The incidence of facial nerve paralysis is approximately 30 per 100,000 persons annually. Although it is often idiopathic, as in Bell's palsy, it can also result from infections, trauma, or neoplasms. Facial nerve paralysis may present with partial or total facial paresis, lagophthalmos, denervation of the lacrimal gland, and other ocular abnormalities. While dry eye is a commonly expected outcome of facial nerve injury, some patients may paradoxically experience epiphora and hyperlacrimation. In this review, we examine this phenomenon and its mechanisms in facial nerve injury. Several mechani

The intimate anatomical relationship of the facial nerve to the parotid parenchyma has a significant influence on the presenting signs and symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of parotid neoplasms. However, to our knowledge, hyperactivity of this nerve, presenting as facial spasm, has never been described as the presenting sign or symptom of a parotid malignancy. We report a case of carcinoma arising in a recurrent pleomorphic adenoma of the left parotid gland (i.e., carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma) that presented with hemifacial spasms. We outline the differential diagnosis of hemifacial spasm

We evaluate treatment outcomes in children with benign parotid neoplasms who underwent extracapsular dissection of the tumor using minimal incisions. Nine pediatric patients (4 boys and 5 girls) with pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland were treated with extracapsular dissection via preauricular and retroauricular incisions. The mean age of the patients at the time of surgery was 9.4 years. The size of the tumors ranged from 1.5 × 1.4 to 3.5 × 3.0 cm. Seven tumors were located in the superficial lobe of the parotid gland and 2 were located in the deep lobe. All histologically confirmed cas

The spread of metastases to the brain and the leptomeninges is usually a terminal event in patients with known malignancies. We report on two patients, in whom the diagnosis of a diffusely metastasizing carcinoma was considerably delayed by the initial symptom of a peripheral facial nerve paralysis. The clinical, neuroradiologic and cerebrospinal fluid findings are discussed. A malignant neoplasm with diffuse or focal metastasis to the leptomeninges is a rare cause of peripheral facial paralysis of unclear genesis. The necessity of a lumbar puncture plus magnetic resonance imaging of the brain

Harlequin syndrome is a rare neurological condition that results in unilateral facial flushing and sweating. Although the syndrome is generally a benign condition with complete resolution if appropriate treatment is initiated, unilateral facial flushing can be a sign of several serious conditions and should be thoroughly investigated. Sudden onset of facial flushing related to harlequin syndrome developed in a patient who had bilateral lung transplant with postoperative epidural anesthesia for pain control. Differential diagnosis includes neurovascular disease (acute stroke), malignant neoplas

BACKGROUND: Cosmetic defects after the major orofacial disease corrections may have an effect on the overall well-being of the patient. Head-and-neck cosmetic surgeries after a major episode of oral cancer impact the functional ability of the individual in several ways. In general, two types of flap are used in reconstructive surgery: microvascular free flaps and regional pedicle flaps. In socioeconomically poor countries like India, bilobed pectoralis major myocutaneous (PMMC) flap has been seen as a mainstay in facial reconstructive surgeries.

Introduction Maxillary sinus disease is common and numerous disorders can affect this anatomical area. Abnormalities can be classified as: non-neoplastic, neoplastic benign, and neoplastic malignant. Objective Evaluate through CT the prevalence of diseases in maxillary sinuses, using the Radiology Department's database of a hospital in São Paulo city. Methods The sample consisted of 762 facial CT scans that we divided into three groups: Group A (12-19 years old); Group B (20-49 years old); Group C (above 50 years old); and male or female. We considered the following pathological processes: I -

Facial nerve hemangiomas are rare benign tumors arising from the venous plexus surrounding the facial nerve. Surgical management of these tumors is controversial. The goal of surgery is complete tumor removal with restoration of facial nerve function and preservation of hearing, wherever possible. The approaches most used are the translabyrinthine and middle cranial fossa approaches. In this report, we describe the first facial hemangioma treated with an endoscopic transcanal approach, combined with a retroauricular transmastoid minicraniotomy for closure of the dural defect. A great auricular

PURPOSE: To report three cases of facial nerve lesions that were clinically expected to be facial nerve tumors but showed fibrotic infiltration without any apparent signs of a specific tumor on histopathological findings. We also aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics of these cases.
METHODS: Medical records of patients who underwent surgery for facial nerve lesions were reviewed.
RESULTS: All three cases initially had House-Brackmann (HB) grade IV-V facial nerve palsy. On radiological imaging, schwannoma or glomus tumor originating from the facial nerve was suspected. All patient

A 31 year-old black woman with unilateral facial dysesthesia was found to have an intracranial parasellar mass that extended into the sphenoid sinus. By light microscopy, the neoplasm appeared as nests of poorly differentiated neuroblasts in a finely fibrillary stroma and was diagnosed as an esthesineuroblastoma. Electron microscopy confirmed the neuroblastic nature of the tumor with demonstration of neurites containing neurofilaments and neurotubules, synapses and dense cored biogenic amine granules in perikarya and processes. This neoplasm was further characterized by the presence of numerou

