Associations of ultra-processed food and drink products with asthma and wheezing among Brazilian adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Although both consumptions of ultra-processed products and asthma are common during adolescence, the epidemiological evidence in regarding their association is unclear. We investigated the associations of ultra-processed products consumption with asthma and wheezing in a representative sample of Brazilian adolescents. METHODS: We used data from a representative sample of 109 104 Brazilian adolescents enrolled in the National Survey of School Health, 2012. The consumption of ultra-processed products was based on the weekly consumption (0-2, 3-4, ≥5 d/wk) of sweet biscuits, salty bi

Integrating Policies that Enable Minimally Processed Foods with Policies that Restrict Ultra-Processed Foods for Obesity and Noncommunicable Disease Prevention.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Historically, many food policies for obesity and noncommunicable disease prevention focus on reducing the demand for ultra-processed foods (UPFs). This narrative review examines why integrating policies that enable minimally processed foods (MPFs) with UPF restriction is critical for improving diets and health. RECENT FINDINGS: Despite progress from UPF-restrictive policies, MPF-related barriers like limited availability and accessibility, inadequate food preparation infrastructure, and limited time and cooking skills continue to undermine dietary quality. MPF-enabling meas

Characterization of nonpathogenic Listeria species isolated from food and food processing environment.

A total of 127 Listeria isolates from food and food processing environments, including 75 L. innocua, 49 L. welshimeri, 2 L. seeligeri and 1L. grayi were tested for susceptibility to eight antimicrobials, benzalkonium chloride (BC), cadmium and arsenic. The isolates were also screened for the presence of extrachromosomal genetic elements - plasmids, and their restriction pattern types were determined. All strains were susceptible to ampicillin, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, gentamicin, rifampicin, trimethoprim and vancomycin. Two of the L. innocua isolates showed resistance to tetracycline and

Increasing Minimally Processed Food Intake in Depression via Commercial Meal Delivery: Qualitative Accounts of Participant Experiences.

Background/Objectives: Several randomized controlled trials have found that dietary interventions promoting self-guided shifts away from ultra-processed foods (UPFs) and toward minimally processed, nutrient-dense foods may alleviate depressive symptoms. However, translating these interventions into scalable and sustainable real-world approaches remains a key challenge. Adopting a minimally processed dietary pattern requires sustained effort (e.g., meal planning, shopping, and preparation) within environments where UPFs are pervasive and convenient. These demands may be especially burdensome fo

Ultra-Processed Food Consumption and Cancer Risk: An Umbrella Review of Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses.

Evidence on the association between ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption and cancer risk is inconsistent, and systematic reviews (SRs) and meta-analyses (MAs) are fragmented across different cancer types and study populations. A comprehensive synthesis is needed to evaluate the robustness of the evidence. We therefore conducted an umbrella review (UR) of SRs and MAs to synthesize the available evidence on the association between UPF consumption and the risk of various cancers. PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library were systematically searched from inception to January 15, 2026

Ultra-processed food consumption is linked to quality of life and mental distress among university students.

BACKGROUND: Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are industrial formulations that typically contain little or no whole foods and are often high in added sugars, unhealthy fats, and sodium. Research indicates that higher intake of UPFs correlates with lower overall diet quality, which can exacerbate mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. This study aimed to assess the associations between UPF consumption with health-related quality of life, and mental distress in university students. METHOD: This cross-sectional study consisted of 595 students resident in Samsun/Türkiye. The data were co

Food hydrocolloids κ-carrageenan and xanthan gum in processed red meat modify gut health in rats.

The food hydrocolloids κ-carrageenan and xanthan gum, used in processed foods including meat products, have unclear effects on gut health. This study investigated the effects of incorporating 1 % κ-carrageenan or xanthan gum into pork on protein digestibility, gut microbiota, oxidative stress, and gene expression using both in vitro gastrointestinal digestion/fermentation and an in vivo rodent model. In vitro, xanthan gum reduced protein digestibility (-11 %) in the simulated small intestine, thus elevating protein fermentation metabolites (up to 4-fold), but this was not observed in vivo. Con

Intimidation against advocates and researchers in the tobacco, alcohol and ultra-processed food spaces: a review.

Unhealthy commodity industries (UCIs) engage in corporate political activity, using diverse practices, including intimidatory tactics, to thwart, delay and dilute regulations that threaten their businesses. While examples of such intimidation exist across multiple sectors, no attempt has been made to synthesize these. Furthermore, much of the literature focuses on intimidation of policy-makers. Less is known about the types of intimidation experienced by advocates and researchers and their responses to this intimidation. This scoping review explores the literature across the tobacco, alcohol a

Are we overlooking ultra-processed foods in preeclampsia?

Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are a hallmark of unhealthy dietary patterns and have been linked to chronic low-grade inflammation, insulin resistance, and obesity - key risk factors for preeclampsia (PE). Growing epidemiological evidence associates UPF-rich dietary patterns with increased risk of hypertensive disorders of hypertension (HDP), including PE. UPFs may promote PE pathophysiology through inflammation, gut microbiota dysbiosis, immune dysregulation, oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction, and angiogenic imbalance. In this narrative review we synthesize the epidemiological and mecha

Protein digestion and absorption: the influence of food processing.

The rates of dietary protein digestion and absorption can be significantly increased or decreased by food processing treatments such as heating, gelling and enzymatic hydrolysis, with subsequent metabolic impacts, e.g. on muscle synthesis and glucose homeostasis. This review examines in vivo evidence that industrial and domestic food processing modify the kinetics of amino acid release and absorption following a protein-rich meal. It focuses on studies that used compositionally-matched test meals processed in different ways.Food processing at extremely high temperature at alkaline pH and/or in
