Aging human body: changes in bone, muscle and body fat with consequent changes in nutrient intake.

Aging affects almost all physiological processes, but changes in body composition and body phenotype are most observable. In this review, we focus on these changes, including loss of bone and muscle and increase in body fat or redistribution of the latter, possibly leading to osteosarcopenic obesity syndrome. We also address low-grade chronic inflammation, prevalent in aging adults and a cause of many disorders including those associated with body composition. Changes in dietary intake and nutritional requirements of older individuals, that all may lead to some disturbances on tissue and organ

[Effect of anticancer treatment on leptin level, fat body mass (FM) and lean body mass (LBM)].

UNLABELLED: Leptin plays an important role in the metabolism of adipose tissue. Considering that malignancy and its treatment cans affect normal development in childhood. We analysed the correlations between serum leptin levels and body composition after anticancer treatment. We studied 33 survivors (24 boys and 9 girls) who before our study, have been treated for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) (n=23) and Hodgkin disease (n=10) after 7.15+/-3.5 years. Sixteen patients with ALL received cranial irradiation (12Gy). We measured body mass index (BM1) fat mass (FM) and lean body mass (LBM) usi

Superovulation with urinary human follicle-stimulating hormone: correlations with body mass index and body fat distribution.

Our objective was to investigate the relationship between body mass index (BMI), waist/hip ratio (WHR), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) dose, length of stimulation and clinical outcome in infertile women with and without polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) undergoing controlled ovarian hyperstimulation. Controlled ovarian hyperstimulation was induced in 60 women for a total of 111 cycles (48% in PCOS patients) with urinary human FSH (u-hFSH). A significant correlation between BMI, u-hFSH dose and duration of stimulation was found in PCOS and non-PCOS patients with WHR < 0.8. These correlations

Interrelation among dietary energy and fat intakes, maternal body fatness, and milk total lipid in humans.

The relationship between maternal dietary intakes of energy or fat maternal body composition and the milk fat concentration is an important element in understanding the role of breast-milk in infant nutrition. In most studies in both developing and developed countries, no relation between maternal energy intake and milk fat content was observed. In only one published study, in which maternal fat intake comprised a very low 5% of calories, was a short term reduction in milk lipid observed in some subjects. On the other hand, a positive relation between maternal fatness and milk fat is evident i

Methane and hydrogen positivity on breath test is associated with greater body mass index and body fat.

CONTEXT: Colonization of the gastrointestinal tract with methanogenic archaea (methanogens) significantly affects host metabolism and weight gain in animal models, and breath methane is associated with a greater body mass index (BMI) among obese human subjects. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to characterize the relationship between methane and hydrogen on breath test (as a surrogate for colonization with the hydrogen requiring methanogen, Methanobrevibacter smithii), body weight, and percent body fat in a general population cohort. DESIGN AND SUBJECTS: This was a prospective study

Swimming exercise increases serum irisin level and reduces body fat mass in high-fat-diet fed Wistar rats.

BACKGROUND: It has been shown that irisin levels are reduced in skeletal muscle and plasma of obese rats; however, the effect of exercise training on irisin level remains controversial. We aim to evaluate the association of swimming exercise with serum irisin level and other obesity-associated parameters. METHODS: Forty healthy male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to 4 groups: a normal diet and sedentary group (ND group), normal diet and exercise group (NDE group), high-fat diet and sedentary group (HFD group), and high-fat diet and exercise group (HFDE group. After 8 consecutive weeks of

Limitations of body mass index and body fat percentage and waist-to-hip ratio in urologic cancers.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Body mass index (BMI) does not distinguish between adipose and lean mass or capture central adiposity. Patients with urologic malignancies differ in age and body composition, which may influence how BMI reflects true adiposity. We evaluated the concordance between BMI and alternative adiposity measures-body fat percentage (BF%) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR)-in a cohort of urologic cancers. METHODS: We analyzed 5,909 patients diagnosed with kidney cancer, prostate cancer, or bladder cancer who underwent surgery between 2017 and 2022 in a prospective registry. Body comp

Fat bodies responsible for the degradation of encapsulated foreign substances in the body cavity of Mythimna separata larvae.

In the immune systems of insects, the fat body synthesizes most of the immune proteins found in the hemolymph. We investigated a novel role for the fat body in immune processing of encapsulated parasitoid larvae using fat bodies from Mythimna separata (Ms) larvae. When first instar larvae of Cotesia kariyai (Ck) were transplanted into Ms larvae, time-dependent melanization and encapsulation occurred, and the surface area of Ck larvae began to decrease 24 h post-transplantation. Histological analysis revealed physical contact between encapsulated Ck larvae and the fat body of the host. In vitro…

Are Lean Body Mass and Fat-Free Mass the Same or Different Body Components? A Critical Perspective.

The 2-component molecular-level model dividing body mass into fat and fat-free mass (FFM) is a cornerstone of contemporary body composition research across multiple disciplines. Confusion prevails, however, as the term lean body mass (LBM) is frequently used interchangeably with FFM in scientific discourse. Are LBM and FFM the same or different body components? Captain Albert R. Behnke originated the LBM concept in 1942 and he argued that his "physiological" LBM component included "essential" fat or structural lipids whereas FFM is a chemical entity "free" of fat. Classical experimental animal

PBMC proteome is altered in children with high body fat percentage.

