Calibrating your own fears: Feasibility of a remote fear conditioning paradigm with semi-subjective stimulus calibration and differences in fear learning.

Fear conditioning studies have occurred mostly in the laboratory, but recently researchers have started to adapt fear conditioning procedures for remote application. Standardization of aversive stimulus material not causing unnecessarily strong discomfort remains an issue especially relevant to research without experimental supervision. The present study introduces a novel semi-subjective method to calibrate aversive sounds in a remotely conducted fear conditioning paradigm. To demonstrate feasibility and proof of concept, 165 participants completed the paradigm, calibrating the loudness of an

Fear-Pleasure Paradox in Recreational Fear: Neural Correlates and Therapeutic Potential in Depression.

BACKGROUND: Recreational fear, voluntary exposure to frightening stimuli in safe contexts (eg, horror films), elicits both distress and pleasure. Although paradoxical enjoyment of fear has been documented in healthy populations, its neural and psychological mechanisms, and potential therapeutic value for depression, remain unclear. METHODS: In a mixed-methods design, Study 1 (N = 216) assessed psychological and physiological responses to standardized fear stimuli across a continuum of depressive symptoms, using heart rate variability, salivary cortisol, and validated self-report measures. Corticosterone enhances formation of non-fear but not fear memory during infectious illness.

INTRODUCTION: Survivors of critical illness are at high risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) but administration of glucocorticoids during the illness can lower that risk. The mechanism is not known but may involve glucocorticoid modulation of hippocampal- and amygdala-dependent memory formation. In this study, we sought to determine whether glucocorticoids given during an acute illness influence the formation and persistence of fear and non-fear memories from the time of the illness. METHODS: We performed cecal ligation and puncture in male and female mice to induce an acu

Offline tDCS modulates prefrontal-cortical-subcortical-cerebellar fear pathways in delayed fear extinction.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been studied to enhance extinction-based treatments for anxiety disorders. However, the field shows conflicting results about its anxiolytic effect and only a few studies have observed the extinction of consolidated memories. We looked to study the effect of offline 1 mA tDCS over the right dorsolateral pre-frontal cortex across the fear pathways, in consolidated fear response during delayed extinction. Participants (N = 34 women) underwent in a two-day fear conditioning procedure. On day 1, participants were assigned to the control group (N =

Medial or lateral orbitofrontal cortex activation during fear extinction differentially regulates fear renewal.

Some anxiety-related disorders, such as panic disorder, specific phobia, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), develop because of the poor regulation and inappropriate expression of fear-related behavior at the wrong place and wrong time. In clinical settings, exposure therapy, which consists of repeated presentation of trauma-related stimuli without real threats in the therapeutic context, is commonly used to treat these disorders. However, 30-50 % of patients suffer from the recurrence of anxiety symptoms after they leave the therapeutic context. Thi

Relating experimentally-induced fear to pre-existing phobic fear in the human brain.

While prior work has demonstrated that fear-conditioning changes the neural representation of previously neutral stimuli, it remains unknown to what extent this new representation abstracts away from specific fears and which brain areas are involved therein. To investigate this question, we sought commonalities between experimentally-induced fear via electric shocks and pre-existing phobia. Using functional MRI, we tested the effect of fear-conditioning pictures of dogs in 21 spider-fearful participants across three phases: baseline, post-conditioning, and extinction. Considering phobic stimul

Uplifting Fear Appeals: Considering the Role of Hope in Fear-Based Persuasive Messages.

Fear appeal research has focused, understandably, on fear as the primary emotion motivating attitude and behavior change. However, while the threat component of fear appeals associates with fear responses, a fear appeals' efficacy component likely associates with a different emotional experience: hope. Drawing from appraisal theories of emotion in particular, this article theorizes about the role of hope in fear appeals, testing hypotheses with two existing data sets collected within the context of sun safety messages. In both studies, significant interactions between hope and self-efficacy em

The fear of losing control.

Although a great deal of research has focused on various aspects of control and their relations to psychopathology, new insights and therapeutic potential could be revealed through an examination and perhaps emphasis on fears of losing control. Although elements of control-related beliefs and phenomena have been highlighted in association with obsessive-compulsive disorder and social anxiety disorder, this paper will give a fresh perspective on fears and beliefs about losing control, with implications for understanding and perhaps treating a broad range of psychological problems including pani

[Therapy of fear of flying].

Fear of flying is a widespread phenomenon and therefore, there is no clear-cut borderline between "normal" and "pathological" fear. People who seek help are those whose lives are severely affected by their avoidance behaviour. Fear of flying can be treated, and in particular, procedures for coping with fear, as developed in behavioural therapy are employed in the course of treatment. 'Systematic desensitization' is particularly suitable for dealing with specific flying phobia. 'Exposure according to the reaction management model' is indicated in the case of patients in whom fear of flying is a

Fear of flying: an overview.

Flying gives the aviator a sense of power and control. Aviators challenge their own skills and test the physical limitations of the plane. They must maintain the balance between fear and joy, sacrifice and love, and risks and rewards of flying in order to continue to fly without reservation. Flying is dangerous. The danger is both real and symbolic, generating fears and anxiety. Interpretation of fear of flying spans from the psychoanalytic-endogenous on one side to the behaviouristic-exogenous on the other side. Unless strictly understood, both models should be taken to consider the interacti

Duties, fears and physicians.

This article deals with the physician's fear of contagion using AIDS as a paradigm. It deals with this in four ways: it examines the concepts of duty, fear and courage in their medical setting; it deals with the historical aspects of the problem; it analyzes the role of social contract and professionalism; and it develops a viewpoint of the physician's obligation based on these considerations and predicated on a view of professionalism and social contract.

The child and the fear of death.

The central hypothesis of this paper is that the innate fear of death in the human being is universal and that the child, least of all, is immune to death fear and its symbolic representation. This cuts across all ages and developmental levels. This paper is not concerned with the empirical knowledge of death, an area that has been extensively explored by others such as Nagy (1948), Piaget (1929), and Anthony (1940).Examination of the child and his relationship to death is important in order to reach the truth and understand the human meaning of the fear of death. The child's conception of hims

How Do Patients' Fear Prediction and Fear Experience Impact Exposure-Based Therapy for Panic Disorder With Agoraphobia? A Comprehensive Analysis of Fear Prediction.

Expectancy violation has been proposed as a potential core mechanism of action in psychotherapy, particularly in exposure therapy for anxiety disorders. However, various relevant expectations have been discussed, and empirical studies examining their significance are still scarce. This study aimed to investigate one specific form of expectancy violation, based on Rachman's (1994) match-mismatch model, specifically by comparing expected and experienced fear and examining their relationship to safety behaviour during exposure in vivo in 268 patients meeting DSM-IV criteria for panic disorder wit
