Congenital insensitivity to pain in four related Saudi families.

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) is expanding in clinical practice, yet many pipelines defer actionable decisions until full alignment and taxonomic calling are complete. The primary contribution of In Silico Sequence Mining (ISSM) lies in providing an accessible graphical-user-interface-based workflow for rapid probe-based pre-alignment screening of raw FASTQ/FASTA datasets. ISSM performs probe-based matching of predefined targets directly on raw FASTQ/FASTA files and supports configurable match thresholds and subsampling. We assessed ISSM using 4 datasets, including 34,899 coronavirus genome

Family- and school-related stresses in depressed Hungarian children.

The aim of the study was 1) to identify recent and past life stresses as having a significant differential risk of childhood depression versus other childhood psychiatric illnesses, and 2) to establish if life stresses shared with other family members had a greater impact on the depression of the child than events of only personal relevance. Using a recently developed semi-structured interview (Diagnostic Evaluation Schedule for Children and Adolescents - Hungarian version, DESCA-H ), 68 life events of a total sample of 526 children were investigated. Two hundred and fifteen depressed preadole

Familial Episodic Ataxias and Related Ion Channel Disorders.

Familial episodic ataxias are unusual hereditary disorders of early onset characterized by recurrent episodes of ataxia. Most patients recover fully between attacks, but some may develop progressive ataxia with cerebellar atrophy. There are two subtypes of episodic ataxia: type 1 (EA1), with interictal myokymia, and type 2 (EA2), with interictal nystagmus. Stress and fatigue can trigger ataxic spells, which can be responsive to acetazolamide. These clinical features are reminiscent of other channelopathies or paroxysmal neurologic disorders with progressive features caused by ion channel mutat

The relation of family and partner support to the adjustment of adolescent mothers.

The influence of teenage mothers' perceptions of family and partner social support on their postpartum adjustment was examined in this study. A structured interview with teenage mothers was conducted prenatally and a follow-up assessment was done when their children were 8 months of age. Both partner and family support were related to greater satisfaction with life, but each was associated in a different way with parenting and concerns about daily living. The results indicate the importance of distinguishing between specific sources of social support and different aspects of adjustment to teen

Families at risk for destructive parent-child relations in adolescence.

This paper examines the parental, adolescent, and family system characteristics that place a family at risk for destructive parent-child relations in adolescence. It is based on a study of 62 families, all of which contained a youth (age 10-16) and 2 parents and were referred because of the adjustment problems of the adolescent. A 3-member team visited the family at home to administer a 3 1/2-hour battery of questionnaire, interview, and observation instruments. These included a measure of risk for destructive parent-child relations (the Adolescent-Abuse Inventory); the Achenbach Child Behavio

A family history study of schizophrenia-related personality disorders.

This study examined whether the family history method can be used to detect cases of schizophrenia-related personality disorder in the families of schizophrenic patients. After proposing specific family history criteria for this diagnosis, the authors applied these criteria in a blind family history study and found that schizophrenia-related personality disorders were significantly more common in the first-degree relatives of schizophrenic patients than in the relatives of medically ill controls.

The unique characteristics of "families of choice" and families of origin of older LGBTQ + adults: are they related to mental health?

PURPOSE: This study joins a growing body of research on the different types of families of aging individuals belonging to sexual and gender minorities. We explore the characteristics of "families of choice" (who are close enough to be considered as family) and families of origin of LGBTQ + older adults and their associations with mental health. METHODS: Data for this study were collected via an online survey with self-identified lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender, queer and others (LGBTQ +) adults aged 50 + (n = 432). Participants were asked about characteristics of the relationships with t

The familial phenotype of obsessive-compulsive disorder in relation to tic disorders: the Hopkins OCD family study.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and tic disorders have phenomenological and familial-genetic overlaps. An OCD family study sample that excludes Tourette's syndrome in probands is used to examine whether tic disorders are part of the familial phenotype of OCD. METHODS: Eighty case and 73 control probands and their first-degree relatives were examined by experienced clinicians using the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia-Lifetime Anxiety version. DSM-IV psychiatric diagnoses were ascertained by a best-estimate consensus procedure. The prevalence and severity of t

The Admitted Family Model: A Relational Framework for Adolescent Inpatient Care.

BackgroundAdolescent psychiatric hospitalisation is often organised as if one patient had entered the ward while the family remained outside. This may stabilise acute symptoms but can intensify relational rupture, institutional dependency and weakened parental agency.ObjectiveThis paper presents the Admitted Family Model, hereafter referred to as the AFM, as a clinical-conceptual framework for adolescent inpatient care.ApproachThe AFM is developed from sustained clinical observation, multidisciplinary reflection, supervision, teaching and iterative comparison with family systems, mentalisation

Helicobacter pylori outer membrane protein families and related pathogenesis.

Helicobacter pylori infection is one of the most common bacterial infections worldwide and a major cause of chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers, and gastric cancer. The outer membrane proteins (OMPs) of H. pylori play crucial roles in its pathogenesis, acting as key mediators of bacterial adhesion, immune evasion, and interactions with the host. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the various OMPs involved in H. pylori pathogenesis, including their roles as adhesins, porins, and in biofilm formation. Additionally, this review explores the involvement of OMPs in triggering proi

Involvement of Bcl-2 Family Proteins in Tetraploidization-Related Senescence.

The B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) family of proteins is the main regulator of apoptosis. However, multiple emerging evidence has revealed that Bcl-2 family proteins are also involved in cellular senescence. On the one hand, the different expression of these proteins determines the entry into senescence. On the other hand, entry into senescence modulates the expression of these proteins, generally conferring resistance to apoptosis. With some exceptions, senescent cells are characterized by the upregulation of antiapoptotic proteins and downregulation of proapoptotic proteins. Under physiological c
