Unintended pregnancy as a predictor of child maltreatment.

Whereas child maltreatment research has developed considerable evidence on post-natal risk-factors, pre-natal circumstances have been largely overlooked. The circumstances surrounding a pregnancy may considerably impact the environment in which later parenting behaviors occur. This study examines one of the earliest potentially identifiable risk-factors for child maltreatment: the intentions of a pregnancy. Utilizing both mother and father reports, this study focuses on maltreatment risk, as it relates with both parents' perspectives of the pregnancy's intention. Drawing upon data from the Fra

Questions Matter: Investigating the Role of Caregiver Interactions in Children With Down Syndrome.

PURPOSE: Past research on interactions between parents and their children with Down syndrome (DS) has focused on mothers as the communication partner, despite fathers also frequently interacting with their children. This exploratory study examined mother and father question-asking behaviors during dyadic interactions with their children with DS and included preliminary observations of children's responsiveness to capture the bidirectional nature of interaction. METHOD: Participants included 15 children with DS (Mage = 39.67 months) and their biological parents. Each participant was administer

The evolving role of fathers of young deaf children in Turkey.

The present study aimed to explore the evolving role of fathers in the lives of young deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children and to construct a theory that explains this role within the Turkish context. The participants were 12 Turkish fathers of young DHH children. Using a constructivist grounded theory approach, theoretical data were collected over seven months through semi-structured interviews, supported by supplementary techniques including information forms, observations, documents, an artifact, and a reflective journal. The data were analyzed using constant comparative analysis and con

Father Loss and Child Telomere Length.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Father loss during childhood has negative health and behavioral consequences, but the biological consequences are unknown. Our goal was to examine how father loss (because of separation and/or divorce, death, or incarceration) is associated with cellular function as estimated by telomere length. METHODS: Data come from the 9-year follow-up of the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, a birth cohort study of children in 20 large American cities (N = 2420). Principal measures are as follows: salivary telomere length (sTL), mother reports of father loss, and poly

Investigating environmental links between parent depression and child depressive/anxiety symptoms using an assisted conception design.

OBJECTIVE: Links between maternal and offspring depression symptoms could arise from inherited factors, direct environmental exposure, or shared adversity. A novel genetically sensitive design was used to test the extent of environmental links between maternal depression symptoms and child depression/anxiety symptoms, accounting for inherited effects, shared adversity, and child age and gender. METHOD: Eight hundred fifty-two families with a child born by assisted conception provided questionnaire data. Mothers and fathers were genetically related or unrelated to the child depending on concep

Stress and child internalizing symptoms: Examining the moderating role of Latino fathers' warmth and support.

Latino immigrants within the United States experience various stressors, which have been linked to the development and exacerbation of internalizing symptoms among Latino youth. Therefore, it is crucial to explore factors that may buffer the impact of stress among immigrant families. Fathers may influence child outcomes through positive parenting behaviors, yet Latino fathers have been underrepresented in research. This study examined how paternal warmth and support may moderate the association between the accumulation of stress and child internalizing symptoms among low-income, Latino immigra

Low-income fathers are emotionally resilient: A qualitative exploration of paternal emotions across early parenting.

Emotions play an important role in fostering positive parenting and healthy child development. This qualitative study explored the affective experiences of racially diverse US fathers with low income across the prenatal, postnatal, and early childhood periods. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 24 fathers. Interview questions asked about fathers' early parenting experiences that elicit parenting emotions of different valence. Results from thematic analysis demonstrated activation of multiple emotions depending on different proximal and distal experiences. Specific to proximal exper

Types of fathering insufficiency and their association with children's emotional well being: a latent profile.

BACKGROUND: Father absence has become an increasingly concerning social issue. The physical absence of fathers often leads to a lack of paternal functioning, but the two are not entirely equivalent. Therefore, this study coined the term "fathering insufficiency" to describe insufficiency in paternal functioning. OBJECTIVE: This study had three objectives: (1) to identify the types of fathering insufficiency using latent profile analysis; (2) to explore the proportion of fathering insufficiency in different family structures; and (3) to compare differences in children's emotional well-being ac

Strengthening Evaluation Research: A Case Study of an Evaluability Assessment Conducted in a Carceral Setting.

Over the last decade, criminal justice scholars have increasingly endorsed "evidence-based practices"; however, some criminologists have voiced concerns over the varied methodological rigor used by evaluation researchers, differing definitions of evidence, and lack of critical exploration as to why programs may be (in)effective. This article argues that evaluability assessments (EAs) can answer these concerns. Through a case study of an EA used on a prison-based fatherhood program, this article demonstrates how EA's approach leads to a more precise understanding of outcome operationalization,

Rejunctive Moves Toward Systemic Healing: A Contextual Family Therapy Approach to Father's Absence.

