Si-H Bond Activation and Dehydrogenative Coupling of Silanes across the Iron-Amide Bond of a Bis(amido)bis(phosphine) Iron(II) Complex.

Despite the utility of Si-Si bonds, there are relatively few examples of Si-Si bond formation by base metals. In this work, a four-coordinate iron complex, (PNNP)FeII, is shown to strongly activate the Si-H bonds in primary silanes across the Fe-amide bonds in a metal-ligand cooperative fashion. Upon treatment with excess silane, Si-Si dehydrogenative homocoupling is shown to occur across the Fe-Namide bond without concomitant oxidation and spin state changes at the Fe center.

Rates and Mechanism of Vivianite Dissolution under Anoxic Conditions.

The iron phosphate mineral vivianite Fe(II)3(PO4)2·8H2O has emerged as a potential renewable P source. Although the importance of vivianite as a potential P sink in the global P cycle had previously been recognized, a mechanistic understanding of vivianite dissolution at the molecular level, critical to its potential application, is still elusive. The potential of vivianite as a P sink or source in natural or engineered systems is directly dependent on its dissolution kinetics under environmentally relevant conditions. To understand the thermodynamic and kinetic controls on bioavailability, th

Selenide [Se(-II)] Immobilization in Anoxic, Fe(II)-Rich Environments: Coprecipitation and Behavior during Phase Transformations.

The radionuclide selenium-79 (Se-79) is predicted to be a key contributor to the long-term radiologic hazards associated with geological high-level waste (HLW) repositories; hence its release is of pertinent concern in the safety assessment of repositories. However, interactions of reduced Se species with aqueous Fe(II) species and solid phases arising from the corrosion of a steel overpack could play a role in mitigating its migration to the surrounding environment. In this study, we examined the immobilization mechanisms of Se(-II) during its interaction with aqueous Fe(II) and freshly preci

Quantitative Assessment of Ligand Substituent Effects on σ- and π-Contributions to Fe-N Bonds in Spin Crossover FeII Complexes.

The effect of para-substituent X on the electronic structure of sixteen tridentate 4-X-(2,6-di(pyrazol-1-yl))-pyridine (bppX ) ligands and the corresponding solution spin crossover [FeII (bppX )2 ]2+ complexes is analysed further, to supply quantitative insights into the effect of X on the σ-donor and π-acceptor character of the Fe-NA (pyridine) bonds. EDA-NOCV on the sixteen LS complexes revealed that neither ΔEorb,σ+π (R2 =0.48) nor ΔEorb,π (R2 =0.31) correlated with the experimental solution T1/2 values (which are expected to reflect the ligand field imposed on the iron centre), but that ΔE

PioABC-Dependent Fe(II) Oxidation during Photoheterotrophic Growth on an Oxidized Carbon Substrate Increases Growth Yield.

Microorganisms that carry out Fe(II) oxidation play a major role in biogeochemical cycling of iron in environments with low oxygen. Fe(II) oxidation has been largely studied in the context of autotrophy. Here, we show that the anoxygenic phototroph, Rhodopseudomonas palustris CGA010, carries out Fe(II) oxidation during photoheterotrophic growth with an oxidized carbon source, malate, leading to an increase in cell yield and allowing more carbon to be directed to cell biomass. We probed the regulatory basis for this by transcriptome sequencing (RNA-seq) and found that the expression levels of t

Unprotected amine transfer performed by non-heme iron(II) complexes.

Direct amination of C-H or CC bonds using unprotected amino groups is very challenging, especially with earth abundant metal ions. Here we show that a bioinspired iron(II) complex catalyses the double amination of its dangling benzyl branch in the presence of hydroxylamine derivatives as the unprotected amine donor and that the replacement of the benzyl branch by a methyl group also allows the aziridination of styrene.

Oligo-heterotrophic Activity of Marinobacter subterrani Creates an Indirect Fe(II) Oxidation Phenotype in Gradient Tubes.

Autotrophic bacteria utilizing Fe(II) as their energy and electron sources for growth affect multiple biogeochemical cycles. Some chemoheterotrophic bacteria have also been considered to exhibit an Fe(II) oxidation phenotype. For example, several Marinobacter strains have been reported to oxidize Fe(II) based on formation of oxidized iron bands in semi-solid gradient tubes that produce opposing concentration gradients of Fe(II) and oxygen. While gradient tubes are a simple and visually compelling method to test for Fe(II) oxidation, this method alone cannot confirm if, and to what extent, Fe(I

Stabilization of U(V) and U(VI) in Goethite Formed by Recrystallization of Fe-Oxyhydroxysulfates.

Schwertmannite and jarosite are naturally occurring iron (Fe) oxyhydroxysulfates with strong sorption capacities for hexavalent uranium [U(VI)] in various acidic sulfate-rich environments. These metastable minerals commonly undergo recrystallization, particularly in the presence of dissolved Fe2+ [Fe(II)aq], which may influence the fate of associated U(VI). Here, we quantified molecular-level changes in U repartitioning and speciation when U(VI)-sorbed schwertmannite and jarosite reacted with Fe(II)aq under near-neutral and anaerobic conditions over 2 weeks. The results show that Fe(II)aq addi

Investigating the performance of susceptibility-weighted images in Fricke gel dosimeter reading and optimizing the related imaging parameters.

