SoftMatch: Comparing Scanpaths Using Combinatorial Spatio-Temporal Sequences with Fractal Curves.

Recent studies matching eye gaze patterns with those of others contain research that is heavily reliant on string editing methods borrowed from early work in bioinformatics. Previous studies have shown string editing methods to be susceptible to false negative results when matching mutated genes or unordered regions of interest in scanpaths. Even as new methods have emerged for matching amino acids using novel combinatorial techniques, scanpath matching is still limited by a traditional collinear approach. This approach reduces the ability to discriminate between free viewing scanpaths of two

Distance vergence adaptation is abnormal in subjects with convergence insufficiency.

It is well known that in convergence insufficiency (CI) prism adaptation is reduced in response to base-out (BO) prisms at near. There have also been some suggestions in the literature that adaptation is reduced at other distances as well. The present data show that in CI adaptation is not only reduced in response to BO at near, but also in response to base-in (BI) at near and for both BI and BO at distance. This raises the interesting question whether distance adaptation becomes reduced because of reduced near adaptation or whether these subjects have a generally reduced horizontal adaptation

Tonic vergence and vergence adaptation.

In the absence of an adequate visual stimulus, the eyes are typically converged by approximately 0.25 to 0.75 meter angles (MA). This vergence response (VR) was believed to reflect the level of tonic innervation to the extraocular muscles, and accordingly has been termed tonic vergence (TV). However, this estimation fails to consider the magnitude of the anatomical position of rest. The true typical value of TV is approximately 23 degrees. This paper will consider various aspects of this parameter, including both clinical and laboratory methods of measurement, and the relationship between TV a

Analysis of tonic and accommodative vergence disorders of binocular vision.

Tonic and accommodative vergence disorders of binocular vision are analyzed with separate methods. The center of symmetry and the associated phoria of forced duction fixation disparity curves are two criteria used for prismatic correction of tonic vergence disorders. The associated phoria is corrected physiologically when patients who have tonic disorders are able to develop prism adaptation with orthoptic exercises. Graphical methods are used to analyze accommodative disorders resulting from mutual interactions between accommodation and convergence. Graphic analysis illustrates that patients

Globe Fixation Caused by Intraocular Migration of an Orbital Floor Implant.

A 30-year-old male presented with diplopia 1 month after implantation of an orbital floor plate for a blowout fracture. The orbital plate was removed 3 months later, however, the fixation bar was left in place as it had migrated full thickness through the inferior oblique muscle, sclera, choroid, and retina. After 5 years of head tilt, the patient was referred to our department with a metallic intraocular foreign body visible in fundo and an important elevation deficit. CT imaging confirmed our clinical suspicion of a retained fixation bar. The extraocular part of the fixation bar was removed

Synostotic plagiocephaly causing pseudoparalysis of the superior oblique and ocular torticollis: report of a case with unique sensory findings.

PURPOSE: To report a case in which strabismus surgery did not eliminate the abnormal head posture although it did improve the vertical strabismus; and to consider the causes of this situation. CASE REPORT: The patient had a right eso-hypertropia and ocular torticollis to the left shoulder as a result of a right superior oblique mechanical deficiency, secondary to her craniosynostosis. A myectomy of the right inferior oblique muscle and a tucking procedure of the right superior oblique muscle were performed. Postoperatively, the abnormal head posture persisted, although strabismus surgery impr

Pilot study on the dynamic interactions between cardiac activity and corneal biomechanics during eye movements.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The study examines the relationship between ocular rotations and cardiovascular functions through detailed biomechanical analysis. The study documents specific patterns of ocular movements and their synchronization with cardiovascular activity, highlighting significant correlations. These findings provide a basis for understanding the opto-biomechanical interplay between ocular and cardiovascular dynamics. METHODS: Authors employed a custom-designed prototype, integrating a camera and numerical pulse oximeter, to analyze the right eyeballs of participants. The cornea

How to assess eye movements clinically.

Eye movements serve vision in orienting gaze toward an object of interest in order to place its image simultaneously on both foveas and in stabilizing gaze relative to the environment in order to maintain fixation on the object of interest, even in the case of body displacement. Disorders of eye movements can interfere with ocular alignment and/or monocular motility, and result in diplopia, which is the most common symptom. Eye movement disorders can also interfere with binocular motility without ocular misalignment and result in gaze palsy. Finally, disorders of eye movement can interfere wit

Fixational eye movements in Tourette syndrome.

Studies of saccadic eye movements in subjects with Tourette syndrome (TS) have provided additional evidence that there is a link between TS symptoms and deficits in fronto-striato-thalamic networks. These studies revealed impaired timing and inhibition of saccades. We compared fixational eye movements, such as microsaccades and ocular drifts, in subjects with TS and healthy controls. We measured horizontal and vertical eye positions with video-oculography in 14 subjects with Tourette syndrome. We found reduced microsaccade amplitude but increased time between adjacent microsaccades (intersaccad

The role of visual saliency for the allocation of attention: Evidence from spatial neglect and hemianopia.

