Twenty thousand fishes under the seas: Insights into the collection and storage of trematodes from the examination of 20,000 fishes in the tropical Indo west-Pacific.

The techniques employed to collect and store trematodes vary between research groups, and although these differences are sometimes necessitated by distinctions in the hosts examined, they are more commonly an artefact of instruction. As a general rule, we tend to follow what we were taught rather than explore new techniques. A major reason for this is that there are few technique papers in the published literature. Inspired by a collaborative workshop at the Trematodes 2024 symposium, we outline our techniques and processes for collecting adult trematodes from fishes and discuss the improvemen…

A regional study of the zoonotic broad tapeworm Dibothriocephalus spp. in Northwestern Patagonia (Argentina): origin of fishes and coastal cities as factors affecting infection in fishes.

Diphyllobothriosis was first recorded in humans in Argentina in 1892 and in introduced salmonids in 1952. The aim of this work is to assess factors influencing the values of prevalence and abundance of plerocercoids in fishes that could increase the risk of transmission of Dibothriocephalus spp. in Andean Patagonian lakes. We analysed two key issues potentially related to the occurrence of tapeworms in fish: the presence of cities on coastlines (as potential sources of eggs to nearby lakes) and the difference between native and exotic fishes in susceptibility to infection. We investigated the …

An overview of fish bioacoustics and the impacts of anthropogenic sounds on fishes.

Fishes use a variety of sensory systems to learn about their environments and to communicate. Of the various senses, hearing plays a particularly important role for fishes in providing information, often from great distances, from all around these animals. This information is in all three spatial dimensions, often overcoming the limitations of other senses such as vision, touch, taste and smell. Sound is used for communication between fishes, mating behaviour, the detection of prey and predators, orientation and migration and habitat selection. Thus, anything that interferes with the ability o…

Fish-allergic patients may be able to eat fish.

Reported fish allergy prevalence varies widely, with an estimated prevalence of 0.2% in the general population. Sensitization to fish can occur by ingestion, skin contact or inhalation. The manifestations can be IgE or non-IgE mediated. Several fish allergens have been identified, with parvalbumins being the major allergen in various species. Allergenicity varies among fish species and is affected by processing or preparation methods. Adverse reactions after eating fish are often claimed to be 'allergy' but could be a reaction to hidden food allergen, fish parasite, fish toxins or histamine in

Multiplex-FISH (M-FISH): technique, developments and applications.

Multiplex FISH (M-FISH) represents one of the most significant developments in molecular cytogenetics of the past decade. Originally designed to generate 24 colour karyotyping, the technique has spawned many variations and an equally diverse range of applications. In tumour and leukaemia cytogenetics, the two groups that have been targeted represent both ends of the cytogenetic spectrum: those with an apparently normal karyotype (suspected of harbouring small rearrangements not detectable by conventional cytogenetics) and those with a complex aberrant karyotype (which are difficult to karyotyp

[Mercury, fish, fish oil and the risk of cardiovascular disease].

BACKGROUND: Several clinical studies have documented that intake of fish may reduce mortality from coronary heart disease, and two epidemiological investigations have shown a 50% reduction in the incidence of sudden death and of "primary cardiac arrest" in subjects eating fish. However, in some studies no beneficial effects of fish intake on coronary heart disease could be found; one Finnish study even found a positive correlation between intake of freshwater fish and coronary heart disease. One possible explanation for this paradox could be a high content of mercury in fish. MATERIAL AND MET

Fish Allergy: Fishing for Novel Diagnostic and Therapeutic Options.

Fish allergy is one of the most common food allergies. The currently recommended treatment commonly consists of avoiding all fish species. Recent literature suggests that these recommendations are overprotective for the majority of fish-allergic patients. This review summarizes recent findings and provides practical information regarding management of fish allergy in the individual patient. After precise history taking supported by additional specific IgE measurements and/or skin prick tests, fish-allergic patients can generally be categorized into the following clinical clusters: (A) poly-sen

Biogenic amines in fish, fish products and shellfish: a review.

Fish, cephalopods and shellfish provide a healthy source of high-quality proteins, essential vitamins, minerals and polyunsaturated fatty acids. The beneficial effects of fish consumption on human health such as protection against coronary heart disease and certain cancer may be offset by fish decomposition and the formation of chemical contaminants such as biogenic amines. There are several toxicological effects of biogenic amines on humans, especially histamine. It is the causative agent of histamine or scombroid fish poisoning which is a significant public health problem. In individuals wit

Functional and Trophic Structuring of Micronektonic Fishes in the Northeast Atlantic.

In pelagic ecosystems, sharp vertical gradients in resources and environmental conditions structure species adaptations, interactions and community assembly. Yet, the ecological mechanisms underlying these patterns remain poorly resolved. To investigate the functional and trophic structure of micronektonic fishes, specimens were collected across the epipelagic (0-200 m) and mesopelagic layers (200-1300 m) using a midwater trawl. A functional analysis of 85 species, characterized by 10 categorical traits, was conducted to define functional groups, identify key ecological trade-offs among them a…

Two new species of Cacatuocotyle (Monopisthocotyla: Dactylogyridae) from Neotropical characiform fishes.