Over the past 10 years, 2000 patients with facial pain have been evaluated at the Mayfield Neurologic Institute. Sixteen of these patients were found to harbor intracranial tumors. The presenting features of this group of patients are analyzed, and the literature reviewed. Peripherally placed tumors tend to cause atypical facial pain associated with sensory loss. Middle fossa tumors may present as trigeminal neuralgia, but usually cause severe pain of an atypical nature and a progressive neurological deficit. Posterior fossa tumors are most likely to cause trigeminal neuralgia; these neoplasms

Angiosarcomas are sporadic vascular neoplasms among the most aggressive subtypes of soft tissue sarcomas. In addition, vast and multiple recurrent superficial scalp and facial angiosarcomas are very complex and extremely difficult to manage. Their occurrence brings about significant social and emotional distress to affected individuals. To date, no specific therapeutic strategy has been the most effective and reliable. Herein, we report a highly unique case of a geriatric male patient with recurrent scalp and facial angiosarcoma successfully treated by a chemotherapy-free regimen consisting of

INTRODUCTION: Meningiomas are relatively uncommon neoplasms in the pediatric population and posterior fossa is a very rare location for these tumors. Only a few cases of contralateral cranial nerve deficits have been reported but no cases of pediatric meningioma with contralateral facial nerve paresis have been documented in literature.
CEREBELLOPONTINE ANGLE MENINGIOMA WHO CASE REPORT: We present a 4 year old girl with found postoperative contralateral facial nerve paresis.
DISCUSSION: The possible pathogenesis and literature review concerning this complication are discussed. The mechanisms

Facial nerve monitoring has been increasingly routinely used as an intraoperative adjunctive method to help the head and neck surgeon to identify and minimize facial nerve injury during parotid surgery. The goals, current applications, recent technical advances, and limitations of the method are reviewed. A main focus of this chapter is a review of several prospective clinical trials that have been performed in recent years that have analyzed the benefit of electrophysiological nerve monitoring during parotid surgery. It has been demonstrated that nerve monitoring reduces the risk of early pos

OBJECTIVE: Occult lesions involving the facial nerve can be misdiagnosed as idiopathic facial paralysis, also known as Bell's palsy. Our goal was to compare the clinical features of patients with idiopathic/viral versus non-idiopathic facial paralysis and identify predictors of malignant etiologies.
METHODS: Retrospective chart review of 276 patients referred for surgical management of facial paralysis at two large facial nerve tertiary care centers.
RESULTS: A total of 176 patients had idiopathic/viral facial paralysis (IFP) and 60 patients had non-idiopathic facial paralysis (non-IFP), inc

Facial nerve trauma occasionally develops during oral and maxillofacial surgery. This study was aimed at enhancing the available knowledge on facial nerve reanimation correlated to surgery and proposing our surgical algorithm. We retrospectively analyzed medical records of patients who underwent facial reanimation surgery at our hospital. The inclusion criterion was surgery for facial reanimation from January 2004 to June 2021. We included 383 eligible patients who underwent facial reanimation surgery. Trauma or maxillofacial neoplasms were noted in 208 of 383 and 164 of 383 cases, respectivel…

Hemangiomas are benign vascular neoplasms characterized by an abnormal proliferation of blood vessels. They may occur in any vascularized tissue including skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscle, and bone. Intraosseous hemangiomas are uncommon, constituting less than 1% of all osseous tumors. The most frequent sites are the calvaria and the vertebral column. Involvement of the facial bones is rare and occurs most commonly in the maxilla, mandible, and nasal bones. In literature, only 20 cases of zygomatic involvement have been reported. We report a case of an intraosseous hemangioma of the zygoma wi

Metastatic tumors to the temporal bone are very rare. The most common sites of origin of temporal bone metastases are breast, lung, kidney, gastrointestinal tract, larynx, prostate gland, and thyroid gland. The pathogenesis of spread to the temporal bone is most commonly by the hematogenous route. The common otologic symptoms that manifest with facial nerve paralysis are often thought to be due to a mastoid infection. Here is a report on a case of breast carcinoma presenting with otalgia, otorrhea, and facial paralysis for 2 months. The patient was initially diagnosed as mastoiditis, and later

Dysfunction of the facial nerve is frequently attributed to inflammation, followed by traumatic injury. Knowledge of the complex anatomical course of the facial nerve is critical to localize the site of pathology and for successful management. The multiplicity of etiologies and its complex anatomy often make facial paralysis a diagnostic challenge. Neoplasms are a fairly rare cause of peripheral facial palsy, and are frequently overlooked in search of the more frequent traumatic or inflammatory etiologies of facial paralysis. Isolated metastatic lesions to the cerebellopontine angle (CPA) and
