A family study of HbS in a Malay family by molecular analysis.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited red cell disorder, characterized by the tendency of haemoglobin S or sickle haemoglobin to polymer … t 517 and 267 base pair (bp) respectively. This report highlights the investigations for SCD in the family of a 16-year old girl with recurrent painful crisis affecting the lower limbs whereby the family members are asymptomatic for the disease. Her haemoglobin electrophoresis at an alkaline pH showed dense bands at the HbS and HbF regions, while her fat …

The relationship of family stability and family mealtime frequency with bulimia symptomatology.

The present study extended previous research reporting an association between frequency of family mealtimes and bulimia nervosa by exploring whether family mealtimes might be a component of a larger construct of family stability. One hundred thirty-four female undergraduates completed retrospective measures of family stability, frequency of shared family mealtimes, and a measure of bulimia symptomatology. Results indicate that family stability is a more comprehensive predictor of bulimia symptomatology than meal frequency alone. Implications for intervention and treatment options are discussed…

Family breakup and adolescents' psychosocial maladjustment: public health implications of family disruptions.

OBJECTIVES: Recent changes in family structure are associated with an increase in psychosocial maladjustment in adolescents. We examined, from a public health intervention perspective, the association between family breakup and psychosocial maladjustment in adolescents and assessed the mediating role of family-functioning variables. METHODS: We analyzed data from the Social and Health Survey of Children and Adolescents in Quebec, Montreal, Canada, which was conducted in 1999. Sample-weighted logistic regression analyses were performed to determine the risk of internalizing disorders, external…

Family characteristics of deficit and nondeficit schizophrenia in the Roscommon Family Study.

Studies of course, treatment response, biological correlates, and environmental risk factors have suggested that the deficit syndrome of schizophrenia defines a meaningful subgroup within schizophrenia. Probands from the Roscommon Family Study who met criteria for schizophrenia or simple schizophrenia were categorized into deficit (N=22) and nondeficit (N=111). Within schizophrenia, the lifetime prevalence of the deficit syndrome was 16.5%; the percentage of males was 91% compared to 63% in the nondeficit group. The first-degree relatives of deficit probands had a significantly greater social …

Perceived social support and family meeting attendance preferences among family medicine outpatients.

Although there is much social science literature about social support, relatively little is known about the extent and sources of support that family medicine patients perceive to be available to them. A questionnaire requesting ratings of perceived informational, instrumental, emotional, and crisis support in a variety of relationships was administered to 101 family practice center outpatients. Results indicated strong perceptions of available support overall, with highest levels perceived from partners and parents. Notably, however, strong support was also perceived from extrafamilial source…

[Family Psychiatry - The Attachment-Focused, Systemic-Oriented, Integrative Concept of the Family Therapy Centre (FaTC), an Acute Multi-Family Day Clinic].

Family Psychiatry - The Attachment-Focused, Systemic-Oriented, Integrative Concept of the Family Therapy Centre (FaTC), an Acute Multi-Family Day Clinic Up to three quarters of the children of mentally ill parents develop a mental disorder during their lifetime. The transmission occurs essentially through dysfunctional interaction and disturbed attachment. Parent-child interaction is characterized by a vicious circle of escalating symptoms in the child and increasing helplessness in the parents. For this family psychiatric approaches are helpful, which address the interaction in addition to th…

[Genetics and family medicine].

There have been spectacular advances in genetics in the last decades. Their implications in medicine have been so relevant that the family doctor cannot ignore them. However, interestingly, our specialty training program has hardly any contents related to this discipline. For this reason, several publications have warned of the need to correct this deficit and to determine the knowledge, skills and abilities in genetics that should be acquired by family physicians. It is considered that, in addition to some general concepts, we must have training related to genetic testing, genetic counselling…

[Is family history dispensable?].

As an element of risk assessment in applications for life insurance, family medical history has a particular significance since given impairments can occur more frequently within families. Family history is not only genetic in nature. Depending on the impairment, it is also explained by external factors. There has been little literature on this topic so far, although the spectrum of family history-related impairments is very large, and their effect is highly dependent on the type of product. This paper presents a new method for assessing the effects of information contained in family history o…

[Family planning, what's new?].

Women rely on complete and precise information given by doctors and family planning consultants for choosing a suitable contraceptive. Available hormonal contraceptives in Switzerland are presented. Personal and family history are essential for evaluating medical contraindications to combined hormonal methods. Combined pills, vaginal hormonal rings and combined patches share the same contraceptive effects, contraindications and overall cardiovascular risks. Prescribers should prefer second generation pills because of lower risks of venous thromboembolic disease. Non oral methods are generally …

Family cases of gastroschisis.

The etiology of gastroschisis is still unclear. To the authors' knowledge, there are only 14 cases of familial gastroschisis in the literature. The authors add the second case of mother-and-son occurrence and a case of siblings occurrence, thereby updating the current literature for family gastroschisis.

IL-17 cytokine family.

A new family of cytokines, IL-17, has recently been defined that reveals a distinct ligand-receptor signaling system. Functional studies have provided evidence for its importance in the regulation of immune responses. Notably, 3 members, IL-17A, IL-17E (IL-25), and IL-17F, have been best characterized both in vitro and in vivo , and have been shown to be proinflammatory in nature. This proinflammatory activity is exemplified by their involvement in pulmonary inflammatory responses, in which both IL-17A and IL-17F are involved in the recruitment of neutrophils, and IL-17E is able to induce T H …

Minnesota Twin Family Study.

The Minnesota Twin Family Study is a longitudinal study of 11-year-old and 17-year-old twins and their parents designed to examine factors related to the etiology of substance abuse and related problems. At study intake, the twins and their parents participate in a day-long assessment in our laboratory that includes measures of endophenotypes (e.g., event-related potentials, EEG, autonomic nervous system reactivity, startle eye-blink), psychopathology, personality, cognitive ability, anthropometry, and environmental risk/protective factors. DNA derived from blood is also collected. A parallel …

The estrogen receptor family.

A significant flow of new data is currently being generated within the field of estrogen receptors and their mechanisms of action. This is primarily a result of the development of estrogen receptor knockout mice and the discovery of the second estrogen receptor, estrogen receptor beta. Both estrogen receptors appear to be involved in a multitude of regulatory events, the details of which will be worked out within the next few years. Estrogen receptor alpha appears to play a major role in the regulation of reproductive events and estrogen receptor alpha knockout female mice are completely infer

The sulfatase gene family.

During the past few years, molecular analyses have provided important insights into the biochemistry and genetics of the sulfatase family of enzymes, identifying the molecular bases of inherited diseases caused by sulfatase deficiencies. New members of the sulfatase gene family have been identified in man and other species using a genomic approach. These include the gene encoding arylsulfatase E, which is involved in X-linked recessive chondrodysplasia punctata, a disorder of cartilage and bone development. Another important breakthrough has been the discovery of the biochemical basis of multi…
