Determining the feasibility of linked claims and vaccination data for a COVID-19 vaccine pharmacoepidemiological study in Germany-RiCO feasibility study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: In Germany, there has been no population-level pharmacoepidemiological study on the safety of the COVID-19 vaccines. One factor preventing such a study so far relates to challenges combining the different relevant data bodies on vaccination with suitable outcome data, specifically statutory health insurance claims data. Individual identifiers used across these data bodies are of unknown quality and reliability for data linkage. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: As part of a larger pharmacovigilance study on the COVID-19 vaccines, called RiCO (German 'Risikoevaluation der COVID-19-Impfstoffe

Development of an anthropomorphic phantom of the lower extremities for feasibility studies and verification of total-body irradiation.

BACKGROUND: Total-body irradiation (TBI) is a specialised radiotherapy treatment used alongside chemotherapy to prepare leukaemia patients for stem cell transplants. For commissioning and validation of conformal irradiation techniques, anatomically detailed phantoms of the whole body play an important role. This study aimed to create a cost-effective modular phantom of the lower extremities that can be combined with a commercial torso phantom, thus enabling the optimisation of TBI treatment planning and dose delivery. METHODS: We designed a modular leg phantom consisting of five key component

Safety and Feasibility of Lumbar Cerebrospinal Fluid Pressure and Intraspinal Pressure Studies in Cervical Stenosis: A Case Series.

INTRODUCTION: Degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) leads to functional impairment by compression of the spinal cord and nerve roots. In DCM, the dynamics of cerebrospinal fluid pressure (CSFP) and intraspinal pressure (ISP), as well as spinal cord perfusion pressure (SCPP) remain not investigated yet. Recent technical advances have enabled investigation of these parameters in acute spinal cord injury (SCI). We aim to investigate the properties of CSFP/ISP and spinal cord hemodynamics during and after decompressive surgery in DCM. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four patients with DCM were enrolled;

Sample Size Determination for Pilot Studies Based on Event Thresholds: A Framework for Evaluating Feasibility of Research Processes.

BACKGROUND: Pilot studies are essential for assessing feasibility and operational processes before large-scale research. This study presents a Poisson-based framework for determining the minimum pilot sample size based on discrete event thresholds. METHODS: The number of events represents occurrences such as errors, deviations, or missing data that indicate whether a process is functioning as intended. Setting a maximum tolerable threshold for these events provides a clear decision rule for proceeding or refining study procedures. A Poisson-based model was applied for sample size calculation.

Transient deoxyhemoglobin formation as a contrast for perfusion MRI studies in patients with brain tumors: a feasibility study.

Background: Transient hypoxia-induced deoxyhemoglobin (dOHb) has recently been shown to represent a comparable contrast to gadolinium-based contrast agents for generating resting perfusion measures in healthy subjects. Here, we investigate the feasibility of translating this non-invasive approach to patients with brain tumors. Methods: A computer-controlled gas blender was used to induce transient precise isocapnic lung hypoxia and thereby transient arterial dOHb during echo-planar-imaging acquisition in a cohort of patients with different types of brain tumors (n = 9). We calculated relative

Feasibility of cardiac-based seizure detection and prediction: A systematic review of non-invasive wearable sensor-based studies.

A reliable seizure detection or prediction device can potentially reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with epileptic seizures. Previous findings indicating alterations in cardiac activity during seizures suggest the usefulness of cardiac parameters for seizure detection or prediction. This study aims to examine available studies on seizure detection and prediction based on cardiac parameters using non-invasive wearable devices. The Embase, PubMed, and Scopus databases were used to systematically search according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysi

Feasibility of epidural temporal interference stimulation for minimally invasive electrical deep brain stimulation: simulation and phantom experimental studies.

Objective. Temporal interference stimulation (TIS) has shown the potential as a new method for selective stimulation of deep brain structures in small animal experiments. However, it is challenging to deliver a sufficient temporal interference (TI) current to directly induce an action potential in the deep area of the human brain when electrodes are attached to the scalp because the amount of injection current is generally limited due to safety issues. Thus, we propose a novel method called epidural TIS (eTIS) to address this issue; in this method, the electrodes are attached to the epidural s

Feasibility and safety of cervical biopsy sampling for mucosal immune studies in female sex workers from Nairobi, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: There is an urgent need to improve our understanding of the mucosal immuno-pathogenesis of HIV acquisition in the female genital tract, particularly in high-risk women such as female sex workers (FSWs). Cervical biopsy samples offer technical advantages over cytobrush sampling, but there are concerns that this might increase HIV acquisition, particularly if healing is slow and/or women do not abstain from sex during healing. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Cervical biopsy samples and cervico-vaginal swabs for co-infection diagnostics, prostate specific antigen (PSA) and immune stu
