Parasitoses of the intestinal tract are rare in Europe. Their diagnosis is difficult since the general symptoms are frequently only little pronounced or completely lacking. On the other hand, the course of the disease may be fatal. Such cases from the literature and our own observations are intended to call to memory the differential diagnosis of intestinal parasitosis.

A case is described of the death of a young female patient following the administration of a salt emetic after a relatively minor overdose of a proprietary analgesic containing aspirin. It is suggested that death occurred as a direct consequence of the salt ingestion and that the dangers of this method of inducing emesis should be more widely appreciated.

UNLABELLED: This paper is a retrospective analysis of data on 278 persons with fatal outcomes in traffic accidents in Osjecko--baranjska County, Croatia, during a five-year period. Isotretinoin is considered to be a safe and effective therapy in otherwise therapy-resistant acne. Elevated serum creatine phosphokinase values with or without muscle-related symptoms in isotretinoin-treated patients have been reported and interpreted as benign phenomena, lethal cases have not been described yet. We present the case of a 20-year-old male who died from severe generalised rhabdomyolysis associated with isotretinoin treatment.

Opportunistic invasive fungal infections are a major cause of mortality in immunocompromised patients. Early diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis and proper identification of the causative agent is crucial for guidance of therapy. Accurate differentiation of Aspergillus lentulus, a filamentous fungus often misidentified as atypical Aspergillus fumigatus, is of concern as multiple antifungal drugs show a reduced susceptibility. This is the first report, to our knowledge, of a proven pulmonary invasive fungal infection caused by A. lentulus after heart transplantation.

Schistosomiasis is one of the most common parasitic diseases, still considered of public health significance. Acute schistosomiasis is of difficult diagnosis and therefore has been overlooked, misdiagnosed, underestimated and underreported in endemic areas. The delay between the exposure to contaminated water and the initial symptoms may explain this challenging diagnosis. Hydatid disease HD is an endemic disease found in various regions of the world. The organs mostly affected are the liver and lung. Cardiac involvement in HD is rare. We report a case of preeclampsia presenting initially as a moderate hypertension, and complicated over a ten-day period by eclampsia, retinal hemorrhage, cerebral and hepatic subcapsular hematomas, HELLP syndrome, disseminated intravascular coagulation and renal failure.