Visual scanning and exploration of natural scenes not only depends on specific objects, but also on local features. Models of spatial attention propose that features such as orientation or colour are processed pre-attentively and in parallel. According to these models attention interferes at a later stage, where features are combined into a representation of visual saliency. Saliency is a good predictor of ocular fixations during scanning of static pictures. Here, we tested whether fixations of patients with left spatial neglect, hemianopia, or both can be predicted based on local image conten

Immaturity of the oculomotor saccade and vergence interaction in dyslexic children: evidence from a reading and visual search study.

Studies comparing binocular eye movements during reading and visual search in dyslexic children are, at our knowledge, inexistent. In the present study we examined ocular motor characteristics in dyslexic children versus two groups of non dyslexic children with chronological/reading age-matched. Binocular eye movements were recorded by an infrared system (mobileEBT®, e(ye)BRAIN) in twelve dyslexic children (mean age 11 years old) and a group of chronological age-matched (N = 9) and reading age-matched (N = 10) non dyslexic children. Two visual tasks were used: text reading and visual search. I

Poor binocular coordination of saccades in dyslexic children.

AIM: To examine the quality of binocular coordination of saccades in dyslexic children in single word reading and in a task requiring fixation of single LED. METHODS: Eighteen children with dyslexia (11.4 +/- 2 years old) and 13 non-dyslexic children of matched age were studied. Horizontal saccades from both eyes were recorded with a photoelectric system (Oculomotor-Bouis). RESULTS: Binocular coordination during and after the saccade in dyslexics is worse than that of non-dyslexic children; the disconjugacy does not depend on the condition. Moreover, dyslexics do not show the stereotyped pat

Video vision development assessment in diagnosis and documentation of microtropia.

BACKGROUND: Microtropia is under diagnosed in treated esotropia and in primary microtropia cases, where patients are young and uncooperative. METHOD: Video Vision Development Assessment (VVDA) testing, which we have developed and previously described, captures multiple video frames images (30 per second) of the Breuckner red reflection (from the ocular fundus, a test for strabismus and ocular media abnormalities) combined with eccentric photorefraction. This method allows the highly critical discrimination of minimally off axis fixation (abnormal) to be differentiated from true on axis fixati

Ocular surface injury after shoulder surgery in the beach-chair position.

PURPOSE: During shoulder surgery in the beach-chair position, head fixation can sometimes cause rare complications. The authors share their experience in treating ocular injury due to improper head fixation during surgery in the beach-chair position. METHODS: The study investigated consecutively 6075 patients who underwent shoulder surgery in the beach-chair position between March 2007 and March 2016, those patients who saw an ophthalmologist with a complaint of post-operative ocular discomfort. In the beach-chair position, surgery is performed with the patient's upper body raised by 70°. RE

Ocular lateropulsion in Wallenberg's syndrome: a prospective clinical study.

In order to evaluate the occurrence and clinical value of ocular lateropulsion in Wallenberg's syndrome, a prospective study was carried out. Lateropulsion of the horizontal and vertical refixation saccades was a rather regular finding, especially in complete Wallenberg's syndrome. Lateral ocular deviation after elimination of fixation was present in nearly all cases. The tonic lateral vector was always directed to the involved side. It is concluded that ocular lateropulsion is an easily elicited sign with a lateralizing value in lateral bulbar infarction. Further systematic search of ocular l

Anatomical correlates of ocular motor deficits in cerebellar lesions.

Humans are able to stabilize the images of moving targets on the retina by means of smooth pursuit eye movements. After the pontine level, all smooth pursuit pathways pass through the cerebellum. Previous animal studies gave evidence that two specific lesion sites within the cerebellum cause smooth pursuit disorders: those of the flocculus/paraflocculus and the vermis including lobule VI, VII, the uvula and the deep cerebellar nuclei. To date, there have been only a few lesion studies in patients with smooth pursuit disorders that do not allow direct comparison with a control group. In the pre

Eye-lens accommodation load and static trapezius muscle activity.

The purpose of this experimental study was to investigate if sustained periods of oculomotor load impacts on neck/scapular area muscle activity. The static trapezius muscle activity was assessed from bipolar surface electromyography, normalized to a submaximal contraction. Twenty-eight subjects with a mean age of 29 (range 19-42, SD 8) viewed a high-contrast fixation target for two 5-min periods through: (1) -3.5 dioptre (D) lenses; and (2) 0 D lenses. The target was placed 5 D away from the individual's near point of accommodation. Each subject's ability to compensate for the added blur was e
