Farmer's Lung Disease.

Farmer's lung disease (FLD) is a hypersensitivity pneumonitis secondary to the inhalation of moldy hay spores. Its prevalence is likely underestimated despite the fact it may result in significant acute and chronic respiratory disability. The immunologic mechanisms are best explained as Gell and Coombs Type III & IV reactions. FLD is usually recognized by history and appropriate laboratory confirmation. Therapy requires removal of the patient from the offending antigens, although corticosteroids may be useful for constitutional symptoms.

Farmer's Lung in Urbanites.

A case of Farmer's Lung in a city dweller who rides horses for recreation is reported. A survey of the members of an urban riding club found that 13% of the persons surveyed had antibodies to T. polyspora in their circulation.Comparing the average rainfall in the area of the riding club to average rainfall throughout regions across the country, it is likely that Farmer's Lung is more prevalent than previously thought.More information about the incidence of this preventable respiratory disease in Canada is needed.

Difference in Accidents, Health Symptoms, and Ergonomic Problems between Conventional Farmers Using Pesticides and Organic Farmers.

Organic farming has been promoted in Thailand by King Rama the ninth. In addition to being healthier for consumers, organic farming is healthier for agricultural workers. Data were collected using questionnaires in face-to-face interviews. The results indicated symptoms that could be related to pesticide exposure (skin rashes, water blisters, headache, dizziness, and loss …

Hyaluronic acid (hyaluronan) in BAL fluid distinguishes farmers with allergic alveolitis from farmers with asymptomatic alveolitis.

Pulmonary function measurements, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), and analyses of precipitating antibodies in blood were performed in 12 farmers wtih no symptoms from the airways and 12 farmers who were admitted to the hospital due to acute symptoms of alveolitis (all nonsmokers). In addition, a bronchial methacholine provocation test was performed in the asymptomatic farmers. In 11 of the 12 symptomatic farmers but in none of the asymptomatic farmers, precipitating antibodies against one or more of the microorganisms which usually occur in a farmer's environment were found. In the farmers with s…

[Pulmonary nocardiosis in a farmer].

We describe a farmer who was diagnosed to have pulmonary nocardiosis as an occupational disease. This case is the first occupational pulmonary nocardiosis in Finland, where the infection is rare altogether. The way of exposure is typical and there is a similar case published earlier in Germany. Because farmers are significantly exposed to organic dusts, bacteria and molds, it is always important to consider the possibility of an occupational disease even in the case of an acute infection.