Obesity in children is an increasing public health issue. Excess adipose tissue, especially in the form of visceral obesity, is associated with poorer cardiometabolic health, persistent low-grade inflammation and oxidative stress. Mass-spectrometry based analysis of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) can reveal changes associated with dietary patterns, inflammatory diseases and obesity in adults. We aimed to identify proteomic dysregulations in PBMC of children with obesity, focusing on pathways linked to inflammation and metabolic dysfunction. We isolated cell lysate proteins from bloo

Analyzing cachectic phenotypes in the muscle and fat body of Drosophila larvae.

Drosophila has become a popular model for examining the metabolic wasting syndrome, cachexia, characterized by degradation of muscles and fat. Here we present a protocol for quick and consistent scoring of muscle detachment, fat body lipid droplet size, and extracellular matrix (ECM) quantifications in Drosophila larvae. We detail the procedures for dissecting, staining, and imaging third instar Drosophila larval muscle fillets and fat body, and how to utilize FIJI macros for robust quantification of cachectic phenotypes in these dissected tissues. For complete details on the use and execution…

Estimation of Body Fat Percentage for Clinical Pharmacokinetic Studies in Children.

Obesity is a prevalent childhood condition and the degree of adiposity appears likely to be an important covariate in the pharmacokinetics (PKs) of many drugs. We undertook these studies to facilitate the evaluation and, where appropriate, quantification of the covariate effect of body fat percentage (BF%) on PK parameters in children. We examined two large databases to determine the values and variabilities of BF% in children with healthy body weights and in those with obesity, comparing the accuracy and precision of BF% estimation by both clinical methods and demographically derived techniqu

Asprosin is associated with anorexia and body fat mass in cancer patients.

PURPOSE: Increasing evidence suggests that many adipokines are involved in cancer-related anorexia and cachexia syndrome (CACS), although the underlying mechanism remains to be clarify. Asprosin is a new peptide hormone mainly secreted by white adipose tissues that can increase appetite and body weight. In this cross-sectional study, we tested whether asprosin may intervene in the development of CACS. METHODS: The fasting plasma asprosin levels were determined via enzyme-linked immune-sorbent assay. Anorexia was determined using the anorexia/cachexia subscale (A/CS) of the functional assessme

Percent Body Fat Measurement in the Medical Management of Children with Obesity.

Sustaining weight loss can be challenging, as physiological responses to weight loss, including metabolic and hormonal adaptations and decreased energy expenditure, promote weight regain. Paired with sustained dietary changes, physical activity can promote weight maintenance after successful weight loss, as physical activity can help maintain fat-free mass. We present several illustrative cases to highlight the potential use of body composition measurement using a bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) scale to augment obesity management counseling in a tertiary care pediatric weight-managemen

Comparison of Morphology of Adipose Body of the Orbit and Subcutaneous Fat in Humans.

We compared histological structure of the orbital and subcutaneous adipose tissue. Quantitative morphometry showed that the mean diameter of adipocytes and their volume density in the orbital adipose tissue were significantly lower than in the subcutaneous fat, while volume density of vessels and elements of the connective tissue in the orbital adipose tissue was higher. Previously known and revealed here differences in the structure of orbital and subcutaneous adipose tissue do not answer the question, whether subcutaneous adipose tissue can be used for replacement of the orbital tissue defic

Differential relationships of hepatic and epicardial fat to body composition in HIV.

HIV-infected patients commonly experience changes in central and peripheral fat content as well as ectopic fat accumulation. However, whether hepatic and epicardial fat stores relate differentially to body composition or how these associations are modified by HIV status has not been well explored. A previously recruited sample of 124 HIV-infected patients and 58 healthy controls had undergone dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) and computed tomography (CT) from which body composition measures, liver-spleen ratio, and epicardial fat volume were obtained. Unique to the HIV-infected group, th

Body fatness, related biomarkers and cancer risk: an epidemiological perspective.

Higher body fatness is not only associated with a higher risk of hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and coronary heart disease but also with certain types of cancer. The scope of this review is to summarize the epidemiological evidence for an association between body fatness and specific types of cancer and to outline the mediating role of obesity-related biomarkers in this context. Epidemiological studies have gathered convincing evidence that greater body fatness is associated with a higher risk of colorectal cancer, postmenopausal breast cancer, endometrial cancer, esophageal adenocarcinoma, re

Body fat content and distribution and urinary risk factors for nephrolithiasis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Obesity is associated with a higher risk of nephrolithiasis. However, it is not known whether higher body fat mass or abnormal fat distribution influences stone risk independent of dietary factors. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, & MEASUREMENTS: In this cross-sectional study, non-stone-forming men with no known kidney disease and with a wide range of body weight collected a 24-hour urine specimen while consuming a fixed metabolic diet. They underwent dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry to assess body composition and fat distribution. Urinary risk factors for nephrolithi

Association of body fat with C-reactive protein in rheumatoid arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: The serum C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration is commonly used in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) as a surrogate marker of systemic inflammation, presumably induced by synovitis. However, other tissues, such as adipose tissue, can induce CRP production. This study was undertaken to explore the associations between measures of adiposity and CRP levels in RA. METHODS: One hundred ninety-six men and women with RA underwent anthropometric assessment and total body dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry for measurement of total and regional body fat and lean mass.