The phenomena of father's absence and the disruption of a family unit due to social justice issues like incarceration and mental health/substance misuse challenges are widely documented, and their effects on the whole family are well established in the literature. This paper specifically examines how systemic inequities like racism contribute to destructive entitlements that can occur transgenerationally within families affected by father's absence. The consideration of racial trauma is crucial, as father's absence and family disruption are not limited to any one racial or ethnic group, but th

"When She Says Daddy": Black Fathers' Recidivism following Reentry from Jail.

We report on the findings of a mixed methods longitudinal study of 84 African American fathers of young children who were enrolled into the study during the father's jail stay. Participants were assessed using interviews, self-report measures, and administrative records on frequency of father-child contact, father-caregiver relationship quality, family support, paternal pre-incarceration employment, fathers' plans to live with the child upon reentry, history of substance abuse, and new convictions one year following release from jail. Qualitative analysis revealed three primary identities of f

PURPOSE: This is a longitudinal study of the precursors of sexual risk behavior among a cohort of adolescent children of HIV-positive and HI … substance use. Greater perceived environmental hostility (discrimination and victimization), a weak father-child relationship, and greater adolescent maladjustment and substance use had direct pathways to adolescent sexual risk behavior. Within-person Relations among Paternal and Maternal Child-oriented Perfectionism, Harsh Parenting, and Child Social Anxiety: A Five-wave Prospective Study.

While extant research has well established multiple familial risk factors for child social anxiety, scarce research has examined how parental child-oriented perfectionism may contribute to children’s social anxiety. This study tracked 2228 Chinese adolescents (baseline Mage = 12.95 ± 0.79 years, 46.3% girls) with five measurements over three years. Using the Random Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Model (RI-CLPM), results indicated that harsh fathering can predict subsequent fathers’ and mothers’ child-oriented perfectionism, but fathers’ and mothers’ child-oriented perfectionism fail to predict s

Dynamic associations between mothers' and fathers' parenting behaviors and infant physiological emotion regulation.

Emotion regulation (ER) is a key developmental process shaped through parent-infant interactions, during which parents and infants dynamically co-regulate the infant's emotions. Successful co-regulation depends on parents' sensitivity to the infant's emotional cues; unadjusted parental responses, such as intrusiveness or withdrawal, can dysregulate the infant, reflected in physiological indicators such as heart rate (HR). Although research has advanced understanding of infant ER, most studies have focused on mothers and dyadic contexts and primarily compared infant HR during stressful versus n

Health-related quality of life in parents of school-age children with Asperger Syndrome or High-Functioning Autism.

BACKGROUND: The estimated prevalence rate of Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD) in children is 6 per 1.000. Parenting children who are intellectually impaired and have PDDs is known to be linked to the impaired well-being of the parents themselves. However, there is still little available data on health-related quality of life (HRQL) in parents of children with Asperger Syndrome (AS) and High-Functioning Autism (HFA), or other PDD diagnoses in children of normal intelligence. The present study aimed to evaluate aspects of HRQL in parents of school-age children with AS/HFA and the correlat

Psychometric Properties of the Child-to-Parent Aggression Questionnaire in a Clinical Sample of Adolescents Who Abuse Their Parents: Prevalence and Gender Differences.

The main objective of this study was to validate the child-to-parent aggression questionnaire (CPAQ) in a clinical sample of adolescents who aggress against their parents. The second aim was to analyze the child-to-parent violence (CPV) prevalence and gender and age differences among these adolescents. The third aim was to analyze the frequency of CPV against mothers and fathers. The CPAQ was completed by 169 adolescents (49 girls) with a mean age of 16.26 years (SD = 1.56) who had committed CPV. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated a good model fit for four related factors (physical-aggress

Embryo donation parents' attitudes towards donors: comparison with adoption.

BACKGROUND: Embryo donation produces a family structure where neither rearing parent is genetically related to the child, as in adoption. It is not known how embryo donation parents view the donors compared with how adoptive parents view the birth parents. METHODS: 21 couples with an embryo donation child aged 2-5 years were compared with 28 couples with an adopted child. Parents were administered a semi-structured interview, assessing knowledge of the donors/birth parents, frequency of thoughts and discussions about the donors/birth parents and disclosure of the donor conception/adoption to
