Industrial fluoride pollution. Chronic fluoride poisoning in Cornwall Island cattle.

An aluminum plant on the south bank of the St. Lawrence river, southwest of Cornwall Island, Ontario, Canada, has emitted 0.816 metric tons of fluoride daily since 1973; considerably higher amounts were emitted from 1959 to 1973. The plant has been designated as the "major source of fluoride emissions impacting on Cornwall Island." Chronic fluoride poisoning in Cornwall island cattle was manifested clinically by stunted growth and dental fluorosis to a degree of severe interference with drinking and mastication. Cows died at or were slaughtered after the third pregnancy. The deterioration of c

In vitro Fluoride Uptake of Primary Teeth Treated with Different Fluoride Varnishes.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the fluoride concentration and surface smoothness of primary teeth treated with four different fluoride varnishes. METHODS: An in vitro experimental study was conducted with 50 primary teeth, divided into four groups (n = 10 per group). Each group (Group I: MI Varnish, Group II: Embrace Varnish, Group III: Fluor Protector, and Group IV: Duraphat) received consecutive fluoride varnishes. Fluoride concentration was measured at three depths (surface, middle, and deep) using microhardness testing. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA, followed by Tukey's post hoc test to a

Review on fluoride, with special emphasis on calcium fluoride mechanisms in caries prevention.

Low concentrations of fluoride have a beneficial effect on enamel and dentin de- and remineralization. After fluoride treatments, such as topical applications, rinses or dentifrices, salivary fluoride concentrations decrease exponentially in a biphasic manner to very low concentrations within a few hours. For treatments to be effective over periods longer than the brushing and the following salivary clearance, fluoride needs to be deposited and slowly released. Calcium fluoride (or like) deposits act in such a way, owing to a surface covering of phosphate and/or proteins, which makes the CaF2

Prevalence of enamel defects/fluorosis in fluoridated and non-fluoridated areas in Ireland.

Water fluoridation was introduced in Ireland in 1964 and in recent years the availability of fluoride from other sources had increased. As part of a National Survey of Children's Health in Ireland Dean's and the DDE indices were used to determine the prevalence of enamel fluorosis/defects in 8- and 15-yr-old children in fluoridated and non-fluoridated areas. Over 94% of the children examined in all areas were regarded as having normal enamel, as defined by Dean's index, the remainder showing evidence of either questionable, very mild or mild fluorosis. Between 52% and 63% of the children had o…

Effect of two sodium fluoride dentifrices on fluoride uptake and remineralization in situ.

Two dentifrices containing 1100 ppm F from sodium fluoride in silica bases were compared to a placebo dentifrice in an in situ remineralization and fluoride uptake study. Fifteen subjects brushed artificially-formed caries lesions in 60 thin enamel sections and 30 enamel blocks with each dentifrice in a double-blind, randomized, cross-over study design. Analysis of the thin sections by quantitative microradiography before and after exposure to toothbrushing showed that the fluoride dentifrices produced 18.3% and 7.1% remineralization whereas use of the placebo resulted in 10.3% demineralizatio

[Value of bone fluoride determination in osteoporotic patients treated with sodium fluoride].

In order to find out whether the response of osteoporosis to sodium fluoride treatment or complications arising from this treatment are related to the retention of fluoride in bones, we measured bone fluoride concentrations in 30 patients with primary osteoporosis who had been treated with sodium fluoride for 1 to 8 years. We found a significant correlation (r = 0.74, P less than 0.001) between bone fluoride concentration and total amount of fluoride ingested. However, with any given amount of sodium fluoride, the bone fluoride concentration could vary by up to three times from a patient to an

Longitudinal study of prevalence of enamel lesions in a fluoridated and non-fluoridated area.

The aim of this study was to examine longitudinally the effect of water fluoridation on the prevalence of enamel lesions in children 7-18 yr of age. 93 children in Tiel (1 ppm F-) and 103 children in Culemborg (0.1 ppm F-) were examined every other year at 7, 9, 11, 13 and 15 yr of age. A supplementary examination was carried out when these children reached the age of 18. Children in Tiel had access to water fluoridation from birth. The total number of lesions, including enamel lesions, on the buccal as well as on the occlusal surfaces was approximately the same in both areas in children 15 an…

Effect of water fluoridation on the development of medial vascular calcification in uremic rats.

Public water fluoridation is a common policy for improving dental health. Fluoride replaces the hydroxyls of hydroxyapatite, thereby improving the strength of tooth enamel, but this process can also occur in other active calcifications. This paper studies the effects of water fluoridation during the course of vascular calcification in renal disease. The effect of fluoride was studied in vitro and in vivo. Rat aortic smooth muscle cells were calcified with 2mM Pi for 5 days. Fluoride concentrations of 5-10 μM--similar to those found in people who drink fluoridated water--partially prevented cal…

Effects of fluoridation and disinfection agent combinations on lead leaching from leaded-brass parts.

This study concerns effects on water-borne lead from combinations of chlorine (CL) or chloramines (CA) with fluosilicic acid (FSA) or sodium fluoride (NaF). CL is known to corrode brass, releasing lead from plumbing devices. It is known that CA and CL in different ratios with ammonia (NH) mobilize copper from brass, which we have found also enhances elution of lead from leaded brass alloys. Phase I involved leaded-brass 1/4 in. elbows pre-conditioned in DI water and soaked in static solutions containing various combinations of CL, CA, FSA, NaF, and ammonium fluosilicate. In Phase II 20 leaded-

The Dental Health of primary school children living in fluoridated, pre-fluoridated and non-fluoridated communities in New South Wales, Australia.

BACKGROUND: The Local Government Area of Gosford implemented a water fluoridation scheme in 2008. Therefore the opportunity was taken to record the dental health of primary school children aged 5-7 years prior to the fluoridation and compare the results with other communities in NSW with different access to fluoridated water. The aim was to compare the oral health of New South Wales (Australia)s 5-7 year olds living in fluoridated, and non- fluoridated communities. One of the areas was due to implement water fluoridation and is termed the pre-fluoridation site. METHODS: Pupils in the first ye…

The effects of fluoride on bone.

Fluoride has often been used as a treatment for osteoporosis, a metabolic bone disease of considerable importance in the elderly population. The techniques currently used to monitor a patient's response to fluoride are outlined. New findings concerning (1) a mechanism for interaction of fluoride with osteoblasts (via mitogenic signals or growth factors); (2) toxicity and carcinogenesis; (3) recent clinical trial data; and (4) the importance of dosage, administration regimens, and side effects in an effective fluoride treatment protocol are reviewed. Some recent clinical data challenge the effi

Fluoride therapy for otosclerosis.

From the extensive morphological studies performed, otosclerosis appears to be ubiquitous, and in many instances subclinical. Despite reports of the efficacy of fluoride for this condition, at present its use should be regarded as experimental.

Fluoride, teeth and bone.

Fluoride therapy has been credited with remarkable success in reducing the incidence of tooth decay. Medium to high doses of fluoride have been used in the treatment of osteoporosis. The precise mode of action of fluoride on teeth and bone has yet to be elucidated. It is often assumed that, except in rare circumstances, plasma and extracellular fluid levels of ionic fluoride will not reach concentrations capable of interfering with the normal functioning of human cells. However, fluoride accumulates in skeletal tissues and may be concentrated in the surface layers of the lacunae and canalicula