Fricke gel dosimeters are especially useful in small-field dosimetry and validation of treatment delivery in three-dimensional space with features such as tissue equivalence, non-toxicity, high spatial resolution, non-dependence on energy, and dose rate. The use of basic Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) protocols (T1- and T2-Weighted) for reading Fricke gel dosimeters has always been considered the dominant method in many studies. However, the development and application of advanced MRI techniques for more accurate readings of Fricke gel dosimeters can be useful. Considering that in the main s

Transferring network analysis to the study of potential biogeochemical interactions of phosphorus-relevant elements in floodplain subsoils - A new use case for the Soilscape Network Approach (SNAp).

Subsurface phosphorus (P) loss from deep P stocks in floodplain subsoils can contribute to eutrophication of freshwaters. To date, knowledge on the complex biogeochemical interactions of P in floodplain subsoils is too scarce to enable targeted P management to mitigate subsurface P loss from deep P stocks. We propose using graph theory and the Soilscape Network Approach (SNAp) based on correlations between P-relevant elements to study these complex biogeochemical interactions in the soilscape. Complex interactions of several elements in soils are difficult to investigate from a holistic perspe

Self-regenerable bio-hybrid with biogenic ferrous sulfide nanoparticles for treating high-concentration chromium-containing wastewater.

Biogenic ferrous sulfide nanoparticles (bio-FeS) as low-cost and green-synthesized nanomaterial are promising for heavy metals removal, but the need for complicated extraction, storage processes and the production of iron sludge still restrict their practical application. Here, a self-regenerable bio-hybrid consisting of bacterial cells and self-assembled bio-FeS was developed to efficiently remove chromium (Cr(VI)). A dense layer of bio-FeS was distributed on the cell surface and in the periplasmic space of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, endowing the bacterium with good Cr(VI) tolerance and unus

From Dimeric to Octameric Metallo-Supramolecular Macrocycles Based on Sterically Congested Ligand-assisted Self-Assembly with Zn(II), Cd(II), and Fe(II).

Two sterically congested 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine-based ligands LA and LB, composed of asymmetrically contiguous terpyridine units, are designed and synthesized for metallo-supramolecular architectures. The significant advantage of this design is that the terpyridines in these ligands have different chemical environments and show a selective coordination ability with each other. For ditopic ligand LA, the self-assembly with Zn(II), Cd(II), and Fe(II) gave the rhombic dimers, which have the same sets of terpyridine signals as ligand LA. The self-assembly behavior of tritopic ligand LB with Cd(II)

The Effects of Phosphonate-Based Scale Inhibitor on Brine-Biotite Interactions under Subsurface Conditions.

To explore the effects of scale inhibitors on subsurface water-mineral interactions, here batch experiments on biotite dissolution (0-96 h) were conducted in solutions containing 0-1.0 mM diethylenetriaminepenta(methylene)phosphonate (DTPMP, a model scale inhibitor), at conditions simulating subsurface environments (95 °C and 102 atm CO2). The phosphonate groups in DTPMP enhanced biotite dissolution through both aqueous and surface complexations with Fe, with more significant effects at a higher DTPMP concentration. Surface complexation made cracked biotite layers bend, and these layers detach

Synthesis, characterization, and binding affinity of hydrosulfide complexes of synthetic iron(II) porphyrinates.

The binding and reactivity of the hydrosulfide ion (HS-) to iron(II) porphyrinates has been examined for several synthetic meso-tetraphenylporphine (TPP) derivatives. In all cases, HS- coordinates to the iron centers in a 1:1 stoichiometry with formation constants (Kf) that reflect the electronic characteristics of the porphyrinate ligands. In the case of the F8TPP ligand (F8TPP=dianion of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(2,6-difluorophenyl)porphine), an intermediate complex proposed as the hydrosulfide bridged dimer, (Bu4N)[Fe2(μ-SH)(F8TPP)2], was identified by NMR spectroscopy en route to formation of (B

A new spectrophotometric method for measuring ceruloplasmin ferroxidase activity: an innovative approach.

Ferroxidases are enzymes that participate in the iron metabolism of different organisms. They catalyze the oxidation of ferrous iron, Fe2⁺, into ferric iron, Fe3⁺, which is essential in iron homeostasis and physiological functioning. The present study describes a novel spectrophotometric method of serum ceruloplasmin ferroxidase activity. This method is easy to perform; it is also sensitive, specific, and rapid. In this method, ferrous ions are used as a substrate for the enzyme, with either salicylic acid or sulfosalicylic acid being taken as a chromogenic compound. These chromogens easily fo

Fenton degradation of 4,6-dinitro-o-cresol with Fe(2+)-substituted ion-exchange resin.

The Fenton degradation of 4,6-dinitro-o-cresol (DNOC) was studied under different experimental conditions using Amberlyst 15 ion-exchange resin containing ferrous ion. DNOC was found to be effectively degraded under most conditions, and it was observed that, with the addition of HCl, the desorption of ferrous ion from the resin into the solution played a major role in this degradation. The total iron concentration in the reaction solution was found to increase with the addition of HCl, and a pseudo-first-order kinetic model was applied to the desorption of ferrous ion from the resin on the bas
