Fatigue in Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD) have become increasingly recognized as central to the disease. These include somatic symptoms, such as pain and autonomic dysfunction (bladder dysfunction, constipation, dipahoresis and orthostatic hypotension) and behavioral problems, such as dementia, depression, fatigue, sleep disorders and psychosis. Research on fatigue has focused on its epidemiology with only a single report of a beneficial treatment trial, which used methylphenidate. AREAS COVERED: This review was made of all articles related to fatigue in Parkinson's disease…

[Fatigue in neuromuscular disease].

Chronic fatigue is a symptom of diseases such as cancer, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's and cerebrovascular disease. Fatigue can also be present in people with no demonstrable somatic disease. If certain criteria are met, chronic-fatigue syndrome may be diagnosed in these cases. Fatigue is a multi-dimensional concept with physiological and psychological dimensions. The 'Short Fatigue Questionnaire' consisting of 4 questions is a tool to measure fatigue with a high degree of reliability and validity. Within the group of neuromuscular disorders, fatigue has been reported by patients with post-p…

Chronic fatigue syndrome (cfs).

The Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is described based on the revision of Fukuda et al. The question "whether CFS can be discussed as a homogenous disorder?" has been reviewed and the answer is "no". Other overlapping syndromes are mentioned. Disorders with fatigue as a symptom are depression, somatisation, irritable bowel syndrome, effort-syndrome, hyperventilation, conservation-withdrawal. Among the pathogenetic factors of CFS immune systems disorders, neuroendocrine abnormalities, autonomic activity, neuroimaging, neuropsychological abnormalities, exercise capacity and muscle function and ps…

Fatigue in polio survivors.

OBJECTIVES: Fatigue is commonly reported among polio survivors. The aims of the present study were to examine the incidence of perceived fatigue among a sample of Norwegian polio survivors, and to examine the association between the level of fatigue and sociodemographic and health variables. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A mailed questionnaire containing, among others, Fatigue Questionnaire, Fatigue Severity Scale, sociodemographic and health variables were sent to a representative group of 312 Norwegian polio survivors. 276 subjects (88%) answered the questionnaire. RESULTS: The incidence of fatig…

[The chronic fatigue syndrome].

The chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) including myalgic encephalomyelitis and the postviral syndrome is a term used today to describe a not fully recognized disease characterized primarily by chronic or recurrent debilitating fatigue and various combinations of neuromuscular and neuropsychological symptoms. The term CFS has been introduced and defined by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta. Fatigue is one of the most common symptoms in medicine, but CFS as defined by CDC has appeared to be quite rare in the general population. Researchers have suggested that the syndrome is a heterog…

[Exertional dyspnea, fatigue, palpitations].

This 52-year old female patient suffered from exertional dyspnea, fatigue and palpitations progressive for some months. She had rheumatic fever in childhood. Physical examination and echocardiography revealed severe pure mitral regurgitation, invasive studies showed dilatation of the left atrium and ventricle, a regurgitant volume of 70% of the stroke volume and mitral valve replacement was performed.

Assessment of Vigilance and Fatigue.

This article summarizes the definitions of vigilance, fatigue, and sleepiness, as well as tools used in their assessment. Consideration is given to the strengths and limitations of the different subjective and objective tools. Future directions for research are also discussed, as well as the public health importance of continued investigation in this subject.

Fatigue in psoriasis with arthritis.

Patients have frequently described fatigue in association with chronic diseases, including cancer and a host of neurologic, metabolic, and psychiatric diseases. Fatigue can be influenced by factors such as the activity of the disease, medication, age, sex, and duration of symptoms. It presents a multidimensional influence with expression on physical, emotional, cognitive, and even social aspects of life. Fatigue also coexists and often interacts with other factors, including disturbance of mood, anemia, infections, fever, pain, sleep, and stress, making its evaluation complex. Psoriasis is a s…

Fatigue: implications for the elderly.

Sporadic and chronic fatigue are common, but an underlying etiology is identified in only up to 10% of cases. Under-reporting makes fatigue's prevalence unknown. Some estimate up to 50% of elders suffer from mild fatigue. Causes vary, but prevailing theory links most fatigue as a secondary consequence to illness and medication. Fatigue is prominently linked to sleep disorders, depression, heart disease, Parkinson's disease, anemia, and cancer. Fatigue and its consequences should be assessed routinely. Empiric treatment is the norm, focusing on managing fatigue, and, when possible, selecting ag…

Fatigue and the criminal law.

Fatigue is an increasingly recognised risk factor for transportation accidents. In light of this, there is the question of whether driving whilst fatigued should be a criminal offence. This paper discusses the current legal position, including the problems of voluntary conduct and self awareness. Three models for reform are proposed. The manner in which scientific research can inform legal consideration and future directions for research are discussed.

Fatigue and work in pregnancy.

Fatigue is a common complaint among women throughout pregnancy and during the postpartum period. It is suggested that there are physical, psychological, and situational factors predisposing a woman to fatigue during pregnancy. Several studies have attempted to correlate levels of fatigue with other variables. While many of these studies have noted an association between stress and fatigue related to work or home environment and the increased risk of antenatal morbidity, the mechanism of these effects is unclear. It is important for health care professionals, family members, and employers to re…

[The concepts of asthenia and fatigue].

Fatigue is one of the most common complaint of medicine and a very usual manner of communication between people. We must avoid to offer any reductionism. Fatigue is often related with physical and psychological symptoms. The inquiry is always difficult. Asthenia is a fatigue without or before effort. The world of the patient is subverted and we have to try to discover the meaning of this strange situation.

Fatigue: assess and address it.

Severe fatigue is highly prevalent in patients across different medical conditions and can only be partially explained by disease-specific factors. Also, fatigue is often seen by patients as one of the most disabling symptoms. Despite its substantial impact, fatigue is often not systematically discussed in clinical practice. Effective generic treatments exist for patients with severe fatigue. When fatigue is not assessed, patients may be withhold the opportunity to get advice on how to manage fatigue or receive effective interventions to achieve meaningful improvement. Therefore, designated he…

The deflection of fatigued neck.

The human neck is a unique mechanical structure, highly flexible but fatigue prone. The rising prevalence of neck pain and chronic injuries has been attributed to increasing exposure to fatigue loading in activities such as prolonged sedentary work and overuse of electronic devices. However, a causal relationship between fatigue and musculoskeletal mechanical changes remains elusive. This work aimed to establish this relationship through a unique experiment design, inspired by a cantilever beam mechanical model of the neck, and an orchestrated deployment of advanced motion-force measurement te…