Two new species of Cacatuocotyle are described from characiform fishes from the upper Paraná River basin, Brazil: Cacatuocotyle fluvialis n. sp. from the skin of Psalidodon bockmanni (Characiformes, Acestrorhamphidae) and Cacatuocotyle calicata n. sp. from the gills of Bryconamericus iheringii (Characiformes, Stevardiidae). Cacatuocotyle fluvialis n. sp. can be distinguished from most of its congeners mainly by the morphology of the male copulatory organ (MCO), with clockwise rings, accessory piece, and sclerotized structures of the haptor. Cacatuocotyle calicata n. sp. differs from other cong…

Histopathology of laboratory-reared Nothobranchius fishes: Mycobacterial infections versus neoplastic lesions.

Short-lived killifishes of the genus Nothobranchius Peters, 1868 (Cyprinodontiformes) are considered promising model organisms for biomedical research on ageing and tumorigenesis. We conducted histopathological analysis of 411 adult individuals from three Nothobranchius species to study details on spontaneous age-related neoplastic lesions. Light microscopy based on H&E and toluidine blue-stained sections revealed (a) non-proliferative liver changes with pronounced vacuolation of hepatocytes; (b) proliferation of kidney haemopoietic tissue contributing to excretory system damage; (c) prolifera…

Pre-oral gut contributes to facial structures in non-teleost fishes.

Despite the wide variety of adaptive modifications in the oral and facial regions of vertebrates, their early oropharyngeal development is c … r expansion of the foregut endoderm. Here we present evidence that in embryos of extant non-teleost fishes, oral (stomodeal) formation is preceded by the development of prominent pre-oral gut diverticula (POGD) between the forebrain and roof of the forming mouth. Micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) imaging of bichir, sturgeon and gar embryos revealed th …

Investigating functional redundancy versus complementarity in Hawaiian herbivorous coral reef fishes.

Patterns of species resource use provide insight into the functional roles of species and thus their ecological significance within a community. The functional role of herbivorous fishes on coral reefs has been defined through a variety of methods, but from a grazing perspective, less is known about the species-specific preferences of herbivores on different groups of reef algae and the extent of dietary overlap across an herbivore community. Here, we quantified patterns of redundancy and complementarity in a highly diverse community of herbivores at a reef on Maui, Hawaii, USA. First, we trac…

Prehensile and non-prehensile tails among syngnathid fishes: what's the difference?

All syngnathid fishes are characterized by a tail with a vertebral column that is surrounded by dermal Plates - four per vertebra. Seahorses and pipehorses have prehensile tails, a unique characteristic among teleosts that allows them to grasp and hold onto substrates. Pipefishes, in contrast, possess a more rigid tail. Previous research (Neutens et al., 2014) showed a wide range of variation within the skeletal morphology of different members in the syngnathid family. The goal of this study is to explore whether the diversity in the three-dimensional (3D) shape of different tail types reflect…

Microsporidian parasites: a danger facing marine fishes of the Red Sea.

Out of 600 marine fish from the Red Sea belonging to three different species that were collected and examined for microsporidian parasites, 87 (14.5%) fish were found to be infected. The infection was recorded as cysts or xenomas embedded in the gut epithelium and the peritoneal cavity of the three fish species. The highest percent of infection with microsporidian parasites was recorded in Saurida tumbil 19.5% (39/200) followed by Pagrus pagrus 15% (45/300) and the lowest percent of infection was recorded in Epinephelus chlorostigma 3% (three out of 100). After rupture of the cysts, the spores

Seasonality of reproduction and production in farm fishes, birds and mammals.

A very large majority of farm animals express seasonal variations in their production traits, thus inducing seasonal availability of fresh d … s and embryo survival), and also sexual behaviour. Among species of interest for animal production, fishes and birds are generally considered as more directly sensitive to external factors (mainly temperature in fish, photoperiod in birds). In all species, it is therefore advisable that artificial photoperiodic treatments consisting of extra-light during …

Isolation and experimental infection of free-living amebae in freshwater fishes.

Twenty-three species of fish from nine southeastern states were screened for the presence of small, free-living amebae. Organs from 11 species of fish contained amebae of the genera Acanthamoeba, Naegleria, and Vahlkampfia. Three strains of Acanthamoeba were injected into fish to determine infectivity and pathogenicity of the amebae. Strains used were an A. polyphaga MC-1 isolated from the spleen of a bass, the pathogenic A-5 strain of A. culbertsoni, and the pathogenic Lilly A-1 strain of A. culbertsoni. The MC-1 strain established systemic infections in many organs of the test fish. The 2 st
