attempted on cadaveric rats. Once a successful approach was derived, this was used on 19 live rats unde

BACKGROUND: The association between facial and cervical spine injuries has been documented. However, only severe spinal injuries were includ … real chance of injuring their face as well. The cervical spine must be examined carefully, whenever facial injuries are present.

BACKGROUND: Each year, in the United states, approximately 900 persons die from injuries due to bicycle crashes and over 500,000 persons are treated in emergency departments. Head injury is by far the greatest risk posed to bicyclists, comprising one-third of emergency department visits, two-thirds of hospital admissions, and three-fourths of deaths. Facial injuries to cyclists occur at a rate nearly identical to that of head injuries. Although it makes inherent sense that helmets would be protective against head injury, establishing the real-world effectiveness of helmets is important. A numb…

Both blunt and penetrating craniofacial trauma may lead to severe facial nerve injury and sequelae of facial paralysis. Initial evaluation involves quantitation of motor deficits using a clinical grading system, such as the House-Brackmann scale. High resolution computed tomography is used for localization of nerve injury in suspected cases of temporal bone trauma. In the absence of gross radiographic abnormalities, electrophysiologic testing helps predict the likelihood of spontaneous recovery. In patients with deteriorating facial nerve injuries by electroneuronography, surgical exploration

PURPOSE: To evaluate the technique of tissue traction for the management of severe facial injuries.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty patients, 15 adults and five children, with severe soft tissue facial disfigurement resulting from war injuries were treated by the tissue traction technique.
RESULTS: This procedure provides a cosmetically acceptable appearance when used as an immediate measure. A few complications were encountered in delayed cases such as areas of skin breakdown and some stiffness.
CONCLUSION: The described technique proved to have several advantages over other more commonly use…

Patients with facial trauma may have associated injuries requiring immediate or specialised attention. This paper reports the incidence and nature of significant associated neurosurgical, ocular, spinal, torso and extremity injuries in facial fracture patients treated by the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery from June 1989 to June 1992. Of 839 patients treated during the period, 95 patients (11.3%) sustained significant concomitant injuries outside the facial skeleton. There were 45 (5.4%) patients with associated neurosurgical injuries, 33 (3.9%) with ocular injuries, 8 (0.9%)

12 cases of serious complications of mandibular fractures in 16 vagrant alcohol-dependent patients are described. Psycho-social and metabolic factors contributed to the high frequency of infections, including osteomyelitis. The severe difficulties encountered in the treatment of patients with mandibular fractures and alcoholism are discussed.

The reapproximation of individual fascicles has been advocated as a microsurgical method of improving neural regeneration following peripheral nerve injuries. To date, this technique has met with limited success, in part owing to an unclear understanding of the anatomic location of fibers in the proximal nerve relative to their distal distribution on the face. Fascicular repair is indicated in clean lacerations of the nerve trunk distal to the stylomastoid foramen. For long defects or injuries proximal to the midmastoid region (where the nerve is monofascicular), simple nerve trunk sutures sho

PURPOSE: Safety equipment for recreational cycling is commonly designed to protect the calvarium, but not the face, in the event of a crash. The purpose of this study is to identify the prevalence of facial injuries and their most common subcategories due to cycling injuries and to serve as an anatomical guide of what facial structures most need protection.
METHODS: We report a cross-sectional study of consecutive patients reported to the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2019. Patients were included in our study if they were evaluated in the …

Facial fractures are common in the multiply-traumatized patient, and the results of previous studies that have examined the relationship between facial fractures, cervical spine injuries, and head injuries have produced conflicting results. A retrospective review of 1,050 blunt-trauma patients during a 40-month period at a regional trauma unit revealed 168 patients with facial fractures. The average injury severity score (ISS) of these patients with facial fractures was 31 compared with an average ISS of 25.6 for the entire group. There were 266 facial fractures in these 168 patients: mandible

Facial nerve trauma can be a devastating injury resulting in functional deficits and psychological distress. Deciding on the optimal course of treatment for patients with traumatic facial nerve injuries can be challenging, as there are many critical factors to be considered for each patient. Choosing from the great array of therapeutic options available can become overwhelming to both patients and physicians, and in this article, the authors present a systematic approach to help organize the physician's thought process.
