OBJECTIVE: Cervical length (CL) of 3 cm or greater has been shown to have a 97-99% negative predictive value for preterm delivery in women with threatened preterm labor. Consequently, hospitalization and treatment are not indicated in these patients. We analyzed how often patients with a CL of 3 cm or greater are still being admitted and treated for preterm labor and how much this contributes to the economic burden of preterm labor hospitalizations.

Prospective payment systems using the diagnostic related group (DRG) mechanism are being phased in for Medicare inpatient hospital care. The purpose of this study was to examine a common neurosurgical procedure (001), craniotomy without trauma, and characterize the cost dynamics of this DRG. BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Pectus excavatum is a common chest wall deformity, and several procedures have been developed for its correction. We allow patients to choose among Leonard, Nuss, and Ravitch procedures. This study aimed to determine which procedure most patients select and the resultant outcomes.
METHODS: Charts were reviewed of all pectus excavatum repairs performed for 4 years by a practice covering a university-based children's hospital. Procedure choice, operative time, length of stay, analgesia, fees, and complications were recorded.

The health insurance system in Japan is compared to the U.S. system from a neurosurgeon's perspective. The Japanese entire population is enrolled in mandatory health insurance without choice based on employment and residence, called "Health-insurance-for-all." Elderly Health Insurance for senior people aged 70 years or older is set within each health organization. As the relative financial conditions are variable among health insurance organizations, financial adjustment is done. The medical fee is set for all the procedures and products that are paid by health insurance which sets the prices.

Potential business losses incurred vaccinating adults against influenza have not been defined because of a lack of estimates for medical practice costs incurred delivering vaccines. We collected data on vaccination labor time and other associated expenses. We modeled estimates of per-vaccination medical practice business costs associated with delivering adult influenza vaccine in different sized practices. The monthly Medicare Part A premium for the 12 months beginning January 1, 1999 for these individuals is $309, the same as in 1998. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate pregnancy complication rates and related charges in users of 84/7, 21/7 and 24/4 combined oral contraceptives (COCs).
STUDY DESIGN: Data were obtained from the i3 InVision Data Mart™ retrospective claims database. Subjects were aged 15-40 years, first prescribed a COC between 1/1/2006 and 4/1/2011 and continuously insured for ≥1 year. 84/7 users were matched 1:1 to 21/7 and 24/4 users.
RESULTS: Pregnancy-related complication rates and associated charges were significantly lower with 84/7 vs. 21/7 and 24/4 regimens.

An economic model for determining whether vaccination against a disease would be beneficial financially on individual farms is proposed; it is based on four pieces of information: the costs of a disease case including its treatment, the cost of vaccinating each animal including veterinary fees, the expected incidence of the disease, and the efficacy of the vaccine. BACKGROUND: The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic raised an immediate need for remote access to health care. Danish policymakers therefore introduced fees for remote contacts in general practice.
