Details are given of a semi-synthetic low-magnesium diet that provides adequate short-term nutrition. The diet is made up of proprietary foodstuffs and is suitable for short-term magnesium deprivation studies in man. After five days on the diet four subjects demonstrated a marked fall in urinary magnesium excretion.

We report a 34-month-old girl with stage IV neuroblastoma who developed hives when parenteral nutrition (PN) containing amino acids, dextrose, electrolytes, minerals, vitamins, and trace elements was infused. Administration of diphenhydramine resulted in disappearance of the rash. Infusion of the PN solution without intravenous fat emulsion produced a similar rash with itching. The pediatric multiple vitamin (PMV) preparation was removed from the PN formula and the formula was infused without incident. The patient was maintained on PN and an oral vitamin supplement with no further complaints.

BACKGROUND: Dysphagia can lead to aspiration of oral feeds, thus causing pneumonia. Dysphagia is diagnosed by assessing the ability to swallow barium test feeds (BTF) of different viscosities. Eighty malnourished patients with neoplasms, enteric fistulae, multiorgan trauma and septic complications administered food by means of enteral feeding (EF).
