Infertility burden among women firefighters: a cross-sectional exploratory analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Despite biological and environmental plausibility, risk factors for infertility have not yet been studied among female firefighters. In this exploratory analysis, we investigated the burden of infertility among a subset of US firefighters enrolled in the Health and Wellness of Women Firefighters Study. METHODS: Women firefighters enrolled in the study responded to surveys administered in 2017 and 2019, reporting on their work environment, reproductive health, infertility history and fertility treatment history among those with infertility. Demographics and reproductive history of

Differential metabolic profiles by Hispanic ethnicity among male Tucson firefighters.

INTRODUCTION: Firefighters face regular exposure to known and probable human carcinogens, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), benzene, and formaldehyde, leading to an increased risk of various cancers compared to the general population. Hispanic and black firefighters are at increased risk of additional cancers not elevated in non-Hispanic white firefighters, yet biological pathways underlying these differences are unknown. OBJECTIVES: The study objectives were to evaluate differences in the urinary metabolome between Hispanic and non-Hispanic firefighters, pre-and post-firegroun

Cancer risk and mortality among firefighters: a meta-analytic review.

BACKGROUND: Firefighting is a hazardous occupation that is associated with an increased risk of select cancers. The number of studies has grown in recent years allowing for a synthesis of findings. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, multiple electronic databases were searched to identify studies on firefighter cancer risk and mortality. We computed pooled standardized incidence risk (SIRE) and standardized mortality estimates (SMRE), tested for publication bias, and conducted moderator analyses. RESULTS: Thirty-eight studies published between 1978 and March 2022 were included for final me

Duty-related trauma and PTSD symptoms in US urban firefighters.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the multi-dimensional nature of traumatic duty-related events encountered by firefighters in relation to their post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) risk. AIMS: To describe the types of duty-related events encountered by career firefighters and explore if years in the fire service or total event load moderated the association of trauma exposure to PTSD symptoms. METHODS: Participants included 755 career, male firefighters (19% of the department's firefighters and 76% of those who accessed the electronic anonymous survey). The Duty-Related Incident Stressors

Workers' compensation injury claims among firefighters in Ohio, 2001-2017.

BACKGROUND: Firefighters are at high risk for nonfatal and fatal occupational injuries. While some past research has quantified firefighter injuries using various data sources, Ohio workers' compensation injury claims data largely have not been used. METHODS: Public and private firefighter claims, including volunteer and career firefighters, from Ohio's workers' compensation data for 2001-2017 were identified based on occupational classification codes and manual review of the occupation title and injury description. The task during injury (firefighting, patient care, training, other/unknown,

Cancer risk among firefighters and police in the Ontario workforce.

OBJECTIVE: Firefighters and police often work in high-stress, complex environments with known and suspected carcinogenic exposures. We aimed to characterise cancer incidence among firefighters and police. METHODS: The Occupational Disease Surveillance System (ODSS) was used to identify workers employed as firefighters or police in Ontario. A cohort of workers were identified using lost-time workers' compensation claims data and followed for cancer in the Ontario Cancer Registry (1983-2020). Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate HRs and 95% CIs for primary site-specific cancer d

Clinical Course of Sarcoidosis in World Trade Center-Exposed Firefighters.

BACKGROUND: Sarcoidosis is believed to represent a genetically primed, abnormal immune response to an antigen exposure or inflammatory trigger, with both genetic and environmental factors playing a role in disease onset and phenotypic expression. In a population of firefighters with post-World Trade Center (WTC) 9/11/2001 (9/11) sarcoidosis, we have a unique opportunity to describe the clinical course of incident sarcoidosis during the 15 years postexposure and, on average, 8 years following diagnosis. METHODS: Among the WTC-exposed cohort, 74 firefighters with post-9/11 sarcoidosis were iden

Registry-based case-control study of cancer in California firefighters.

BACKGROUND: There is no consensus whether firefighters are at increased cancer risk for particular cancers. Previous studies have been small, mostly investigated cancer mortality, and suggested increased risks for brain, bladder, testicular, prostate, thyroid and colo-rectal cancers, leukemia, and melanoma. METHODS: Records of all male cancers registered in California during 1988-2003 were obtained. Firefighters were identified from occupation and industry text fields. Logistic regression analysis used other cancers as controls. RESULTS: Of the 804,000 eligible records, 3,659 had firefightin

Fatalities among volunteer and career firefighters--United States, 1994-2004.

Approximately 800,000 firefighters in the United States are volunteer firefighters and 300,000 are career firefighters. Volunteer firefighters primarily serve communities with fewer than 25,000 inhabitants, whereas most career firefighters serve communities of more than 25,000 persons. To characterize fatalities among volunteer and career firefighters, CDC analyzed data from the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA). This report summarizes the results of that analysis and, to illustrate the most common types of volunteer and career firefighter fatalities, describes two cases investigated by the Nati

Admiration and motivation: key factors in managing PTSD among firefighters.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) presents a significant challenge for firefighters. While research suggests that admiration may have a positive impact on individual psychological well-being, its specific influence on PTSD among firefighters remains unexplored. This study aims to investigate the association between admiration, motivation (both internal and external), and PTSD in a sample of 2156 firefighters in order to identify effective coping strategies for managing PTSD in this population. The findings indicate a statistically significant inverse relationship between admiration and PTS
